Summary: Great film
Review: One of the finest stories of courage and sacrifice in wartime ever filmed, it is up there on my list of favorites right beside The Triumph and the Glory and The Bridges of Toko-Ri.

Summary: Poor Adaptation, Great Movie
Review: Other than the title, the setting, and the names of some characters, this movie really doesn't have that much in common with Edward L. Beach's novel. That's really too bad, because a proper filming of the novel might have made for an even better movie. Despite that, this film rightly ranks as one of the best submarine films ever. The screen writers came up with their own story, very loosely based on some plot lines from the novel, and then added a lot of dramatic action for Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.

The supporting cast is great. Don Rickles does a nice job as the quartermaster, and Jack Warden is his usual reliable self as Gable's yeoman. As usual in these old films, a fair amount of stock footage is employed, and the "Japanese" destroyers are obviously really American ships, but the sets are as authentic as the producers could make them. The Navy was scrapping a lot of older subs in the late 1950's and the studio got their hands on a lot of real equipment and used it for set dressing.

Good movies are mostly about people. Machines and weapons are really background. It's how the people interact that makes a film truly great. You get that here. Even with most of Beach's story tossed out, Run Silent, Run Deep is still a classic movie and stands up very nicely on its own.

Summary: Excellent submarine movie
Review: Run Silent, Run Deep is an excellent WWII submarine adventure with an excellent cast. It tells the story of a submarine who has received a new captain in place of one of their own officers. The new captain, Captain PJ Richardson, wants revenge on the Japanese destroyer who sunk his previous sub. The man he took the position away from, First Officer Bledsoe, instantly takes a dislike to him which causes obvious problems. The movie follows the efforts of the two men to counter each other as one seeks revenge and the other tries to save the lives of the crew.

Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster are both excellent as the battling officers aboard the sub. The movie boasts an excellent supporting cast that includes Jack Warden, Brad Dexter, Nick Cravat, and Don Rickles, all who do very good jobs with their roles. However, Gable, in a later role, and Lancaster steal many of the scenes they are in together. The DVD is well worth it with a booklet included and also widescreen and full screen options for viewing. This is a great movie for fans of WWII action flicks! It is often obvious how this movie influenced later submarine movies in the genre. Go and check out this movie!

Summary: Very Little Waste In This Film
Review: RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP is one of the best submarine movies I have ever seen. There is very little waste in this film and plenty of action. Lancaster and Gable are superb as usual. Jack Warden is always competent and it is a treat to see Don Rickles in a serious role. Eddie Foy III plays the part of one of the members of the sub's crew.

Robert Wise was also the director of WEST SIDE STORY and THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN.

Summary: A MUST FOR WWII BUFFS
Review: Technically authentic down to jargon and tactics, all of the movie's shots are framed so that the real mechanical, working guts of the Gato Class sub can be seen in action. And none of the usual Hollywood bravado. The crewman sweat bullets, as they are driven against their will by their own Captain Ahab to seek revenge, to go where orders forbid them, to take on a target that should not be taken on. That target can move as fast as their torpedoes can run and can be hit only by drawing it into a dicey, down the throat shot to the bow. A well crafted, well paced, and tense film with great performances by Gable, Lancaster, and lots of well known character actors. Based on a novel by someone who served.

Summary: This movie is a great sub classic
Review: The best part about this movie, was when they finally got the Jap destroyer and sank it with a bow shot. This movie keeps you in suspence and never lets you get away. It keeps you thinking that they may never get this destroyer, but at the end they do...

Summary: Disappointment Runs Deep
Review: The book is way better than the movie. Don't waste your time on this one.

Summary: Feel the War Under the Sea
Review: The movie makes you feel the tightness and heat of being in a small area as you carry the war to the enemy. Lancaster makes you feel what it is like to be passed over for command and have to work for the man who has the job you wanted. Work in a small area not much bigger than some trucks driving our highways today.
Clark Gable does an excellent job of showing how to be a commander to a group of people who do not want him, but have to obey. This movie should be shown to many of our young people today to show how sometimes you have to discipline yourself to obey others even though you might not want to have them as a leader.
The only weakness ,in my estimation, was the ending. I thought it was too pat a way to wrap up the ending. Except for the ending I would have given it 5 stars.
A great movie classic

Summary: the root of Das boot
Review: This film started the saga of das boot, crisom tide and other great submarine movies. The cast "lancaster, Gable" is so powerfull.. they make the movie. I must imagine when it first came out in those days... it must have create such a tention in the theater... it`s still very present in today's movie technic.
Another great 2hr of entertainment
