Summary: A Great Edition To Your DVD Collection
Review: THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS - Deluxe 4 DVD Collectors Set is a great addition to the film collector who like the information on the behind the scenes of making a movie. The Four DVD set has over 20 hours of screen information to watch - this includes - the three commentaries, which are excellent. The commentaries include the director and producer, the cast and the special effects people - all very enlightening and especially entertaining when listening to the cast version.

My review of the movie itself can be read on the regular DVD release. So for story and contact of the film itself - see that review. Here, I will focus on the extra's this one has.

The art and graphics; there are literally thousands of images on these DVD's. From the original drawings from the various novel artists to pre conception, pre production, design and development as well as all the art departments including costume, make-up, set and visual design departments.

The concept art and design; there are documentaries on the process of one word in Tolkeins books being take from interpreting, design, construction and filming. Very interesting and detailed information contained on these DVD's.

Behind the scenes documentaries; each of these details every aspect of the films production. From scouting locations, to finding props, doing forced perspectives, dueling, sword play, special effects, stunts, visual effects, computer generation and even the casting process. An extremely well done production on these DVD's.

The quality of the DVD and DVD Rom; The DVD itself is very well put together. The guiding menus are graphic and detailed and there are even introductions and explanations on how to use the DVD menus. This is a great collection to anyone who is a filmmaker or aspires to be one. Also - if you are just into the process of film making, this is definitely an educational tool. (12-10-02)

Summary: A Far Superior Edition of an already Superior movie
Review: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings Special Extended Edition is an excellent retelling of the original version. What director Peter Jackson has done is magnificant. Instead of just setting deleted scenes aside to be viewed separately, he has inserted them into the film. And instead of just inserting them, he has rearranged scenes so that the movie flows.
The result is a completely new movie that makes you plunge into the world of Middle Earth. Some of the new scenes are very insightful, like the "Concerning Hobbits" prologue, the departure of the Wood-elves to the Grey Havens, the gifts of Galadriel, and the memorial of Aragorn's mother.
Complimenting the newly added scenes are extentions of already existing scenes. This is a beautiful movie and the plot deepens in this special edition. Though there is no Tom Bombadil or songs of Tolkien, it is still a very enjoyable, emotional experience.
Once you watch this edition, you will never be able to watch the original again. You'll be stuck to this one. I highly recommend it!!!

Summary: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Review: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" is a brilliant movie by director Peter Jackson! The special effects, cinematography, and music (score) were all fantastic! This movie is filled with action, adventure, drama, a little romance, fantasy, and fun. Even though this movie did not perfectly follow the author J.R.R. Tolkiens "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy book, which I have read, that does not mean that this is a bad movie. I, for one, can actually understand why Peter Jackson, and his crew, cut, added, and changed some parts to it. The actors and actresses did a wonderful job on acting in this movie. They also did a wonderful job on acting like the characters from the book. There are a lot of fantasy characters brought to life, from the book, on this movie such as: the ring-wraiths, the watcher in the water, many orcs, a cave troll, the balrog demon, elves, dwarves, wizards, and hobbits. Peter Jackson chose to direct this movie in New Zealand, which was the perfect country to direct "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy movies. This movie is the winner of four Oscars (Academy Awards)! Congratulations to director Peter Jackson and his crew! I highly recommend you buy "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" movie on VHS or DVD because it is a perfect five star and two thumbs up true t

Summary: Great Movie!
Review: The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the rings is the best movie I have ever seen. Hands down.

Summary: Absolutely Astonishing!
Review: The Lord Of The Rings; the book series thought to be un-makeable in the film industry, now tried and done. And it came out perfect. This first installment, The Fellowship of the Ring, starts the series of with a BANG!

Frodo Baggins of the shire is left with his uncle Bilbo's magical Ring of Power, which has a terrible force beyond Frodo's wildest dreams. Gandalf the Grey informs Frodo of this, and tells him that Sauron, the Dark Lord is seeking out his old ring, and if he got hold of it, middle earth would be doomed.

Frodo embarks upon an amazing quest, fighting the immortal Nazgul, disgustingly evil orcs and goblins, powerful cave trolls, ferocious Uruk-Hai, and many more evils! He meets many friends, and looses some, and the cliffhanger at the end of the movie leaves you squirming for more. The next installment, The Two Towers, was also excellent, and this special DVD comes with a preview for it.

The DVD also come with over a half hour of bonus footage, some new scenes, some extended, which all should not have been left out on the first place. The new scenes help explain points of the movie, and all of the good battle scenes (such as Moria and Amon Hem) have been extended. The movie ends up being about three and a half hours long, and the whole thing is excellent. Since the movie is so long, it takes up two disks.

