Review: A great "B" grade film which I already own on VHS. I will not buy the DVD, or recommend anyone else buy it, until it is re-released in letterbox format (which is why I give this version 2 stars).

Review: If this film was in a Keep case (which now, after 3 years of release, it is), and it was WIDESCREEN, it would be a quick buy
for me. As it is, I have to hold on to my aging VHS copy. I really wanted this for my DVD collection, but this film, like TIMECOP have been poorly packaged, and put out. Who wants FULLScreen on DVD? Alec Baldwin and the rest of the cast do a GREAT job in this fun, campy, tounge-and-cheek film, based on an old comic book. I love this film. If you like films like: Tremmors, the Phantom, Men in Black, Charlie's Angeles, then you like this as well. But I wish it was Widescreen. It lost a star for that.

Summary: "The Shadow knows..."
Review: "The Shadow" is something like Batman, Superman, the Phantom, and other comic superheroes, but on the other hand, it is very unlike them in that... I totally loved it! Alec Baldwin is Lamont Cranston, known as Yiinko in Tibet as a drug lord. He is one of the most evil and barbaric men there, until one day he is brought up to a strange priest named Tulku (Brady Tsurutani). Tulku tells Cranston that he must redeem himself by fighting crime and that he will teach him how to 'cloud men's minds'. Having no choice, Cranston learns from the priest. Seven years later, Cranston returns to New York City (of course it has to be New York City!) and fights crime. He is known to others only as 'the Shadow' because though he has the power of invisibility, there is one thing that he cannot hide and that is his shadow. The Shadow finds out that Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last descendant of Genghis Khan, comes to New York. Shiwan had also been under the instruction of Tulku, to be redeemed from his evil ways but instead turned on Tulku, killing him, then using his new powers to his own evil purpose. And that is to conquer the world. He at first tries to have Cranston join him but Cranston refuses. Shiwan Khan uses the help of his warriors, a mad scientist Farley Claymore (Tim Curry), and absent-minded Dr. Reinhardt Lane (Ian McKellen) to create a bomb to destroy the city. But Shiwan is not the only one with help. Because with the unexpected help of the daughter of Dr. Lane, Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller) with her telepathic powers and Moe Shrevnitz (Peter Boyle), Cranston has a plan to stop Shiwan. But it will be difficult with Cranston's troubled heart and Shiwan's mind powers which may surpass even the power of 'the Shadow'. I'm very surprised that this movie didn't get very popular. There are many reasons why this movie is so wonderful. I've always loved good-looking Alec Baldwin, especially in his role as Jack Ryan in "The Hunt for Red October". In this movie his acting and expressions are very good along with the acting done by beautiful Penelope Ann Miller, great John Lone, funny Jonathon Winters as Lamont's uncle, and everyone else. Except for maybe Tim Curry, I've never really liked him. Though some people may not like it for it being pretty corny, I thought that's what it made it so fun to watch! The action is cool, especially the end where Alec Baldwin hunts down John Lone with all the mirrors and glass in the room. The witty humor in it gave this movie also a right touch. I love the part where Margo Lane keeps interrupting Lamont Cranston because she can read his mind and knows what he's going to say. The music is just fantastic, giving the movie a creepy feeling to it. The cinematography and the gothic scenes also help. And I totally agree with everyone, the F/X were pretty terrific! From the really scary Fulba the knife, the shadows, Baldwin's blue eyes becoming black, the Shadow's invisibility, and the end where all of the mirrors shatter, these F/Xs will dazzle you. There's also the costumes which I was really impressed with with Margo's evening gowns and furs which were stunning and even Lamont's suits, the hat (especially the hat!), and his Shadow outfit. You know, at the end where Baldwin has the hat, the cape, and scarf off, his outfit really looks like Neo's in the movie, "Matrix" (Alec Baldwin looks so cool wearing this outfit with his chrome .45's in his hands!). Here are a few of my most favorite lines from the movies:
(Lamont is staring at the lovely Margo while not paying attention to his Uncle Wainright) Uncle Wainwright: "Why am I talking to the back of your neck?! Lamont?!" (Uncle Wain talking about Margo) Uncle Wainright: "What do you see in her?"
Lamont: "Uncle Wainright, are you sure you're not dead?" (After Margo keeps interrupting Lamont because she knows his thoughts) Lamont: Um, do you mind if I just get one tiny little sentence out here?" (When Lamont starts to leave Margo) Margo: "Hey, how will you know where I am?"
Lamont (mysteriously smiles): "I'll know." Put it all together, you have a great movie which is entertaining and so much fun to watch!! A superb movie though very unrecognized, "The Shadow" will be one of my favorite movies to watch for a long, long time!

