Review: Charles Bronson is the archetypal loner/depression-era knight, riding into town on that fraight-train named poverty. And this guy can fight! Bronson's face is like an aged fine -wine...enough creases to convince you that he's "past it."
Strother Matin is absolutely perfect as Poe...opium reveller incarnate. I am moved by this film...its tone, music,and characterization makes it a wonderful event. See it!

Summary: Charles Bronson's best
Review: Finally released on a quality medium, Charles Bronson's best movie is a delight. His quiet, understated aproach to a "tough guy" role is a refreshing change from the overwrought blowhards we see too often today. James Coburn plays the sleazy promoter with style, and great supporting roles are presented by Jill Ireland and Strother Martin. Robert Tessier is one mean dude.The anamorphic transfer is tremendous. A minor classic.

Review: For anyone who loves Coburn/Bronson, great direction, stylistic cinematography or period films, this is it. I was oh-so impressed with how great this movie looks in 2.35 widescreen. Great transfer and a great price!! The ending was a bit anti-climatic, but this disc is definately staying in the collection. They don't make 'em like James Coburn or Charles Bronson anymore.......

Summary: One of Bronson's best
Review: Hard Times (known as 'The Streetfighter' here in Australia) is Bronson's best movie alongside Death Wish. The film is set in the 1930's during the depression, and its recreation of this period is outstanding. This is not a movie for hard-core action/fighting fans. Like 'The Karate Kid' and 'Rocky', Hard Times has a real story and interesting characters. Bronson's character, Chaney, is humble, quiet, a bit of a loner - this contrasts nicely with James Coburn's portrayal of Speed, a compulsive gambler who sets up fights for Bronson. Strother Martin and Jill Ireland (Bronson's real-life wife until her death some years ago) are also great in their supporting roles. Nice to see an old forgotten classic like Hard Times released on DVD.

Summary: Hill's Best Film
Review: Hard Times is hands down Walter Hill's best film. Some of you may disagree, favoring Southern Comfort, Long Riders, or The Warriors or maybe even 48 Hours, but in the end all those films have certain elements that hold them back. Hard Times, on the other hand is, as another writer has put it, a great "Mid-Seventies movie." Bronson and the rest of the cast are perfect. The story is pared down and action packed. The characters are inetersting and the story has a nice ring to it. The actors are probably what makes the film. You just don't have the caliber of Bronson, Coburn and Martin these days. These days Hill just makes the same thing over and over, seemingly trying to recapture his past glory, but none of his films is as successful as Hard Times. And maybe best of all, no bus chases.

Summary: Bronson's best film, by far
Review: I am not necessarily a big fan of Charles Bronson, but in "Hard Times" he excels. Few films catch the dark mood of the Great Depression as well as this film. It sets its mood subtly, unlike pictures like "The Journey of Natty Gann," and "The Grapes of Wrath" --both otherwise excellent films-- which telegraph both the era and their messages. The '20's and 30's string band music in the background is superbly fitted to the times.

Summary: GREAT film but AWFUL video
Review: I love this movie. The dialogue is poetry -- it contains some of the best lines I've ever heard in a movie. (And yes, I am talking about a Charles Bronson movie!) However, I urge you to avoid the video and wait to catch it on commercial TV. Ordinarily, I'd never ever say that, but this video is unique. It isn't letterboxed, but it isn't pan-and-scan, either. It's as if the camera just sits in the center of a wide scene and the actors come and go in and out of sight. Terribly frustrating. I even ended up giving my copy away. I'd go so far as to call this a truly great movie, but you're missing out if you let the video be your first exposure to it.

Review: I was lucky enough to see this movie one night ten years ago and i have never seen a better fight movie or movie ever for that matter,and charles bronson was brilliant as chainy in a movie i have never ever forgot and have searched for these long years and would recommend it to any one who feels in a fighting mood,so enjoy it,as i have finally found it thanks to the internett and will order it today,(The BEST).

Summary: A solid 3 star film with a lot of flavor.
Review: I've seen this film several times; it's a very good film, thanks to some very good characterizations by James Coburn and Strother Martin. A street version of Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name", really, and Bronson does it well. The film also has a nice feel for time and locales.
