Rating: Summary: Nemecz's Review of Gladiator Review: Hey Yo! If you want to see a movie this summer, than make it one of the greatest movies ever made, Gladiator. This movie is one that won't disapoint. This is one of my all time favorite movies. I can't wait till it comes out on dvd, but until it does, I will see it in the theatre a couple of more times. There aren't too many movies out there that you can see more than once. But Gladiator is one that you can see much more that just once. So believe me, go see this movie.
Rating: Summary: Huge in the inner and outer worlds. Review: Russell Crowe becomes as huge as a hero has to be to "win the crowd" and "show them something they have never seen before". He becomes something they (and we I hope) all want to be - a man true to his ideals even when he has every reason to bow out of the game and retreat to his hoped-for afterlife. Relish the story (love the good guy with increasing intensity, despise the bad guy and hope the others learn in the process), marvel at the spectacle (a truimph in blending computer generated scenes with beautiful and multiple locations) and get as absorbed in the characters as the players obviously did making a movie worth buying when it comes out on DVD and you finally get that home entertainment center you've been dreaming of! Then the "hero will rise" in your own home again and again.
Rating: Summary: A New Classic Review: Unfortunately due to my age the opportunity to see a classic Roman epic such as Ben Hur and Spartacus on the big screen was something I had missed. Its been a very long time since this genre has been attempted in the scale of those early films. Who better to redefine this slumbering genre to the current generation than Ridley Scott? Scott has the talent to capture imagery as well as to combine all the aspects of film making, not only to tell a tale but in capturing the imagination. His classics, Alien and Bladder Runner, showcase his talent while 1492: Conquest of Paradise reveals his ability to handle large scale historical drama. All of his previous work I believe come to fruition in Gladiator. Gladiator is a Roman era epic in the truest sense. Much like its predecessors it is strong on action, sentiment, production, and imagery though all aspects are upgraded for the pallet of the modern movie goer. Brutality is clearly defined which allows the battle sequences an element of realism as opposed to romanticized swordplay. Each character was well cast and added their talents to the overall feel, mood, and direction of the film. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix both were exceptional in conveying the complexities of emotion as well as the actions of their characters. The use of veteran actors such as Oliver Reed and Richard Harris added a nice touch as well. Overall the look was gorgeous, mesmerizing, and immense. The dark and brooding nature of the film added to the emotional complexities of the script as well as to the various settings depicted. From the standpoint of an action adventure-holic, Gladiator is a new classic and has revitalized this genre on a grand scale. Its about time!!!
Rating: Summary: Gladiator Review: I think this movie is grate. It's the best movie ever done for all this years. The actors Russel Crowe (Maximus) and Joaquin Phonex (Commodus) were exelent. All the graphics were well done. This movie has slow and fast motion and I can't call it boring, because its take you from the start to the end of the movie and you can't pretend what is going to happend. It dosn't matter it 3 hours, because the time go fast when you see this movie. I think this movie deserves the oscar nomination.
Rating: Summary: Great Sword & Sandle Action in the Steve Reeves Mode. Review: Russell Crowe is outstanding! Oliver Reed and Rolfe Mueller are a great supporting cast. Joaquin Phoenix was the best of evil. A great tribute to Steve Reeves who started the genre back in the 1950s, who had just past away on May 1st. I hope other producers take the hint on the success of this movie and bring back many more of the Sword & Sandle genre. Heroes you can believe in. I predict the movie will not only be a great success, but will bring in at least 150 million and spark similar productions. Special Effects worthy of the oscar.
Rating: Summary: Russell Crowe - The ulimate gladiator Review: Well what can I say, this movie truly is one of epic gladiatorial proportions. Russell Crowe shines, (until covered in the blood and guts of others) as the films hero, maximus. The basic plot, while predictable, moves along seemlessly, as maximus gains the ultimate in revenge. The scenery, mainly computer generated, is awe inspiring, did the coliseum really look this good? The are excellent small parts by the dying Richard Harris and the already dead Oliver Reed(Truly an Entertainer). Phoenix is believable as the the wretched new crowned emperer, who is as miserable as he is conniving. The fight scenes are a gore fest, and Crowe makes the triads look like shrimp fishermen. See this film and buy the DVD as and when its available, this picture is what DVD was made for.
Rating: Summary: Great Movie! R. Crowe Has "It" in Spades! Review: Exhilarating battle sequences. Want to feel like you're in the midst of the dirt, noise, absolute terror and chaos of hand-to-hand combat? "Gladiator" will provide. This epic had everything: Romance, intrigue, incest, family values, war, love of country, love of an ideal, honor, courage. Needless to say, I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: gladiator will leave you spellbound Review: I can't remember the last time a saw a movie where everyone in the theater was completly entranced. The entire audience at the Cinerama, downtown Seattle was spell bound by this film, including me. We were not sure what was going to happen and it was so visually compelling that we were lost in an hypnotic state, holding our breath for the next incredible event. Russell Crowe has become a star in this film and the rest of the players are perfectly cast. Bravo. I want to see it again.
Rating: Summary: A Hero Will Rise Review: Gladiator was somewhat very long that dragged in some parts BUT it was also a thrill when the action arose (wow!). Russell Crowe is easily one of my favorite actors and he did, of corse, a terrific job playing Maximus. It started off with a bang and ended with one too and yet somewhere between were very long dialogues that took up time. Overall I'm not saying that Gladiator is stupid, because it's obviously not. What I am saying is that the length of the film just makes the viewer less interested. There's not doubt that Gladiator won't be a hit with thousands maybe millions but in all truth it just wasn't all that big of a hit that I expected.
Rating: Summary: A Blockbuster with brains Review: Seriously, I don't think there will be a better summer movie this year than Gladiator. Hell, i won't be surprised if it picks up a couple of Oscars along the way. Seriously. The film is visually scrumptious, brilliantly acted and sharply written. You could not ask for a better hero than Russell Crowe who keeps you on the edge of your seat with his unbelievably realistic performance. Joaquin Pheonix is perfect - he plays a very complicated character and does not ruin it by playing a one dimensional villain. He actually makes us feel pity for him at times. Even more surprising is Connie Nielsen - what a shocking entrance into films. Not only is she a brilliant actress, she's strikingly beautiful. She looks very natural in role and never overacts. The film, by the way, is not only fighting. There are some incredible action scenes though. Ridley Scott stays the most underrated director - I can't wait to see what he does with Hannibal. In all, GLADIATOR is a film not to miss. In my opinion (and I'm not joking), it is the best picture so far this year.
