Summary: Good movie deserves better VHS treatment
Review: If only someone had warned me that this video was prerecorded in EP mode before I purchased it. That's right, EP mode (also known as SLP mode). The picture and sound are just terrible, even for an EP title.

Save your bucks for the DVD version, which (I hope) has better picture and sound and will offer this classic martial arts film the presentation it deserves.

Summary: Probably the best 'Shaolin' movie of them all
Review: In the UK this goes under the title '36 Chambers of Shaolin' which is a pretty good description of the film. A young man flees his local village after the Manchu take over, and stows away into the Shaolin Temple. The monks take pity on him and he slowly begins a rigorous training programme at the different chambers of the temple- each one designed to strengthen individual parts of the body.

The film excels in showing us his dedicated training as he progresses through these chambers, learning to fight like a Shaolin monk.

He asks for a new chamber to be created - a '36th Chamber' whereby he can train outsiders in the skills of Shaolin kung fu but is banned from the Temple for the idea. He inevitably goes back to his own village to seek vengeance on those that killed his family.

The film is both absorbing and exciting and also endlessly watchable. It's a great shame that it's not available on DVD either in the US or UK, but it's a definite must-have for any kung fu fan, seasoned or otherwise.

Summary: Keeping the rookies in their place.
Review: Now I know why the training scenes in this movie are a thing of legend. For those of you who are wondering, this IS "Enter the 36th Chamber of Shaolin," and it IS a must-see for kung fu fans of all ages.

The dubbing was acceptable. The visual quality was decent (especially considering the age of the film). According to my folks, there are a couple scenes missing here and there in the DVD, but, nonetheless, I didn't miss a thing. All the classic scenes were all still in place -- including San Te's getting sent flying backward in the 35th chamber by the single hand-wave and firm "Get out!" of an old man sitting cross-legged a few yards away.

Go for it, and enjoy!

Review: Seems like a lot of people are confusing this with other movies. The description in the review and titles listed @ allmovie.com should help clarify... anyways, this will be a review of the MOVIE not the DVD... if i were to rate the dvd, it would be a 2... dubbed only? has some extra features.

Luckily, I was able to see this an imported dvd release of this (and the subtitles were pretty decent), which is definately one of the best Shaw brothers related films. Of course it's a very good looking movie, and it incorporates a number of well nuanced yet inventive editing techniques for scene transitions and fights. Both the action and story are top notch, although both are prototypical hong kong fare. Even the training sequences, often a bore in actioners, are entertaining. The biggest problem is with the characters, who aren't given depth and are used more as game pieces (training sequences = trading pawn for queen).

I will wait in hope of a region one release with the original vocals, but this is a movie any action or hong kong martial arts fan will want to see, dubbed or not.

Summary: Great Kung Fu story and excellent scenes of Shaolin life.
Review: Shaolin Master Killer is the movie I was looking for! The star, Gordon Liu, gives a great performance as the aspiring monk Sante. As opposed to most Kung Fu films, this one is right on the money as far as the story goes. Sante was a famous Shaolin Monk whose exploits rival those shown in the film.

The scenes in the Shaolin Temple alone are more than worth the price of the video. The training methods, although dramatized, give a feel for the steadfastness of Shaolin training, and display the creativity of the monks in developing unique training methods.

The traditional one man against an army, can be forgiven as a stylistic tool of the Chinese cinema, but the scenes are beutifully staged and the choreography for the duels within Shaolin are some of the best ever seen.

Enjoy Shaolin Master Killer for what it is. The best of the genre.

Summary: Master Killer, what more can I say?
Review: The classic Gordon Liu flick is by far shaolin master killer, aka 36th chamber of shaolin. The training sequences are by far the deepest and most copied scenes in martial arts movie history. Amazing story, amazing acting, and lets not forget the amazing dubbed track, such classic elements make this the must have kung fu dvd in everyone's collection

Summary: Good movie, so-so DVD
Review: The film presented here on this DVD is really good. Shaolin Master Killer is a Gordon Liu classic, and it's one that fans of the genre should not miss.

However, the DVD isn't so great. Non-anamorphic, with a print that wasn't in great shape, the video quality of this disk is just ok. And the audio isn't terrible, but it's nothing special.

Recommended for this film.
