Summary: True Story of an Epic Battle - One of my favorite war movies
Review: True story of the failed Allied invasion of Holland in Sept. 1944, the brainchild of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. This film does a great job of bringing together events on a grand scale -- to avoid confusion, it helps to read the book first. Historically accurate, with a wealth of great stars that do not detract from the story itself, as often happens, this film tells the story of the largest airborne invasion -- and the costliest single battle -- the Allies engaged in during the war on the Western Front. Three Allied airborne divisions, 30,000 men, are dropped along a 60-mile corrridor to seize key bridges linking a narrow highway through Holland that leads straight over the Rhine river into Germany's industrial heartland, the Ruhr.

The plan is to capitalize on recent sweeping Allied victories in France and Belgium, rush armored forces North across the Rhine, and end the war by Christmas 1944. But British intelligence ignores warnings from the Dutch underground that the last key bridge at Arnhem, a town on the Rhine 64 miles behind enemy lines, has recently become a rest area for the crack 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions. Tragedy ensues when the veteran British 1st Airborne Division, dropped over Arnhem deep in enemy territory and instructed to hold for two days, is mauled in a valiant fight against elite SS armored forces lasting over a week, as British tanks of XXX Corps fight desperately to reach them. The American 101st and 82nd Airborne forces took heavy casualties also in their fights to seize the bridges at Eindhoven and Nijmegen. The film details Allied overconfidence about the state of the German war machine in late summer 1944, the struggle to cope with unexpected enemy strength once the battle begins, and the race against time to reach the British at Arnhem. The climactic scene is perhaps the bloody final drive by the U.S. 82nd Airborne to seize Nijmegen bridge, the last natural obstacle to reaching Arnhem. A truly great war film and an educational study of war that flopped at the box office, partly because it was about a major Allied defeat.

Review: WHILE THIS IS A VERY GOOD MOVIE. THE TRANSFER IS VERY POOR , WITH A TON OF ARTIFACTS. LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE WATCHING IT AT A RUN DOWN THEATRE WITH A 30 YEAR OLD SCREEN. STICK WITH THE VHS VERSION. ALL STAR CAST- GOOD ACTING

Summary: moving, star-studded, superb acting, gripping music.
Review: This cinema piece is by far a favorite of mine. I have seen every notable war film and this ranks as one of the best. In all actuality, I enjoyed it more than my old favorite, The Bridge Over the River Kwai. Upon initially seeing this film, i was surprised at the unusual concentration of famous actors. Names such as Connery, Redford, Cane, and let's not forget Hopkins, to name a few. In my experience, an unfortunate trend in movie making is the absense of good plot/story line when numerous famous faces are involved. The success of the picture is sometimes made to rely on their presense. Not in this case, however. Everything seems to fit in quite nicely. I believe this movie to be one of the last "greats" in terms of traditional movie production; not to shadow more modern success like Platoon, but well, things just won't be like they used to let's say.

Review: This was one of the best movies about WWII. It is a little "wordy" at times but the all-star cast makes up for it. Well worth your time.

Summary: Great movie and sound, ok picture
Review: After seeing this movie over and over on commercial TV with its pan and scan and cut out sceens, the DVD version is a wonderful treat. The movie reminds me of Patton in that there is an adequate amount of war action but the real movie is about the strategy used by the leaders of both sides.

My only complaint is about the video transfer. The master used to create the DVD contained specks throughout the film. I have been spoiled by DVDs of recent movies but I really wish that the studio either obtained a better master, or did some clean up on the vudeo before transfering to DVD.
