Summary: Actually, Not So Bad
Review: I did not think I would like this love story set against the backdrop of the events of December 7, 1941. However, I enjoyed it. It was not "From Here to Eternity" but it was no better or worse than "Titanic". I think others were surprised by how much they liked it and I think this explains the success the movie has had in DVD sales.

We have yet to see an Oscar caliber Bay-Bruckheimer collaboration and I did not expect to see that when I rented and eventually bought this movie. The movie was not purely factual and most movies rarely are, but there was enough history to make viewers curious enough to explore the history of this event on their own. It has never been a good idea to rely on a movie to learn history!

Yes, the script was pure cliche' and hardly worthy of the talents of Ben Affleck (Rafe), Josh Hartnett (Danny), and Kate Beckinsale (Evelyn). The vaccination scene was amusing, so was the scene where Rafe offers Evelyn some french champagne. Touching scenes involving these characters included Evelyn having to decide which patients should receive morphine or at the end when Rafe and Danny are in occupied China. I did like the movie's attempts to provide some insight into Japan's motivation for the bombing. I felt that was unique aspect of the movie.

The ultimate problem with the movie is that neither the writer (Randall Wallace) nor director (Bay) were patient enough to develop these characters who could have been potentially more complex. Rafe's dyslexia and daring nature, Danny's troubled childhood and moody disposition, and Evelyn's father who was a pilot who apparently lost his wings should have been explored in further detail. The movie should probably have been called something other than "Pearl Harbor" to prepare viewers for the fact this is mainly a love story (I believe the real intent of the "sugary-sweet" love story was to symbolize how the bombing raid on Pearl Harbor shattered America's innocence).

This would have been a better movie with a different title and a "R" rating. However, on the whole, it was satisfying entertainment that gets a higher rating after the September 11th events. I think America can now relate to the feeling of innocence being shattered.

Summary: Excellent Five star movie
Review: 'Pearl Harbor is simply one of the greatest movies I have seen in a long time.It wasn't until someone recommended this movie to me that I took an intrest.I never wanted to see it in the cinema, but know I wish I had.It is also hard to believe that it performed so poorly in UK box office.I believe like many movies 'Pearl Harbor will find its audience outside the cinema and in our homes.I have seen many corny American movie and to be honest believed this was going to be one of them and that it was going to be a 3-hour cheese fest.I was wrong. There are alot of negative reviews here, more than I expected but that is fair enough as everyone is entitled to their opinion.I guess people are really hard to please these days. Two very big thumbs up for the powerful epic.

Summary: One of my all time favorite movies.
Review: I was a bit skeptical about seeing Pearl Harbor at first. When it was released in theaters I passed it up thinking it was going to be boring documentry type deal, but after watching it when it was released on DVD,I loved it.Its not just a story of the tradgety Pearl Harbor, but a story of love and the effect of WW2 on the different characters Rafe,Danny, and Evely. Not to mention one of the sadest endings iv'e ever seen.Rafe goes off to Europe to fight the Nazi's while Evelyn and Danny are stantioned at Pearl Harbor. After receiving word that Rafe has died in action.Danny and Evelyn fall in love. This all turns upside down. When Rafe turns up alive and returns to Pearl Harbor to see his love. The attack scenes are well done. All of the characters in the movie are played out well and Ben Affleck gives a unforgettable performance.

Summary: The hype was its enemy.
Review: Pearl Harbor was superbly marketed almost everyone knew about this movie.I went into this movie being very excited, but when the movie started 20 mins into it I got bored, the romance should have been atleast serious,no spark between Kate and Ben,this looked like a slap-stick comedy.Cuba Gooding Jr. didn't even have
a big role,i have no idea what he was doing here. The romance failed to topple over Enemy of the Gates romance, the battles failed to top over Saving Private Ryan.Michael Bay is too paranoid, and during some romance scenes he just cuts into a war build-up.Acting is horrible.Could be the worst movie of the year.Doesn't even deserve a rating.

Rating: 5 stars
