Summary: More entertainment than history
Review: Anyone looking for anything with Mel Gibson in it will certainly be satisfied with "The Patriot," but anyone expecting even a semi-accurate look at possibly the most important events in American history better look elsewhere. From the film's outset, Gibson plays his character of farmer-turned militia leader Benjamin Martin with a sense of brooding and always with a voice of reason and logic, until he cries for revenge. The film starts with talk of the pending revolution and Martin's objection to it on moral grounds and not because of loyalty to the crown. But Martin is dragged into the revolution as a reluctant libertarian when oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) defies his father's command to stay at home and leave the fighting to other patriots. Along with fighting, Benjamin is something of a diplomat in negotiating with British Gen. Cornwallis, played with some historic accuracy by Tom Wilkinson ("In the Bedroom"). As a fighting patriot, Benjamin tastes the bitterness of revenge when he vows to take out sinister British Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs in a thoroughly villaneous and worthy performance). As a historical piece, "The Patriot" disappoints, but it may well not have been intended as a period piece. Rather, it renders itself to the impact of revolution and war on the families of their fighting men and on civilian populations. Keeping that in mind, "The Patriot" is a worthy project, and it serves to further bolster Mel Gibson as a talented actor and craftsman of tremendous range.

Summary: A Story of True Patriotism
Review: In this film Mel Gibson plays Benjamin Martin who is a colonist who re-discovers his love for his country through his love for his children. This is a wonderful story of a parent's love, a man's strength, as well as what he feels is his loyalty and duty.

The costumes are perfect and guide the veiwer to another time and place. The cast is masterful at what they do, and the writers have truly made a movie that has brought the story full circle as well as developed a plot making the audience think about the true value of family, and patriotism, and how the two work together. Let us not forget the villans who are vital to any good movie. This movie comes complete and hasn't left them out. They are believable and you truly will hate them as much as you love the good guys. A warning for all of you soft of heart like myself, be prepared to cry. There are a few scenes that will break your heart.

Summary: Masterful epic
Review: This is truly one the best films ever made. I loved every aspect of it and the final battle was not only brilliant, it was based on an actual battle that took place and is known as the "Battle of Cowpens". I highly recommend this film to anyone that has been pining for a truly great film based on the American Revolution. This is a must for Mel Gibson fans.

Summary: The Complexities of Patriotism
Review: Any conflict between nations that involves the escalation of tensions must inevitably force those governments to make the ultimate decision on whether or not to go to war to protect its interests. In "The Patriot," a fictional tale of the American Revolution, the agonizing decisions of our colonists and of their families are illuminated against the backdrop of a pivotal timeframe in our country's maturation.

"The Patriot" does not discount that there were many who were opposed to an armed conflict with the mightily superior and highly organized British army. Indeed, one of the strengths of this movie is that it illustrates how difficult the decision to defend and to extend their notion of freedom and liberty was, knowing that many families would be torn asunder, homes destroyed, and lives sacrificed.

Not to be missed is the performance of Jason Isaacs as Colonel William Tavington, the embodiment of evil incarnate. Played with an antagonistic coldness that is vile, this character is vital to the impact of the story because of his absolute lack of soul and character, answerable to no one or nothing except his own selfish motives. He serves as an example of why a system of checks and balances within any structured government is necessary so that power is not abused.

Mel Gibson's character, Colonel Benjamin Martin, is conflicted on many levels and having seen and served in the French-Indian War, knows of the death and destruction that is ahead should the colonists decide to defend freedom against the British. He also knows that it will change his sons forever and the way that their manhood will be forged through the crucible of war and the emotional toll it will encompass. Colonel Martin votes against going to war initially but is drawn into the conflict and serves with his son, Gabriel, the character who serves as a representative of all those in their youth who romanticize war and who are eager to serve their country.

Should "The Patriot" should be gauged as a success? The answer is yes as it effectively transports the viewer to another time and takes one to another emotional level against the undercurrent of trying to define patriotism as it was to the colonists and to how we would define patriotism today. If at the end of the movie you are reflecting upon the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for future generations in the name of patriotism, then "The Patriot" has succeeded, as it did for me.