Summary: A good movie
Review: While leading a dissipated life in Tibet, Lamont Cranston (Played by Alec Baldwin) falls under the influence of an ancient wise man (James Hong) who teaches him how to use an ancient wisdom to fight for good. Returning to the United States, Cranston takes on the role of The Shadow, a nearly magical hero who wages war on the forces of crime. But, things are about to get much harder. Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last descendent of Genghis Khan has a plan to take over the whole world. As Shiwan Khan hash similar powers to his own, only The Shadow can hope to overcome him. [Color, created in 1994, with a running time of 1 hour, 48 minutes.] After hearing numerous negative comments about this movie, I watched it with some trepidation. However, I must admit that I was quite pleasantly surprised. This movie is stunningly produced, with excellent scenes. The characters are interesting, even if not often believable. The action is quite gripping, but is restrained, thus keeping the movie within a PG-13 rating. With no overt sex, and restrained violence, this movie is very family-friendly. So, if you looking for a good Saturday night movie to watch, then I recommend this movie to you.

Review: OK, so the production values are just period perfect! Could not ask for better casting - Alec Baldwin is dashing [a youthful Ray Milland perhaps?] as Lamont Cranston! Penelope Ann Miller brings a great sense of period, style, and comedy to her Margo lane, Ian McKellen - aptly befuddled as the father/scientist, and not forgetting, underrated JOHN LONE as our arch villian. So, what's wrong with this picture - yeah, it's the picture folks, here we have a product, superbly presented, with all the necessary [nothing lacking] bells and whistles, and this version is CROPPED! Where, Oh Where is the all important widescreen version? It's been shown on TV in that format, what went wrong? It's still well-worth having on DVD, but get with it folks!

Summary: The Weed of Hollywood Bears Mediocre Films!
Review: Let me start by saying this isn't a terrible film,but it has many problems. Chiefly is Alec Baldwin,whom suffers the same problem all pretty boy actors in these type of films suffer, "I don't want to be the hero character the whole film,or wear a mask,or obscure my face". Well Mr.Movie Star......the film is called "The Shadow" not "Lamont Cranston".( Nor do we want a film called "Bruce Wayne Returns" or "Clark Kent The Quest For Peace".). While Alec Baldwin is in The Shadow personna he is great,not just his presence,but the cool special effects used to make him quite "shadowy"...but when he is Lamont Cranston,he is trying too hard for the Adam West style of campiness,that only worked for Adam West. That said...the film is based largely on a Shadow novel titled "The Golden Master",in which the decendant of Ghengis Khan is poised to take over the world,by any and all means,and using powers nearly surpassing The Shadow's own! Shiwan Khan is played brilliantly by John Lone,with just the right amount of evil and barbarian suave.The director does a great job with the look and feel of the film,and a bit of an homage to Tim Burton. Other Shadow character are here too... Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller),is a bit more ditzy than the original,but she works and Jonathan Winters puts in a great semi-comic performance as Commissioner Barth. The Shadow is limited to three operatives in this story, "Dr.Roy Tam" (Sab Shimono),who's induction we get to see,"Burbank"(Andre Gregory),seen in the shadows running the information bureau,and "Moe Shrevnitz",the taxi driving get-away man, a wonderful role for Peter Boyle! The bad news is the waste of Ian McKellan as the absent minded Dr.Lane,he just doesn't have the accent down,and it seems kind of forced,why not just use either an American actor,or have him be British? Speaking of which...yes Tim Curry is in this film....usually not the best of news. Tim tries really hard to be an American mobster,and it just doesn't work. Again...why waste a British actor? Oh well...the film starts off really good,with a look back at Lamont Cranston's early days,and why he MUST be the Shadow,and the basics of the story itself are fairly well presented,reformed evil/good vs. pure evil,and of course The Shadow conquers all.Comic in parts,on purpose most of the time,dramatic in other parts,mystical,and chock full of fist fights,and guns that never seem to run out of bullets! It would've been interesting to see what the follow up film would've been like.For now,only The Shadow knows!

Review: Alec Baldwin is GREAT for Lamont. He pulls it off very well. Nuances are taken with effects in the movie, such as they way his eyes shift when he's... well... dratit that'll ruin it for you. The costuming and setting are done well, with great effects. The supporting cast is great. I love where their bullets meet. Definitly recommend this one. :)
