Summary: Bad
Review: I thought that this movie was going to be good, and a friend of mine and I sat down to watch it. We were very disappointed and to this day still joke about how horrible it was. The plot was slow and not set up well, a majority of the time is spent on the set-up not on the actual guts of the movie. The scene that is depicted on the front only takes up a small portion at the end. As one of the other reviewers said, watch Menace to Society instead.

Summary: A Gansters Life
Review: "Dead Presidents" is a very fun and quiet look at the common predicaments that are faced by the typical ganster. It is a jumpy look at plausible dangers that always are faced by law breakers of all urban communities. It does a good job to show the differences of some "playaz", how they don't wish to be doing what they are doing. Oh well, it is a little bit unexplained, it being the plot, but there are a lot of good action scenes and sequences that brings back good memories of my past life.

Summary: EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT!!
Review: Dead Presidents is an excellent movie! Larenz Tate was great in every aspect! From the beginning to end this movie kept you interested in the lives of each character. I believe this was a good depiction of what young men had to deal with back in the 1960's! Chris Tucker was hilarious as usual, and Larenz was awesome!

Summary: DON'T BELIEVE THE BAD HYPE
Review: Dead Presidents is a cool movie, I don't what the other reviewers were watching. It has a compelling story, great actors, and it's filmed very artistically. Every actor in this film did a great job bringing their characters to life. This film keeps you entertained, there is not one dull moment. After following the story, you want to see them pull off the heist and it's gripping to the very end, I won't spoil the ending..........

Summary: Really disappointing.
Review: I gave an extra star for Keith David's performance, which was as good as ever. Only he could play that type of character: a crippled-but-tough, nice-but-menacing father figure.

The other charcters, though, were horrible. There was nothing remarkable about any of the other performances. They were all shallow, stereotypical, and pointless.

The Vietnam segment was ludicrous. I don't have a to see a preacher's son rip the head off of a dead Vietnamese soldier to know that what my dad (who actually was a U.S. Marine in Vietnam fom '65 to '66, and again in 1968) went through was hell.

The very notion of a pot-head like Chris Tucker's character being a member of a Recon team is absurd. Whether it's Battalion or Force Recon, you have to be one of the smartest, most capable Marines out there to get in. It was an insult what they showed in the movie.

At the end, we were supposed to feel sorry for Tate's character and agree with him about what he did for his country.

I personally ended up siding with the Judge (Martin Sheen). He had some very good points, except for Vietnam not being a "real war."

Almost all of the violence was overdone and gory just for the sake of being gory.

I would recommend against either renting or buying this movie. Or if you do, get it for Keith David's performance alone.

Summary: Flawed But Admirable Effort From The Hughes Brothers!
Review: This film has all the elements to become a fascinating melodrama with interesting characters. But instead shifts wildly into different directions; black ghetto melodrama, Vietnam experiences and heist flick, in that order. The characters are also one-dimensional and unlikable. Main faults are jarring shifts in tone and severe miscasting in vital roles, primarily the 'Vietnam cast' and Chris Tucker is wrong for the role, he can't play serious and his comic touch sometimes lowers the dramatic impact. On the other hand, Larenz Tate delivers a credible performance and the best in the whole movie. Entertaining, controversial and ultimately makes its' point, but could of been much better. Extras: Spot Martin Sheen in a cameo. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film a 6!

Summary: Gangster/War/Hiest Film with the volume turned up to Eleven
Review: Dead Presidents is a bizzare amalgamation of three different movies. One part Goodfellas when you consider Anthony(Larenze Tate) as the young blood joining the local boss Kirby's racket, running numbers for him and gaining his respect. Another part The Deer Hunter, where young friends go to war and comeback with emtional and physical scars. In the last half hour the movie resembles Micheal Mann's Heat with an exciting no hold barred bloody heist. Unfortunatly it is never as good as any of these three (all Five star stuff) but it does have an in your face violent intensity that its impossible to not get caught up in it. The first and last quarters of this film work best. As the film starts Anthony a wide eyed young man is running numbers for the local gang man Kirby. He refuses to go to college like his brother and considers joining the marines, he falls in love with a girl called Wanita, and hangs around with his friends. One of them is Chris Tucker whose only ambition in life is to become a pimp. At this juncture the film is a slice of life New York tale and it works wonderfully. Once they get to Vietnam the film unneccesarily turns into a gorefest and wallows in stylish excces. Back home things get ugly as Anthony now poor, has to fight off a local hood interested in Wanita. The film throws around all sorts of ideas, the veteran ignored by his country, the rise of socialism in America, drug addiction, alcoholism and we're not caught up in any of it because its all an excuse to set up stylish scenes that are burrowed from other movies. The entire mid-section of the film is a complete fake, with non of the realism that populate Spike Lee's or Martin Scorceses's films. Towards the end however the excitement of the hiest pulls us back into the movie with sheer adrenaline. Our attraction to the heist represents the appeal of this film which is the action, violence, style(the gangs painted faces look great) and a flood of half baked political commentary.

Summary: Dead Presidents is why I watch movies!
Review: I really don't know what is wrong with some people. If you have no care for art, real life drama, superb acting, great photography, editing and filmmaking sure, go see Bill & Ted, but this movie is one of my life time favorites.
