Summary: An Outstanding Film!
Review: The most impressive aspect of this film was Mr. Spielberg's attention to detail and penchant for realism. The unabashed slaughter of both Allied and Axis troops throughout the film was horrendous, really showing everyone the evils of war and the price that Allied soldiers paid to rid Europe of Hitler's oppression. The sound quality on this DTS DVD is incredible. I had to turn down the gain on my subwoofer to keep the dishes from rattling! I would like to see Mr Spielberg use his filmmaking savvy to make a similar movie about the U.S. Marines in the WWII Pacific Theater, perhaps the battle for Iwo Jima.

Summary: Technically unacceptable
Review: This is a quality movie. Unfortunately, the transfer of the film to DVD is lacking in quality control checks. The first DVD I bought had a video glitch in Chapter 12 and multiple audio problems in Chapters 19 and 20. It was returned and the 2nd disc had the same video "freeze" glitch in Chapter 12 at about the 9 minute 35 second mark. This is unacceptable for DVD quality. I have not had problems with other DVDs.

Summary: Visually and emotionally stunning
Review: Saving Private Ryan is a haunting and disturbing look at the brutality of warfare. It is probably the closest we as viewers will get to the realities of the battlefield. What a masterpiece.

Summary: A tribute to courage
Review: One of the finest stories of courage and sacrifice in wartime ever filmed, it is up there on my list of favorites right beside The Triumph and the Glory and The Bridges of Toko-Ri. Brilliant. Unforgettable. A must see!

Summary: GREAT MOVIE, no matter who you are.
Review: I don't really care if the Germans are insulted by this film. America didn't start the war, they only won it. Enough said. This is a magnificent movie that shows the horror of war like no other movie ever has. The only problem with it is, it has a glaring fault. The flashback scene that is portrayed at the beginning of the film doesn't make sense as the person thinking back, wasn't involved in more than half of the incidents that he remembers.

Summary: All liberals should have to watch this movie 100 times
Review: Excellent film about the hardship of being forced to fight for your life againest real enemy. Gritting scarey, sad, about the human experience under the most stressful conditions possible. The real experience of lossing a friend or friends in combat no bs.

Summary: Excellent movie, but having problems with DTS sound?
Review: Anyone else experiencing problems with the DTS soundtrack? Other DTS titles I have play fine, This one doesn't even register with the decoder as a DTS audio source. Any help would be appreciated.

Summary: The sound effect on DVD is not as good as that on VHS.
Review: I rented a VHS version of the movie from Rogers Video and I liked the movie. So I went to Future Shop and bought a DVD version of the movie. I was very disappointed because the sound effect on the DVD is much worse than that on the VHS I rented. From now on I will not believe that DVD is better than VHS. I think it all depends on who made the dvd/tape.

Summary: Great special effects.
Review: The battle scenes are technically well done, and the plot line is sort of believable. It does come off as a Hollywood effort, with the German POW subplot.

Tom Hanks does a good job, but there's a scene where Ted Danson makes a cameo, and to imagine those two as combat soldiers is over the top.

Somehow it seems like the characters should have come across as more tired, dirty and scared than they did.

In the bonus cassette that came with main feature, Hanks and others talks reverently about patriotism and sacrifice and answering the call. Too bad their buddy Bill grew up to set such a contrasting example.
