Rating: Summary: Gladiator the Great Review: The movie Gladiator swept me off of my feet from the beginning to the end. The action sequences were spectacular and magnificently arranged. Russel Crowe deserves an award or two for the unsuprisingly distinguished portrayal of Maximus. Joaquin Phoenix did a magnificent job on his part of an evil ruler of Rome. This movie is a MUST SEE!

Rating: Summary: Best film of 2000 Review: Gladiator was the best movie of 2000. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general in service to Marcus Aurelius. Maximus is betrayed by Aurelius' son, Commodus and ends up on the lam. Maximus falls into the hands of a slave trader and ends up becoming a gladiator. Maximus surprises both the crowd and his master with his skill in combat and quickly becomes the best in his new field of work. Rising to the Colosseum in Rome, Maximus sees his chance for revenge on Commodus. If you haven't seen this movie, I won't spoil the rest for you.As Maximus, Crowe conveys the nobility and savagery of a caged warrior. If you've seen any of Crowe's other films (The Insider, L.A. Confidential), I think you'll agree after you see Gladiator that he has a great deal of range and skill as an actor. Truly one of the best in his field today. Joaquin Phoenix surprises as Commodus with his portrayal of a ruthless man without a shred of a conscience. A pall of dread hangs over the entire story, adding to the suspense and sense of danger. Most action films aren't this good at keeping you on the edge of your seat! Director Ridley Scott has been hit and miss over the span of his career, but when he strikes a hit, boy does he! Scott's use of light, darkness and obscurity (smoke, dust, etc.) have always been his trademark and he uses them masterfully to convey emotion, mystery and action. Like his previous successes, Alien and Bladerunner, Gladiator is both poignant and yet full of hope. Each is a tale of a survivor beset on all sides by adversity. The DVD has been masterfully digitized with nary a flaw. I highly recommend the signature version which includes a second disc, containing two documentaries (The Making of Gladiator and a piece on the real historical gladiators), scenes from the cutting room floor and theatrical trailers. A very nice package overall. If you love action, suspense and darn good storytelling, don't miss out on Gladiator!
Rating: Summary: A moving epic Review: It shouldn't be necessary to say that Gladiator is a terrific epic movie. Sales continue to be high for one very good reason: it is a thrill to watch. Ridley Scott (who also directed Blade Runner, arguably the greatest science fiction movie in existance) remembers how effective a slow panning shot of a hundred flaming arrows streaking towards the enemy, or a close shot of a tiger's single swipe, can be. Crowds and long-shots of the Collesium are often computer generated, but Scott maintains a near-understatedness by focusing on a thousand extras chanting "Maximus!" or a recurring shot of a field of wheat for those moments of emotion. And he does it well. The acting is also above reproach. Russell crow is a powerhouse in every shot, and Joaquin Phoenix does well as an "evil" emporer whose faults seem at times motivated by such personal weakness (rather than cold malevolence) that we can almost sympathize with him. With a second disc of very entertaining extras, Gladiator is a must for anyone who genuinely enjoys movies. Watch it with the sound turned up.
Rating: Summary: Historical accuracy Review: Just a short comment, as a girl, I liked the DVD a lot, but I thought a lot of the violence was overdone. But well done. And just to keep the historical record straight, Commodus was real and he did fight as a gladiator. I suspect the highly paid gladiators were smart enough to not hurt him much. But he is described as a bull of a man, a very good fighter, with no fear. The extras on the DVD are almost better than the movie. Check it out.
Rating: Summary: The best action movie I've ever seen! Review: Hey if you love action movies here is one right here! It's got people fighting to fighting tigers! It's got history about where the Roman's fought like in Germania and what the Roman's did in the collosium. Like i said if you love action movies this is the best movie you will wan't to buy!
Rating: Summary: Good movie Review: The real Comodus was known to fight many times with gladiators in the circus, and in the records, he was killed by a gladiator. Although the Gladiator was probably not "Maximus" commander of the armies of the north, servent to the one true emperor..... etc. But I just want to make it clear that Comodus was a real emperor, and met his doom at the hands of a gladiator. Anyway, this, in my opinion is a very, very good movie, I have watched it multiple times already, and I will purchase it as soon as I can. Highly Recommended
Rating: Summary: The Roman Empire Meets Star Wars! Review: The battle scene at the start of this movie resembled something out of Star Wars. Great action and a superb cast, terrific acting from Russell Crowe, Oliver Reed and Peter O'Toole. A must for all, dont miss this epic tale of deceit, lies and retribution. Had me on edge from the start to the end.A must see film.
Rating: Summary: My name is Gladiator... Review: This is such a great movie. The cast does its job totally convincing, especially Connie Nielsen and of course - Russel Crowe. Zimmer's score will remind you of "the Planets" frequently, which is not bad. As for the directing... wow. Ridley Scott did it without that in-your-face gore like in other war epics. The DVD is totally brilliant. The image is quite good and the sound is spot on. Excellent DTS reference disc - like "Saving Private Ryan". The featurettes are quite informative, but not as much as the superb commentary track. Too bad they didn't get into the CGI stuff enough. I would've loved to see some comparisons. All in all - Excellent movie on an excellent disc! Also look out for the hilarious Chicken Run trailer as an easter egg. Go to the "Trailers & TV Spots" menu and press left - followed by select/enter/whatever.
Rating: Summary: Gladiator 4 Stars Review: Gladiator deserves 4 stars because I'm a big action guy and This is a great movie for people who like action movies. Maximus(Russell Crowe) is an Roman General who is a great fighter and leader but is very anxious to get back to his family. The Ceasar of Rome is Marcus Arillies is tired of fighting battles and sheding too much blood. He want's Maximus to be ceasar than his son Commidus because Maximus would put a stop to the blood shed. Commidus would do the same thing his father did. So Commidus kills his father and takes Rome into his own hands. He tries to kill Maximus and his family. Then Maximus becomes a slave and a Gladiator in the collosium. Russell Crowe was the part for Maximus. He fights Giants to Tigers! This is a very great action-packed film.
