Summary: The Patriot
Review: Mel Gibson is a wonderful actor. I Really enjoyed this movie. I have watched it 6 times already. A MUST SEE MOVIE!!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: The Patriot ala Braveheart
Review: I fully suspect that if you see this film before you see Braveheart, you'll think this one the better; if you see Braveheart first, that's the one you'll like the best. Mel Gibson is completely convincing as the nearly superhuman minuteman...deadly in the extreme in any close-up fighting.

The filming was excellent...though the fight scenes did not have the ballet-like quality of those in Last of the Mohicans, and therefore left something wanting. The acting was OK; the kids really were the best in many ways.

Good to see once in the theater, and again at home...but I don't know if I'll want to see it a third time.

Summary: It was ok
Review: This movie was ok, but was certainly no blockbuster or 5 star flick. Mel Gibson is a fantastic actor, but got too emotional in this one. His oldest son was annoying and didn't really make me care if he died or not. I also didn't understand how the rebels could even put up a fight. For most of the movie they only had like 8 soldiers. There should have been more action on the battlefields in this move if they werent going to have any characters or dialogue worth watching. Don't get me wrong, it was somewhat entertaining, but shouldnt be on anyones favorite list.

Summary: Presentation 10, Originality 0
Review: "Formulaic" might be the word to describe THE PATRIOT.

All the elements of BRAVEHEART are present. The death of a loved one by an Englishman, the revenge, the capture, the escape, a bit of cunning, a lot of bloodshed and, oh yes, Gibson manages to win the war.

It is sad that the comparison comes so easily, because in it's own right THE PATRIOT is a passable movie; Gibson fans will delight at his usual tough-yet-cute-as-a-baby characterization of the protaganist and action lovers will thrill at the excellent battle scenes.

But the bitter truth remains, THE PATRIOT is little more than a rehash of BRAVEHEART.

Summary: The Best
Review: If you do not mind blood and shooting, then this moive will be one of the best you have ever seen! Mel Gibson plays the main character,Benjamen Martin. You can see how so many Amercan's lost their lives for the cost of freedom. You can see how diffrently they fought then than now. It can be at some parts very emotional. I would very strongly suggest this moive to anybody. It may be long, but it will only seem like a couple of seconds!! It's that good.

Summary: Right on target!
Review: This is most certainly the best war movie ever made. The themes, the story, the scenery, EVERYTHING, is so beautiful. If you truly want to understand what America is about, see this movie! These men gave their homes, their families, their very lives so that we could be free. It is a true masterpeice.

The characters are so moving and the story is so sad. I cried terribly when the British burned the church building, and I hjad to choke back tears in the scene when the militia man finds his dead wife and child. The battle scenes are gut-wrenching and nausiating, but so REAL. This movie has some of everything. Comedy, such as with Cornwallis's dogs and the whole ink-in-the-tea thing. A love story, with Benjamin and Charlotte and of COURSE Gabriel and Anne. Drama and action, which speaks for itself.

This movie truly reveals the American dream. Freedom. I recommend it whole-heartedly.

Summary: VERY GOOD
Review: This is one of the best movies of the year. It takes a lot for a 3 hour movie to keep my attention without running to the bathroom or going for a cig. I am very pleased with my purchas. You will not regret getting this one.

Summary: Overwhelming
Review: This movie struck close to home because i live in Charleston, and know all the landmarks that are presented in this movie. It is 1776 and the colinists of the new world have gone to war with England because of freedom and liberty, but there are sacrifices made by the men who fought in this campaign. Benjamin martin- portrayed by Mel Gidson- was a hero of the famous Wilderness campaign during the brutal French and indian war, and knows about warfare, his son wants to join the Continental army and fight for the pride of his country, but his father is hesistant to let him, and actually the son ends up joining without his father consent. Benjamin Martin ends up leading the South Carolina malitia into battle against the juggernaut army England, the milita, very underestimated, helps turn the tide of the war and the colonists hold out until their friends across the Atlantic, the French, come and help win the war in favor for the new country, America. This movie contains pure movie magic combined with,in my opinion, Mel Gibson's best performance yet to make a heart wrenching and touching story along with the realism of war that so often is lost in war movies.

Summary: Best film of 2000 and very Oscar worthy!
Review: I would like to start off by saying that my favorite movie is not 'The Patriot'. However, it is Steven Spielberg's greatest masterpiece, 'Saving Private Ryan'. I have yet to see a war film better than "SPR", but 'The Patriot' is the closest thing to it.

The plot of the movie is quite simple: The colonies decide to start a rebellion against the British and need a vote to do so. When they ask Benjamin Martion, (Mel Gibson), to sign, he refuses, saying: "This war will not be fought on some distant battle field, but among us." Or something close to it, anyhow. Despite what he says, his oldest son Gabriel, (Heath Ledger), joins the army and goes off to war. Later he returns, only to be wounded. When a British soldier arrives and kills one of Martin's sons, he seeks revenge against the man and vows to kill him. So Martin goes off to war, targeting British commanders.

The film is very realistic and gory, hence the 'R' rating. However, it is nowhere near that of 'Saving Private Ryan', so if you were turned away from that film, give this one a try. Also, if you do not enjoy a lot of swearing, this will be a great film. Although it has a mature theme, 'The Patriot' has less swearing than some 'PG' films I have seen, and that is no lie. It is definitely far below the level of cursing of a 'PG-13' movie nowadays.

I have heard that this film is inaccurate because it does not focus on the war itself, but mainly Martin's sidequest to get rid of Tavington, the man who killed his son Thomas. Do not be concerned by this at all. It may not be as accurate as others in its genre, but certainly has a good story and makes you root for the colonists to succeed. I saw this movie opening day when it was released at theatres and when it was released for rental. It is still the same great film I've seen over, and over, and over...well, you get the picture.

I hope this was helpful for you; I do advise you, the reader, to purchase this DVD at all costs. (But I will not tell those of you who are weary of war to rent before buying. I do not know how offensive it may be to you, therefore I advise a rental to see if you enjoy this film...I sure did.)

If you are a music fan, go over to the popular music section and pick up a copy of the soundtrack. It's almost as good as the movie itself, but not quite. The acting in the film is so excellent that you actually think this was footage from the war itself, but that, of course, is impossible...but they almost getcha! (Also, I do believe this film is made by Roland Emmerich, and in fact, I am sure of it. He is an amazing director who brought us such great films as 'Independence Day' and the lower, not as good 'Godzilla'. This, though, is his best work yet! Great job, but Spielberg--in my mind--still rises above them all.)
