Summary: Probably the best of its kind
Review: The action movie really hasn't been improved upon since the release of this picture over 30 years ago. By combining mystery-level plotting with jaw-dropping action (and a sense of humor), Where Eagles Dare far exceeds the Bruckheimer-spawned, multi-million dollar headache-inducers released every summer in our day. As soon as this movie is available again, I'm buying it. Simply terrific.

Review: This film carries the viewer from beginning to end with twists and turns so enthralling, you forget how long the movie is. It is set in Bavaria, World War II and involves a covert rescue mission. Or is it? Who can be trusted? Who is allied with whom? The ending chase scene includes a descent from the "Eagle's Nest"- the Nazi stronghold set high on the cliffs of the Alps, via cable car, no less. The action and intrigue are non-stop and this film highlights Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood as the remaining two operatives in a high-stakes espionage thriller. A must see (especially for Clint fans)...

Summary: An Absolutely phenomenal movie
Review: There are very few movies out there that can combine great acting, intrigue, action and excitement like "Where Eagles Dare" can.
First you have smooth and sauve Richard Burton in a wonderful performance as Major Smith: What are his plans? To whom do his allegiances lie? What exactly is he doing?
You can also ask these questions of the whole movie as the plot thickens soon after Burton, Clint Eastwood and a crew of English commando's descend into the Bavarian Alps to, what the viewer thinks, rescue an important Allied general. Sharp observers will note early on that all is not as it seems.
Thus begins a roller coaster ride of chases, explosions, suspense & thrills.
From a wild fight atop a cable car, to the final "unmasking" of everyone's true identities, there isn't a chance to pause and take a breath.
Although Burton is fantastic, Clint is the real star as he seemingly transports his quiet and deadly "Man With No Name" personna to the film as only he can.This movie has it all.

Summary: Where Eagles Dare
Review: World War II action adventure movie about a British-US commando team on a mission in Bavaria to rescue a captured American Army general before he divulges D-Day invasion plans to Nazi interrogators. Leading the team are Richard Burton, British special agent, and Clint Eastwood, Army Ranger, who must penetrate Nazi Secret Service headquarters and grab the general in an ancient castle on a mountain top in the Bavarian Alps. With conditions already difficult, several commando members mysteriously die after the team's insertion by parachute, and the Nazi SS has apparently been alerted to their presence. The team is soon whittled down to just Burton and Eastwood, but Burton reveals several contigencies he's kept in reserve to continue the mission. There's a lot of action with machine guns and trick explosives, capped off with cliff-hanger thrills as the heroes battle Nazi soldiers in the mountain top castle and on the lofty cable car system that provides the team's only means of escape. The Bavarian location with dramatic mountains covered in snow provide a breath-taking atmosphere, accompanied by the excellent musical score by composer Ron Goodwin. The DVD edition is excellent, image and sound provide the original quality desired by fans who tolerated the VHS edition for years.

Summary: One of the Greatest War Films of All Time !
Review: Quite simply one of the greatest war movies ever made. A top notch thriller loaded with action, espionage and double crosses, "Where Eagles Dare" is the kind of movie that Hollywood just doesn't make anymore. This isn't some politically correct drama steeped in reality. No, this is good guys vs. bad guys. This is pure unabashed fantasy which keeps the audience on the edge of its seat. This is just darn good entertainment! Richard Burton is absolutely cunning as the British agent who leads an elite group of soldiers behind enemy lines and into a seemingly unpenetrable German castle to rescue an imprisoned American General. A young Clint Eastwood is the only American on the mission. Clint is his usual cool and calm self. However he, like the audience, isn't sure who to trust. Somebody's a double agent, but exactly who is anyone's guess. Don't worry about figuring it out, just sit back and enjoy the drama. You'll love the growing tension and suspicion between Burton and Eastwood. The journey into the castle is classic heart-stopping drama. Even better is Burton's fight with a German soldier high atop a ski lift -- truly one of the most riveting action sequences ever filmed. Bullets are flyin' and bombs are blastin' throughout. In the end, heroes emerge while evil perpetrators get their just due. Classic, absolutely classic! And yes, as several reviewers have noted, the stunning scenery and beautiful cinematography in this film would greatly benefit from a widescreen DVD treatment. So, how 'bout it, I want my DVD!

Summary: Second to None!
Review: After watching this movie countless times over the last twenty-five years and having seen practically every movie that has ever been shown about World War II I can honestly say that this is second to none. Burton and Eastwood are at their best. The plot, settings, music, and scenery are second only to the twists and turns that keep you guessing until the last moments. Despite the number of times that I have viewed this movie, it gives me sewaty palms every time I put it in the player. A must see!!!!

Summary: FANTASTIC WW II ACTION FLICK
Review: Where Eaqles Dare is probably only second to The Dirty Dozen as the greatest Action flick about WWII. Like that movie it concerns a daring plot with a group of highly skilled soldiers sent to carry out the mission. led by British officer major Smith (Richard Burton) and American Ranger Lt. Schaffer (Clint Eastwood) the agents seek to rescue a captured American General from a Nazi fortress who has sensitive knowledge of the D-Day invasion.
While obviously an action adventure movie, it's more specifically a `team mission' movie like The Dirty Dozen or a `penetrate the impenetrable fortress' movie. Talk about not making 'em like this any more! There are plenty of fight scenes, chases and Nazi shoot-em-ups. There are the usual stereo-typical Germans, the ruthless Gestapo officer, the stern commander, the visiting General and tons of German soldiers. No problem, ole Clint mows down a whole battalion single handedly. Burton cuts down a company or two himself and both he and Eastwood emerge with nary a scratch.
But hey...this isn't supposed to be a historically accurate film. This is pure, popcorn entertainment with gunfights, fist fights, cliff-hangers (literally) stereotypical nazi villians who can't hit the broad side of the barn and good ol' American and er... British heroes.
The script is entertaining and has a few notable twists in it, a testament to the skill of screenwriter and adventure novelist Alistair MacClain. Character development is not of particular importance in this story and yet one does come away with a palpable sense of Major Smith, a fact that I again acknowledge is the handywork of Burton, whose presence is auspicious regardless of his role.
At three hours it may be a bit overlong but it seems to fly by for the most part. A real classic of the genre and a great precursor to modern day action flicks.

Review: Other reviewers have covered the rest of this film, but let me focus on the music, which I believe is among the best adventure movie scores ever done. It's a simple theme, that builds in intensity and richness throughout the movie. I have seen the movie more than ten times and thrill to the music every time.