There are two more disks in the Platinum extended DVD, which have hours of behind the scenes footage, commentary, the making of the cast, scenes, and special effects, and hundreds of guideline pictures they used to help create this masterpiece.

Look out for the extended Two Towers DVD a while after the movie comes out; I'm sure it will be just as good. I can't wait for The Return of The King...

Summary: The best movie created!!
Review: The Lordo of the rings, the Fellowship of the Ring has captivated me. I have read the books, and the movie was a treat, a wonderful work of genius. The people who made it are very talented and dedicated people, i believe, because without such people, the movie could not have been what it was, a praise-deserving movie. The music especially was kewl. Howard Shore is a great composer! I love this movie, and i'm sure everyone else does too!!!!! All love Lord of the Rings!

P.S. Elijah Wood is the HOTTEST movie star around!!!

Summary: Very Magnificent Movie
Review: The LOTR is the most magnificent movie I ever saw in my entire life. It was lavishly set in the lush landscape of New Zealand. The actors and actresses in the movie played their roles to the hilt. I can't wait for the movie to be out on video.

My all-around favorite character is Aragorn played by an extraordinarily gifted actor Viggo Mortensen. At first, Aragorn refuses to assume kingship over Gondor because of Isildur's bane, the one ring which his ancestor hoped to aid his kingdom turned out to be a curse. As a result, Isildur and three of his four sons were killed by orcs. The line of kings were broken as a result and that later monarchs were either murdered by orcs, Aragorn's father was one of them.

In the meantime, Bilbo Baggins, Frodo's uncle, went on a series of trips with the Dwarves to retrieve treasure for them. He stumbled upon a ring, the one ring which betrayed Isildur and abandoned Gollum/Smeagol from his very hand. He picked it up, not knowing that it gives terrible power.

Summary: More character development
Review: The major plus to the extended material is the addition mostly of 30 minutes of dialogue. You don't get more special effects (they're good enough already!), you get instead more character development, which really rounds out the film and definitely makes it superior to its predecessor. My one gripe, as a nitpicky fan whose read the series multiple times is why Galadriel doesn't give Sam the box with the blessed earth and mallorn seed. He only gets a rope, which in the book he simply admires and takes from the boat. Hopefully this does not portend a premature ending to the trilogy . . .

Summary: LOTR is to Film what Shakespeare is to Literature!
Review: The makers of Lord of the Rings invested incredible time, energy and talent in bringing Fellowship of the Ring to life. Their results would have proven intensely satisfying to Tolkein himself, author of Lord of the Rings.

Faithfully putting amazing effort into creating the world of Middle Earth, the attention to detail is evident in every frame of the film. Director Peter Jackson demanded the absolute best from every artist involved in the production. Sets for Hobbiton, Bag End and Rivendell were astounding efforts, made full sized and matching the description given by Tolkein with unrelenting exactitude.

The actors were perfectly suited to the roles they portrayed, particularly the characters of Gandalph the Wizard, Frodo Baggins, Samwise and Aragorn. Liv Tyler gives an amazing performance as Arwen. The Black Riders (Nazgul) were rendered with terrifying accuracy.

This production is to film what Shakespeare is to literature. While a bit longish, there is never wasted time or superfluous shots. The entire film is wholly satisfying to Tolkein fans who loved the books and were sorely disappointed by past efforts to dramatize Lord of the Rings.

I am amazed that there are sundry individuals who gave a bad review to this film. This speaks more to the character of the reviewer than the quality of the film itself, or perhaps failed to grasp the depth of Tolkein's writing. Do not allow yourself to be dissauded from seeing, and owning, this film by reviews penned by those who lack appreciation for the artistic merit and monumental effort of the filmmakers of LOTR. Read the books, see the film, and I am certain you will see how wonderfully the movie captures the spirit Tolkein intended.

There is no film of recent vintage that I would recommend more highly than Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring. Certainly no film of recent vintage has put forth more effort, more artistic faithfulness, nor inspired creative talent than the makers of this film. Working more than a year before production actually started, they transformed the New Zealand countryside into Hobbiton. They did so with amazing purity and faithfulness to Tolkein's work.

This film is excellent beyond my ability to praise appropriately. The best way to appreciate the film is to read Tolkein, then see the film yourself. You will discover, as I did, that the images Tolkein inspires in your mind have come to life in Lord of the Rings!

Summary: The Fellowship Falls Short
Review: The making of this film is terrific. Since I had read the Triology many, many years ago I was looking forward for some time for this DVD issue. All through the viewing I loved it's attention to detail. The sound was grand, but often the musical score overshadowed the dialoge. In many cases it was so loud the speech could not be heard at all! And then finally 'the End'!! What a disappointment; we're left hanging to await another release (which I now learn is not until November 2002). If I had known this I would not have bought this release! Just a ploy to get more money out of the customer and into the producers pockets!
