Rating: Summary: Reflection of human being's cruelty Review: This is a good movie. Although the event was occurred in the ancient time of Roman Empire, it reflected human beings' cruelty and greediness of power. It's a good example in the present world, too. Politics have no mercy indeed. Killing is a must. So, at that time the real life was true. Luckily we have democracy to make this world going to be fair and right.

Rating: Summary: One Of The Best Films Of 2000! Review: I don't know if it's just me or what, but I feel 2000 has turned out to be one of the worst years for movies! Maybe it's just the choices I've made (Check my other reviews for that)but everything just seems to disappoint me. But this film changed all that. Great directing by Ridley Scott, great acting by the entire cast, but the standouts are of course, Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, who I feel should without any doubt whatsoever should be nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. I truly hated his character in this film. I wanted Crowe to get his revenge, and kill him! It was that sort of intensity Phoenix brought to the role. He actually made me hate him. And for that I award him. And Connie Nielsen wasn't bad to look at either! I don't know if an Oscar nomination should come her way or not, but she did definitely bring something special to the table. Unbelieveable special effects here, definite Oscar material! Production and costume design also deserve nominations. But enough about all the Oscar talk, lets get to the movie. The story is one everyone should be able to follow and it will definitely grab your attention. I found the first battle scene a little to hard to follow. There seemed to be too much going on! It looked like the camera couldn't get everything. As the film goes on we really start to care about our "Gladiator", especially after the gruesome fate of his wife and son. We follow him (willingly) on his journey to get revenge. Along the way there are many spectacular things to see. Mainly the wonderful production and costumes designs, and great locatin sites. There's even explosive battle scenes, all of which are fill with plent of gore! So you can tell this isn't a family movie, younger childern will find these secnes hard to look at. I noticed some childern actually crying! This is a powerful, touching movie that will leave you asking for more. In time this may even become a classic. But for now it remains as one of the best films of the year! Everyone should hurry to see this modern masterpiece, you will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: History repeats itself Review: While the obvious comparisons to Braveheart may be made (one man stands against empire, historical epic)I enjoyed Gladiator for very different and visceral reasons. Russel Crowe is superb as Maximus, Andalusian general for the hordes of Rome. The opening attack scenes are utterly breathtaking (similar in scope to the aforementioned Braveheart) and while not wholly historical, WHO CARES? The movie moves at a decent pace and the supporting cast holds up (and I must admit a certain fondness to see Derek Jacoby in a toga again!). The online naysayers here seem to have missed some of the films more subtle undertones. It's much more than the apparent bloody spectacle associated with the title (though it will sate any action fans appetite as well). All in all this is a powerful, thrilling plunge into a fictional Rome that is well worth the price.
Rating: Summary: Come on come on. Review: Come on come on when is this movie coming out on DVD? WOW, what a movie, WHAT A MOVIE. Where has Russell Crowe been hiding all this time? I've seen this movie twice in the theater and I can't wait till it's on DVD. Great acting, great story, great picture, great effects, great directing, great supporting actors, great music, did I miss anything? If you like history and great movies, then here it is ladies and gentlemen G L A D I A T O R.
Rating: Summary: CROWE & REED Review: I am still baffled by the public's embrace of this film. The Ridley Scott method of wiping away character with moody art design and a "look" has never been more apparent than in this strangley remote action thriller. Russell Crowe and Oliver Reed, in his last film performance, manage to rouse the viewer with their own smoldering personalities, certainly not because of the story, which is so far from reality as to be laughable. Nowhere in this film do you get a sense of real people; of a Roman native living his life, of the sweat and toil of life then, of the true viciousness of the gladiator battles (the SFX are distractingly disjointed; everything looks like stop-motion, or like the film got off its track); would it not have been so much more intoxicating if you cared about someone, or watched people eat or bathe or live in this astoundingly fascinating period of history? Nope, I will hold out until a creative filmmaker makes a Roman epic that uses contemporary technology to bring the sweat and tears of another age to life. This movie actually looks like it was shot on Tatooine, and what is up with that yodeling on the soundtrack? I could not wait for this movie, and I can't remember when I was more disappointed.
Rating: Summary: TERRIBLE .. Review: Let me see.. how many times have I seen this screenplay, that run more or less like that: " You've killed my wife and my son. Now I'm very angry. I'm gonna kill you ". That's it. The only thing that changes is the scenario and the budget to shoot the film. This Gladiator is so bad, so clichezed, so stereotyphed. THey begun with a great battle scene to catch the audience's attention, then everything falls down. So unbeliavable, so historically innacurate, so brainless. I think this is what the public wants, and the producers and Ridley Scott gave that to us !
Rating: Summary: The best film about Roman History Review: Firstly, a big thumbs up to director Ridley Scott who has churned out an excellent story of injustice and revenge. The story is about a dying king, Marcus Aurelius, who wants to leave his kingdom in the hands of Maximus(Russell Crowe). Aurelius's son, Commodus, objects to this decision and kills Aurelius. His next target is Maximus himself. Maximius escapes and tries to reunite with his family but he gets there too late. His family was brutally murdered by the Commodus's forces, who never knew about Aurelius's decision. He is found by a slave trader who takes him as a slave and makes him a gladiator. The second half of the film talks about how Maximus goes back to Rome and avenges his family's death by killing Commodus. The graphics of the film and the graphical recreation of the Colloseum are very realistic. A huge effort has been put in by the creative team behind Gladiator and I would recommend this film to anyone. Although a bit violent, it's a great movie and shows how brutal the duels were in ancient Rome. Russel Crowe is at his best and suits the role a lot. Overall, the film is excellent and a must-see.
Rating: Summary: Historical movie Review: Gladiator, played by Russel Crowe reveal in spectacular way the live of a Roman General (Elius Maximus Decimus Meridius), that lives just at the end of the time of the last Stoic Emperor (Marcus Aurelius). This movie is specialy detailed in the real way of combat, the social clases, the politics, the power and defeat of the Roman Empire. For the people who watch this movie with special attention and are really intrested in some historical facts (even if the argument is not completely true) will find the most grat movie ever made of the Roman Empire. The roles played, the action scenes, the combination between both of them makes this movie one of the jewels of the 7th. art
Rating: Summary: We Who Are About to Snooze Salute You Review: Thus the combatants would have spoken had the Games forced them not to engage in combat mortal but to a much more terrifying fate: to be forced to watch "Gladiator." At over two and a half hours (it only seemed like six and a half), this landmark in cinematic ennui poses only one threat greater than having to watch it: having to watch it again. When Maximus' family is slaughtered in the first 35 minutes, you know that he's not going to be around at the closing credits. And the viewer's mood parallels Maximus' throughout the movie: there's pain all along the way with doom at the payoff. The first twenty minutes of this film earn it its one star. The opening battle scenes are truly thrilling, but only serve to highlight the stupefyingly boring nature of the remaining two hours. If your aim is to overcome a massive case of insomnia, run to see "Gladiator." If entertainment is what you crave, run faster, but run away from this tedious turkey. Forget the Ides of March, beware any day this bomb explodes on the screen.
