Rating: Summary: A movie that will keep you thinking... Review: Amazing, one of the best movies ever to be done. If you love Fantasy or Mythology (or both) then this is the movie for you to see! the effects are very good, and the story is actually very true and without too many mistakes and twisting of the myth. There are two vers of this movie, one is long, the other shorter, i truely recomend the longer one. -Itay Shahar
Rating: Summary: fantastic film that is worth seeing Review: I saw this movie in February '98, whilst at university. I came home, told my husband all about it and eargerly went out to the stores to try and buy it. No such luck, like Odysseus, I tried hard to get to finish what I had started, but to no avail. It has now been almost a year. My husband has given up as we endlessly search every video shop, every library, and every outlet where it can be bought. We are told it has been withdrawn from Britain, and no other outlet seems to use the P.A.L format. Somebody please help. It is one of the most magnificent films I have ever seen and would go so far as to say that watching it was a life altering experience. If one looks beyond the storyline and the basic plot and begins to understand the more subtle themes, then it truely warrants full exposure. I am a classical studies undergraduate at Keele university, England and watching this film did not only give me personal pleasure, it fulfilled the aim of contributing to my knowledge of this wonderful epic poem. I am convinced this is one of the best interpretations of this poem ever made and I am equally convinced that Homer would have been 'most proud'.
Rating: Summary: This video is adventurous and awesome. Review: I've seen this movie only four times before, but it is a great movie to share with a class or just to watch at home. The adventures it tells about, keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat and makes you want to keep watching until the end. I recomend this movie to people of all ages.
Rating: Summary: It was a great action movie, I watched it in History class. Review: I loved the special FX and the cast was great. Especially Hermes, whoever played him. WOW!
Rating: Summary: adventurous. suspenseful. mythological. Review: The Odyssey was about the greek hero Odysseus' journey home from his victory of the trojan war. He encounters many perils on his voyage. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN FANTASY , THIS IS YOUR MOVIE.
Rating: Summary: I love this movie its a great action packed movie. Review: I loved watching this movie. Armad Assante is great he is the greatest actor for this movie. Vanessa Williams is the best actress in the movie. she is his costar but is the second best in the movie. I give this movie two thumbs up. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes history born in the 90's. Have a fun time watching it.
Rating: Summary: Great Film Review: I'm disappointed that this film only gets a 3 1/2 rating. This is a fantastic depiction of the Odyssey. Armand Assante gives a performance rivaling Mel Gibson in Braveheart. This is a low budget movie, fine, but it simply doesn't matter. The story is to good for the cheap effects to ruin this film.
It doesn't follow the book to the letter, but it is still a tremendous work. This is one of my favorite films, and everytime I watch it I am blown away by the nobility, beauty and strength of this masterpiece. Armand Assante is at his best in this film, he puts on one of the greatest performances ever.
The other actors aren't good at all, the special effects are very bad. Do you know what that means to me? Absolutely nothing, because of the grace and spirit of this film and because of Assante's amazing performance.
Rating: Summary: Destined to be a classic for years to come! Review: The movie was superb. Although it may have not 'totally' followed the story line, I belive it left the story line slightly only to add emphases to make the viewer feel the pain, joy, sorrow that they were to have felt on there journey.
Other then that I do belive this movie did a great job following the story line from the greek classic by Homer, but also at the same time while not only great viewing, but really taught something as well as if reading the book. To know no matter how great one is, there is always one more powerful, even if it is a force unseen. 'to them the gods which Odysseus said he didnt need anymore at first only to be plagued by the cure of Posiden to suffer and never see His beloved home again'.
Well worth watching for entertainment and also educational too. Youll easily find yourself watching this movie a few times.
Armand Assante was a great choice to play Odysseus who plays the part flawlessly, but Vanessa Williams as Calypso... >:)~ *Whistles* enough said on this.
Great movie to treasure =)
Rating: Summary: A good movie Review: Although it did not exactly follow Homer's epic, I think the movie was good, interesting, and fundamentally accurate. The whole idea of Homer's epic is how a mortal man was able to think his way through situations. I think that the movie portrayed this well. Another important element in Homer's epic is the commitment of Odysseus and his wife, Penelope, toward each other. Although it could have been protrayed better, I think this romantic theme is evident throughout the movie. As a historical account of Homer's tale, it could be improved. As a movie, I think it's great!
Rating: Summary: Did the screenwriters even READ the Odyssey? Review: No seriously. Because this movie was almost NOTHING like the original tale. And everything from the original tale they do add is horribly botched.
Let's take the Trojan War. Call me crazy, but I don't think Greek warfare consisted of guys running around madly swinging swords in their loincloths. Or how about the way they portray Hades: in Greek legend it was never fire or brimstone, it was just a dull place. And most of all...the choice between the man-eating serpent and the giant whirlpool is TOTALLY screwed up. The two obstacles block two seperate paths, and Odysseus has to choose one to get through. In the legend he chose the monster, and he does here...but then he bumps into the whirlpool!! What the heck?! OK, stop! Foul! Plothole! Bad continuity! And how about the killing of the suitors, huh? Isn't it a great action scene when a bunch of guys just run around or stand there and let two guys kill them? And how about them jumping back ten feet when they're hit by javelins thrown by some dorky teenager? I guess javelins at close range have the impact of a semi-automatic shotgun.
I have to admit that Homer hasn't aged well. Watching Odysseus cheat on his wife willingly for most of the movie and then expecting us to feel compassion that his wife MIGHT have cheated on him isn't exactly great character development. I know of course it was in the story, but like I said - some things really don't work well nowadays.
Like bad writing.
