Summary: very disappointing
Review: I rented this movie, but was thoroughly disappointed at it's blasse, War is hell message that everyone has tried to do in the past 70 years. I am truly stunned at those who found profound meaning to this long, dull movie. It crossed the line and wasted my time. Those who found meaning here were either starved for something to do, or simply creating something in their minds that certainly didn't exist on screen. Bad movie.

Summary: EXCELLENT

Summary: A Nice Try... a good movie, but not a "great" movie.
Review: The movie was great as far as Cinematography, Visual Metaphors and other artsy stuff (for all that I give it 5 Stars). But the plot was incoherent and drawn out. I understand the point they were trying to make, but it didn't "draw me in" in any way. In comparison, "Apocalypse Now" keeps me on the edge of my seat every time I watch it (granted it starts out slow, but it always slowly reels me in). To put it simply: I missed the first 20 minutes of this movie, so I thought maybe I missed something there and went back and watched it (it only confirmed how detached the movie left me). Like I said nice try, next time try coming up with an actual "plot" that is worthy of such a long film.

Summary: Good
Review: I liked it. Sure, it's flawed - Malick is wrestling with some big questions, sometimes clumsily, but at least he's trying. How many other movies coming out of major U.S. studios do that these days? The combat footage rivals that of "Private Ryan". It held my interest all the way though.

Summary: It's a deep movie if you ain't that deep yourself.
Review: WAR IS HORRIBLE. Wow! How deep, how insightful, how positively mind-boggling!!! I would have never figured that one out. I'd have thought the movie meant to say war is the best thing that ever happened to mankind. Don't know how anybody managed to decipher such a profound, seminal message. You must all have an IQ that makes a MENSA member look like a total retard.

Congratulations, all ye staggeringly clever and sophisticated admirers of The Thin Red Line! You've scaled an intellectual height so forbiddingly lofty, that it must go down in history as one of the greatest triumphs of the human intellect! And make no mistake, all of you deserve to be canonized and more for so gallantly putting the great unwashed in their place with such cultured, brilliant verbal inventions. "Meatheads", "stupid", "brainless", "dumb" . . . What poetry! What lyricism! What linguistic genius! Surely, no one has ever done as much to enrich and invigorate the lexicon of artistic discussion. And for no less noble a cause than the pillorying of such ignoramuses as dared to say they did not find this cinematic masterpiece to their liking!!!

Long after we've gone from the scene, this will be remembered as Terence Mallick's finest hour.

Summary: lets not have a civil war over a film.
Review: War is not entertainment. If you are looking for a muscle-bound hero with a camoflauge headband and an American flag in his hand, look somewhere else. This is not a war movie, it is thoughtful and beautifully-shot film awash with complex themes of the human nature. It is a work of art. But if you'd rather watch the superbowl and go hunting that's cool too.

Summary: The Best
Review: I am amazed that people are trashing this film. It is completely obvious that anyone who rates it with one star is just blaming the movie for their own incompetence and frustration. Just because it went way over your head doesn't mean it is a bad film. I will watch this with my children some day and hope that they too can question the nature of humanity as well as all living creatures who inhabit the Earth. I have thought about its message for days and I wish that more people in this country would use their minds instead of acting like brainless meatheads.

Summary: I would like to give a negative star rating
Review: If it were possible, I would give a minus 2 star rating. This movie, which I watched with my father, a veteran of the era, was best described in his own words. "Garbage." I felt duped into seeing this movie because of the sheer number of big stars on the roster, but instead was bored out of my mind by the numbing stupidity of the story. The only saving grace was the cinematography, which was spectacular. Just no story. Horrible, predictable ending. This movie did a favor to all the other bad movies I'd ever seen, by elevating them because it was so bad.

Summary: Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line: war and reality

Summary: A yawn that tries to look deep.
Review: Sorry, showing a bunch of grunts running around scared out of their wits while you hear their voices reciting pseudo-poetry is not sophisticated film-making; it's just a clumsy, heavy-handed attempt at scoring stylistic points. And it's just pathetic the way this movie has so many people crowing about their own intellectual superiority just because they happen to like it. It's proof positive that this actually is a movie for very shallow people. By taking trite, hackneyed sentiments, couching them in stilted, spuriously philosophical language, and topping it off with some run-of-the-mill nature footage, this movie has succeeded in duping many people into thinking it's "deep" and "artistic". No, it's just an overblown and very self-indulgent piece of work that tries too hard to be great, and ends up taking way too long to say nothing.
