Summary: entertaining, yet inaccurate portraiyal of submarine drama
Review: It's a Hollywood film -- what else can you say? Denzel Washington was excellant as always, and Gene Hackman gave a strong performance as a gung-ho submarine commander. I admire both actors. Being ex-enlisted myself, I laugh every time I see the scene in which an officer is shouting at an enlistedman to "get down and give me 50!" That sort of stuff was left behind in boot camp. Just remember that this movie was brought to you by the same guy who made Armageddon. The point I'm trying to make is that both films, while very entertaining, have the same believability factor-- and it's very low! You'll enjoy this movie if you remove your thinking cap, and you are not turned off by a lot of foul language (the only thing in this film that is accurately depicted about submarine life).

Summary: Great soundtrack, insult to submarine veterans everywhere.
Review: I can understand the inaccuracies on the technical side, and the dramatised story. It just wouldn't appeal to the general public if it were accurate. But the portrayal of the enlisted as being a bunch of incompetent children is an insult to the men and women who have served this great country. Enjoy the story line, but know that this movie is FAR from reality.

Review: This movie was one of my favorites. It is full of suspense if you like those kind of movies, it really makes you wonder what will happen next. Though the end is predictable, it does not affect the quality of the movie.

Summary: it's hollywood!
Review: it's certainly not a likely scenario, and perhaps insulting to naval officers & enlisted--but only if you think that this is a realistic portrayal of life on a nuclear sub! i am sure the naval chain of command is based upon far saner and honorable principles than those portrayed in this film--but once you buy the premise that this is a situation where those principles have broken down (for whatever reason), it's a great piece of entertainment. certainly better than "red october", though of course not as good as several earlier examples of the genre (for me, nothing tops "das boot"!) i didn't know it was a novel--one i'm sure i'll never read. in the end, it's not at all a movie about the navy. it's a study in the psychology of power. could've been made as a business drama, or a street gang flick (or a high school melodrama), and it basically would've been the same. can't beat the setting, though, for slick action.

Review: A movie which can very well be true. This one makes you think about how close a full scale nuclear war can be. This movie was a little slow, at first, but believe me this was very action packed showing submarine operations with weapons systems and countermeasures that appear very accurate. Summary: Outstanding Fable About Philosophy of War in the Nuclear Age
Review: Granted, the plot is somewhat overblown and the lines melodramatic. But so what? This movie gets to the very essence of the philosophy of war in the nuclear age. Never before have we had to consider the annialation of the entire planet before making military decisions. Today, all nuclear powers do. And don't think that the downfall of the Soviet Union constitutes a step forward into a more secure post-atomic world. On the contrary, the proliferation of nuclear weapons throughout the old Soviet republics combined with the economic backwardness of these now independent polities poses a more poignant nuclear threat than the bipolar situation extant during the Cold War ever did.What purpose does war serves today? Is it different than 50 years ago in light of our new-found nuclear technology. Whose philosophy of war, Gene Hackman's or Denzel Washington's, will best secure America's and the world's well-being in the future? Very provocative questions in my opinion. I loved the movie.

Summary: Unrealistic and an insult to submarine professionals
Review: Dumb. Highly unlikely and highly insulting. It's ignorant movies like this that give the U.S. Navy a bad name. At least the folks who made the movie know more about submarines than the guy who wrote the novel (Richard Hendrick). Portrays relationship between Navy personnel as based on fear, tyranny, and intimidation. I've been a submariner, a Navy enlisted sailor, and a Navy Officer and was thoroughly insulted by the movie's portrayal of all. And what's up with this submarine that looks like a dungeon inside? Submarines are quite well lighted (who wouldn't go insane living in a dark hole for two months?). I sleep well knowing that this movie is so far fetched.... if this movie were plausible, we'd have already blown up the world.
