Summary: Great Viewing - over and over again
Review: This is one of my all-time favorite films. It contains an all-star cast - Garner, Bronson, McQueen, Coburn, etc. - each playing a role that might have been written for him. The result is the development of characters that the viewer truly comes to know.

Even if you've seen the film several times, your heart will start pounding half-way through and you won't relax until the end. Such is the pace of the movie - very quick for its day - though it avoids the frantic, quick-cut style popular today.

Summary: my best-movie....ever!
Review: I really enjoyed this film, I've watched it about 75 times, and never get bored of it. I have also read the book, and that is twice as good as the movie....Hell, they are both superb! The story is well told by Paul Brickhill, also, it's a true story!

Summary: King of Cool!
Review: The Great Escape is in my Top Five--the action, the characters, the soundtrack! McQueen didn't just become a star with this film--he became a superstar over night. Nobody has ever equalled McQueen's ice cool manner and this was the film that saw it brought to light. He isn't actually even on screen that much, but his personality dominates the whole film. As the "Cooler King", McQueen refuses to give in to pressure when imprisoned in solitary confinement. His definace is exhibited in the famous scenes where he's bouncing a baseball against the concrete walls of his lonely cell. The final parting shot, after it's been reveled that 50 POWs were murdered by the Gestapo, has an unseen McQueen bouncing his baseball in his cell, while the camera is on a young German guard who pauses to look back in the direction of the cell door as he hears the incessant pounding of the ball. Absolutely one of the great shots in motion picture history. The essence of the entire 3 hours of movie is summed up in that one shot.

Summary: A Great Movie
Review: I just bought this movie on DVD, and I love it. Possibly one of the greatest war movies ever made. And an all star cast, Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, James Donald, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence and James Coburn. Phew, buy the movie you won't regret it!

Summary: One of the Best
Review: This is my very favorite movie! It's about a group of Allied prisoners who are all escape artists. The Germans put them all together in one prison camp. They've put "all their rotten eggs in one basket", or so the German commandant says. BIG MISTAKE! These guys aren't hanging around in no prison camp when they can be out making trouble for the enemy and keeping them occupied away from the front! (the duty of every officer, you know) They pool their genius and plan to tunnel out. It has an amazing cast of Steve McQueen, James Coburn, James Garner, Charles Bronson, and Richard Attenborough. These guys can really act! There is a lot of dry humor (the potato moonshine), suspense (the night of the escape, you are just about gnawing your nails off!), and action (McQueen's motorcycle ride, etc.). Garner is good as the "Scrounger", and Bronson is really cool as the claustrophobic "Tunnel King" Danny Velinski, who digs his tunnels because he "must get out." This movie is definitely a must see. It's THE BEST!

Summary: Not that accurate to the true story
Review: This is the best film about P.O.W.s in World War 2 I've ever seen. Plan to break out over 200 prisoners from Stalag Luft 3 in Germany is based entirely on a true story, with the events taken from the fine Paul Brickhill novel. However it is not completely accurate. Steve McQueens's character never existed, and it was snowing at the time of the breakout. Also, a second compound was built for the Americans and they were moved there before the breakout. Steve McQueen's character should nver have been there anyway. Oh well. Complaints I read about German guards being too 'nice' are wrong. That's the way they were according to the novel, and the novel is completely true. But once the Gestapo took over the camp nobody dared to try to escape (they would be shot). Very good movie. Not to be missed!

Summary: Must see for McQueen fans!
Review: Watching this movie one sees exactly what the big deal is about Steve McQueen. Only McQueen could give such an easy presence on the screne. His performance as a typical American is worth all the other excellent performances in this film combined. There is not an actor today that conveys the respect and admiration that he is able to through his characters. As far as the movie is concerned, it was not memorable. Don't get me wrong, the plot, story, and acting are all great. As a WWII movie goes this is excellent. However, others have been done better (Dirty Dozen, Private Ryan). It is McQueen's and everyone elses performances that make the film worth seeing.

Summary: The Great Joke
Review: I am in utter disbelief by the amount of positive reviews this movie received. It is a sad state of affairs when so many people rank this movie in the same class with movies like Patton, The Longest Day, and Cross of Iron. This film was a joke from start to finish. I felt like the director got his insight on German behavior from watching re-runs of Hogan's Heroes. This movie had no depth, no moments that made you respect war, and the intensity(which is a must in war movies) ranked right up there with Cannonball Run. Well, that is all I have to say about that.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Possibly the best movie of all time.
Review: This movie has the best characters in Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, and James Garner. I am 15 years old and this movie makes me want to live in the WWII era. It is suspensful, funny, and witty. I've seen the movie over 10 times and it just gets better. It has some of the best scenes written and acted. It's a must buy.
