Rating: Summary: The best film about Roman History Review: Firstly, a big thumbs up to director Ridley Scott who has churned out an excellent story of injustice and revenge. The story is about a dying king, Marcus Aurelius, who wants to leave his kingdom in the hands of Maximus(Russell Crowe). Aurelius's son, Commodus, objects to this decision and kills Aurelius. His next target is Maximus himself. Maximius escapes and tries to reunite with his family but he gets there too late. His family was brutally murdered by the Commodus's forces, who never knew about Aurelius's decision. He is found by a slave trader who takes him as a slave and makes him a gladiator. The second half of the film talks about how Maximus goes back to Rome and avenges his family's death by killing Commodus. The graphics of the film and the graphical recreation of the Colloseum are very realistic. A huge effort has been put in by the creative team behind Gladiator and I would recommend this film to anyone. Although a bit violent, it's a great movie and shows how brutal the duels were in ancient Rome. Russel Crowe is at his best and suits the role a lot. Overall, the film is excellent and a must-see.
Rating: Summary: Historical movie Review: Gladiator, played by Russel Crowe reveal in spectacular way the live of a Roman General (Elius Maximus Decimus Meridius), that lives just at the end of the time of the last Stoic Emperor (Marcus Aurelius). This movie is specialy detailed in the real way of combat, the social clases, the politics, the power and defeat of the Roman Empire. For the people who watch this movie with special attention and are really intrested in some historical facts (even if the argument is not completely true) will find the most grat movie ever made of the Roman Empire. The roles played, the action scenes, the combination between both of them makes this movie one of the jewels of the 7th. art
Rating: Summary: We Who Are About to Snooze Salute You Review: Thus the combatants would have spoken had the Games forced them not to engage in combat mortal but to a much more terrifying fate: to be forced to watch "Gladiator." At over two and a half hours (it only seemed like six and a half), this landmark in cinematic ennui poses only one threat greater than having to watch it: having to watch it again. When Maximus' family is slaughtered in the first 35 minutes, you know that he's not going to be around at the closing credits. And the viewer's mood parallels Maximus' throughout the movie: there's pain all along the way with doom at the payoff. The first twenty minutes of this film earn it its one star. The opening battle scenes are truly thrilling, but only serve to highlight the stupefyingly boring nature of the remaining two hours. If your aim is to overcome a massive case of insomnia, run to see "Gladiator." If entertainment is what you crave, run faster, but run away from this tedious turkey. Forget the Ides of March, beware any day this bomb explodes on the screen.
Rating: Summary: One great movie ... but ... Review: This movies is just great. The acting is super, the sound and grpahics effects makes this movie one of the top. One simple stupid thing I've noticed, is the 'weird' idea of a brother making out with his own sister ! This is simply stupid, and I see no need to add it to this great film.
Rating: Summary: Gladiator Review: I think that this was the movie of the year. I thought the cinematography was outstanding and probable the best that I have ever seen. I would recommend this movie to anyone and every one that can get into and see 'R' rated movies. It is not intended for children and should not been seen by them until ready for a mature flick.
Rating: Summary: Modern Day Spectacle Review: This film reminds me of the huge production films of the 50s and 60s. Similar to Spartacus in scope. This is the best movie I have seen in years. What puts it a notch above is that it doesn't rely so heavily on the special effects to carry it. The effects add to the story instead. The acting is first rate. Crowe should get an Oscar for this one. Richard Harris makes a great king and soldier mentor. Oliver Reed is a very good mentor for his gladiator training. The kings distaste for his son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) is well founded. He wishes his daughter Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) was a son so she could rule, but decides that his general, Maximus, (Crowe) is the answer for his succession. Commodus is everything we love to hate as he does everything and anything to see that he will be the successor. Don't miss this movie, the acting, story, sound, sets, FX, and music are all first rate. If you didn't catch this at the theater you missed an excellent big screen movie. Catch it on DVD when it releases, and if at all possible on a big screen. I'm sure it will lose some of the grandeur on the little screen, but it is a spectacular film on any screen.
Rating: Summary: Hmmmm....havent I seen this before.......? Review: Although this movie was a true stunning piece of work, I couldn't help but notice a few stolen scenes. For example in Saving Private Ryan, When Matt Damond asked Tom Hanks about fond memories about his wife Tom replied with "No, no those are for me". Therefore showing no interest of sharing his memories. A very similar, almost identical scene was apparent in gladiator. And the biggest, most brazen attempt at theft was given to the scene where (in very same context) the food was tested before eaten. Ahem...GodFather ring a bell? I do love this movie, but it "borrowed a lil to much for me. But the most fatal flaw of the movie had to be the ending. We were lured into believing Rome would be stormed by a mass army, and justified all the cruel rulings of the kingdom. Well, all was lost. I think we deserved a spectacular ending. We definitely deserved it.
Rating: Summary: the best movie of the year Review: i really adore RUSSELL CROWE & belive it it's the best best best best movie done for this year ,(take it an advice from me go for it & buy it )you will really like it
Rating: Summary: Gladiator Review: A friend ask me if the movie was bloody - duh its about Gladiators, but I assured him that it was less bloody then say the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The movie itself was predictable but the story was still great! Just think if this really happened! I never heard of Crowe, I'm not much into actors, but he was great! Maximus, (Crowe) was a guy that was quite likable. A man who did his duty to his country (Empire) and the hardships and challenges he had to face were incredible. And his rewards, well you just have to see this movie.... Its rare these days to see a movie without foul language, HollyWood keep movies like these coming!