Summary: Rousing adventure
Review: Yes, yes, yes...this film is not historically accurate...and how the slaves are treated is laughable (they could have given the black character depth, instead of him just showing up) However, any student of history wanting to see a true historical movie should automatically dismisses Hollywood movies at first sight...all of them. If you want truth, go watch a documentary, which would be far less entertaining.
This movie is purely cinematic...from Mel Gibson's emotional performance to Jason Isaac's kill-anything-opposed-to-us character: really patriotic good guy vs. really cruel and evil bad guy = classic showdown. Besides the action, the movie does manage to touch the emotional conflicts of the period in a truthful way (i.e. Gibson's young sons having to fight, and then taking a semi-pleasure in it).
Personally, I liked the cinematography of the movie the best...from the pre-dawn battles to the old mission in the swamp, it is all visually pleasing, though, it is clear where the digitial effects came in handy.
Overall, if you are willing to dismiss the historical flaws, which most of us do anyways, you will enjoy this movie.

Summary: JASON ISAACS IS THE DEVIL................TO OTHER ACTORS
Review: The movie is the Patriot and my absolute favorite war movie that is specifically about INFANTRY (my favorite war movie is the Czech film Dark Blue World). Mel Gibson gives a memorable performance as a man who loves his family and does what is necassary to protect them and to honor his young country. Tom Wilkinson gives an excellent performance as Lord Cornwallis, and Heath Ledger is excellent as Gabriel........Mel's patriotic son. but I have noticed that the greatest performances in the whole film are from the actors that nobody knows about! WHASSUPPPWITDAT!!!!!!!!...THE NEED TO BE HONORED!!!!!!! For example Chris Cooper gave a backbreaking performace as the Continental Colonal Harry Burlow,,, the guy who played the slave........Hakko who eventually becomes a free man by serving in the Continental Army,,,,,decides to remain with his patriot comrades on his "own accord", and best of all....Jason Isaacs who played the DEVILISH Colonal William Tavington.who in himself was the best actor in the whole film and gave the best performance in the whole film. especially when he mocked Benjamin Martin about killing his son (not because his son is dead but because he does it with such evil intensity,,,it is a joy to watch)...especially when he does that evil grin!!!!!! Another thing I enjoyed was how he did his facial expression when Martin ran the Bayonette into his windpipe............. The bottom line is that it is an enjoyable film,,,(but to the historians out there who think that the film is innaccurate and insults the british.......I know todays audiences will not enjoyingly watch films that are called "Docu dramas"..............o and It really makes me want to see Jason Isaacs play James Bond 007 when Pierce Brosnan vacates the role!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: My favorite worst movie ever
Review: I love this film. Let's run off all the reasons it's one of the worst films ever in the history of film making...

1) The dialogue is worse than 'Titanic', which is nearly impossible. I have no idea who it was that read this script and thought, "What powerful language - let's turn this into a film!" I've written better stuff on bathroom walls.
2) The action is terribly boring, and I likes me my action! I mean, when compared to similar action in "Glory" or "Last of the Mohicans", this stuff is horrible. My favorite shots are the slow motion shots where Mel is the only one in focus. They're gloriously annoying and cliche.
3) Not that I'm a big denigrator of US policy, but where did they get this propagandist tripe?! It's like getting whacked over the head with a 'History' book from the 1890's. I half expected the characters to go on diatribes about 'Injuns'. Yikes.
4) This also might be the longest film ever made. Every time you prayed for it to end, it just kept going.
5) And finally, it did a brilliant job of making the audience cringe at every plot twist. Each time something happened that added to the plot, you could hear an audible groan from the audience.

In conclusion, you should see this film. I could go on about how bad it is, but to be honest, I liked it. I laughed the whole way through, and it has taken over the "Worst Film I've Ever Seen" from Titanic. Then again, if you liked "Titanic", you might just love this.

Summary: Very Good Movie
Review: I love these guys who are banging the movie because it's " not historically accurate". WHO ADVERTISED THIS MOVIE AS BEING BASED ON HISTORICAL FACT??? You people go overboard. This is a FICTIONAL character and a FICTIONAL story. PERIOD. If you want to critique a movie based on fact, watch GLORY, APOLLO 13, The RIGHT STUFF, etc. Those were based on written, documented, fact.....as opposed to the fiction book called "The Patriot".
The movie had excellent cinematography, costumes, and acting. Not an Epic Movie by any means, but it's worth the money to watch
