Summary: Gladiator - This Year's Must See
Review: I hail from Britain and I saw Gladiator at my local cinema last night. Whilst I am not sure that the history was accurate and something which I will investigate, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I visited the Colosseum last autumn - even now so many centuries after it was built it retains a presence and an atmosphere all its own. What Ridley Scott managed to do with his digital crew recreated it in its magnificence and breathed life into the skeleton of what remains today.

This is the first film I have seen starring Russell Crowe and I thought he was wonderful in the part - he has real screen presence. He was well supported by some stalwart British actors, notably Oliver Reed and Derek Jacobi and Joaquin Phoenix came of age as an actor - his performance for such a young man had a marvellous mixture of monster and child. The set pieces were breathtaking - you could almost taste the effect that walking out into the arena for the first time had on the gladiators newly arrived in the big city. And the opening sequence, shot in a forest in southern England was one of the best I have seen in recent time.

This for me is a must see - I will certainly buy the film when it is released on DVD.

Summary: Simple and Perfect
Review: This is one of the best movies that I have ever seen. It's so simple, so brilliant, and so perfect. It was released in 2000, but it's already a Hollywood Classic. I just hope the dvd to come soon.

Summary: Playing it safe.
Review: Sword & Sandals, a.k.a peplum, genre was dead for decades. Ridley Scott looked not like his old self with that White Squall and other flops. The combined comeback seemed like a good idea. -"Back In Business!"-

When Clint Eastwood finally realized that Western is really dead he came up with the revisionist Unforgiven and walked away with an armful of Oscars.

But Gladiator is not tainted by any kind of revisionism. It is linear, even simplistic in plot, dialogues and characterization.

The much advertised opening battle is impressive but it's main purpose is evidently to demonstrate the scale of the film's financing and justify your behind's presence in that moment in that chair.

I like Russell Crowe very much - as well as all the guys from The L.A. Confidential. They are doing well now - just look at Kevin Spacey!

But I saw Russell glowering and bursting in rage in Romper Stomper, in the film noir that took him into the spotlight and now in Gladiator.

I am not sure it will look equally endearing for the 4th, 5th time. We hate to see the guy hurt and cheer up when he strikes back but how long will it last?

What film is lacking in depth it tries to compensate with special effects, but for me it's not SO important whether they make The Forum in papier-mache, paint it on a huge canvas or put up a computer-generated image.

I'd exchange all that digital splendor for a better dialogue, a touch of human complexity and the sense of history that exceeds an occasional Latin phrase we hear in the film and the accuracy in costume design that only the specialists can verify.

The simplicity of the film is not of the kind that comes with having to cut some extra branches masterfully to get the graceful sillhouette. It looks more like following the designated path through the minefield. So much is at stake - the director's comeback, the genre's revival, the studio's investment - they are afraid of making a wrong step.

But when all the "right" steps are taken what do we see?

Not much.

Summary: Epic of Braveheart quality
Review: Not since Braveheart has a film about a near forgotten era captured imaginations like Gladiator. Superb performances abound, along with beautifully choreographed combat scenes combined for one of the best movies in recent memory. A must-see and undoubtedly one of the years (and several other years as well) best.

Summary: A hero has definitely risen!
Review: Now that this massive epic has come to Brazil I have managed to see it, and I am wholeheartedly satisfied. All the cast delivered superlative performances, highlightin Joaquin Phoenix as Commdous and of course Russel Crowe as Maximus.

The battle scenes were brilliantly executed. The time literally flew by as I sat down to watch this film, and it really did deliver all the goods, so to speak. The music, which is always something vital for the making of a good film, was also beautiful. No wonder this film has received the laudatory comments it has, so far. I am not surprised. I agree totally! This is definitely a film I'd like to have in my collection, and I believe I am not the only one who thinks so.

Summary: Gladiator - the next Oscar Winner
Review: I have seen Gladiator 6 times already...I just can't get enough! This movie, with its beautiful scenery, exquisite soundtrack and great stars will just make your day. Russell Crowe is a very talented actor who shows that you can overcome anything life throws your way if you just believe that you can do it. Looking forward to owning this video!

Summary: As usual.. Ridley moves beyond is beyond his time...
Review: Ridley will probably be remembered for three epic master pieces.. the cult classics Alien and Blade Runner and this mainstream monster. A film that is a Gladiator in itself, grandiose, superb with a touch of flair. It could be argued the film is a touch too long, does not deal with specific concepts (as his films have done in the past) and is too brash, a boys film. But these critiques draw from Ridley's past efforts, and this effort fits perfectly with our finger twitch, remote control culture. Ridley inks every moment, every grain of film for all its worth in a spectacular hark back to the days of grand roman epics. A must see for anyone who appreciates a good film.
