Summary: Burton and Eastwood: Perfect Pair
Review: The situation: A captured US general is held in a German mountainside castle. He is being interrogated about the upcoming D-Day invasion which he knows everything about, and it's only a matter of time before he talks. The response: Parachute 8 commandos disguised as Germans in to get him out...and a whole lot more than that, too. Easier said than done, but not when you have Major Smith (Richard Burton) and Lieutenant Schaffer (Clint Eastwood) to do it. With super intelligent Burton and super killer Eastwood in the lead, you are guarenteed a wild ride. An excellent and propelling musical score, explosive battles, and breath-taking suspence also make this a must see for war fans and action lovers alike.

Summary: One not to miss!
Review: A pretty good "cliffhanger" type adventure romp with the unlikely duo of Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. Full of over the top war action that never lets up. My only complaint is the elimination of the villians with an hour to go, leaving our heroes to make a grand escape attempt against a seemingly endless supply of faceless supernumeraries. A name villian leading the persuit would have been an improvement.

Summary: Where Eagles Dare
Review: World War II action adventure movie about a British commando team on a mission in Bavaria to rescue a captured American Army general before he divulges Allied invasion plans to Nazi interrogators. Leading the team are Richard Burton, British special agent, and Clint Eastwood, an Army Ranger, who must penetrate Nazi Secret Service headquarters to grab the general, located in an ancient castle perched on a mountain top in the Bavarian Alps. With conditions being tough enough as it is, a couple of the commando members mysteriously end up dead after the team's insertion by parachute, and the Nazi SS has apparently been tipped off on their presence, indicating that there is a security leak back at British MI-6 headquarters. Pretty soon the team is whittled down to just Burton and Eastwood, but luckily Burton reveals several tricks he's kept up his sleeve to continue on with the mission, as well as several other tasks that must be accomplished in conjunction with the rescue.

There's a lot of action with machine guns and explosives, capped off with cliff-hanger thrills as the heroes battle Nazi soldiers in the mountain top castle and on the lofty cable car system that provides the team's only means of escape. The fighting is unintentionally humorous as not a single soldier in the entire Nazi garrison can shoot straight or keep their vehicles upright as they're mowed down by Burton and Eastwood with sub-machine guns and trick explosive booby traps. It's more of a comic book adventure and is certainly not intended to be a realistic story that can stand up against historical details. The movie is shortchanged by some poor special effects, but there's plenty of good stunt work to make up for it. Worth noting is the Bavarian location for the film, the backdrop of dramatic mountains covered in snow provide a breath-taking atmosphere, as well as the excellent musical score by composer Ron Goodwin.

The VHS edition plays well, image and sound are of decent quality, though the color appears a bit washed out. If you enjoy this type of feature, you can't help but wish for a restored DVD letterbox edition to fully enjoy the cinematography and soundtrack.

Summary: Classic WWII spy tale
Review: Where Eagles Dare is a classic WWII spy movie. Although it was filmed back in the late 60s, the film is still entertaining today. With two big stars like Richard Burton, and Clint Eastwood, it keeps viewers entertained throughout. The plot is a little far fetched, and the movie takes awhile to get going, but overall it is an enjoyable film.

I recommend this movie to any WWII film fan. I had never seen it and rented it by chance. Glad that I made the choice, and so will you.

Summary: "Action Packed" from Start to Finish - Who Can Be Trusted?
Review: The members of the British Intelligence MI6 are assigned a dangerous mission during World War II - to seek and rescue an American general from the Nazis in an impenetrable castle called the Schloss Adler (Castle of the Eagles), well-named, because "only an Eagle can get into it". Stealth and secrecy must be maintained to gain access to the castle and rescue the general "before the Nazis can make him talk". Major John Smith (Richard Burton) leads a team where no one can be trusted with the exception of an American Army Lieutenant, Morris Schaffer (Clint Eastwood), a skilled assassin handpicked for the mission.

As the mission begins, one member is killed during the air drop over the Alps, and another was found dead in the village below the castle (presumably finished off by double-agents within MI6, as suspected by Smith). Three of them, who happened to be double-agents, are "apprehended" and taken up to the castle as Smith and Schaffer gain access to the castle atop a cable car and helped inside by Mary Ellison (Mary Ure), a reliable and beautiful agent who had worked with Smith in Italy and was picked for the mission in secrecy by only Smith himself. Be prepared to sit at the edge of your seat as Smith and Schaffer attempt to rescue General George Carnaby - actually, Corporal Cartwright Jones - create a diversion to escape the flaming castle and fight off the pursuing Nazis on their way to the Oberhausen air base to be transported out of Germany to safety.

I would have given this movie a five-star rating for its action filled suspense. One problem, however, was that helicopters were not invented until after World War II.

Summary: I've just uncovered a plot to assassinate the Fuhrer...
Review: Make no mistake - and I'll say it in very blatant capitals so there can be no erroneous events on any readers behalf -

THIS IS THE BEST WAR MOVIE EVER MADE.

There. I've said it. Happy? No, of course you're not. You can't be - you haven't bought this movie yet. Instead, like a fool, you've chosen to read this review to find out why I give it five stars. Well, perhaps you're not such a fool after all...

Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. What a combination. The interplay is superb - the two spies/commandoes perfectly trained for the mission, yet shrouded in mystery. In my opinion, the screenplay and plot of this aging (but timeless addition to the halls of movie fame) piece set the industry standard of excellence, which has only - in my opinion - been followed by two other movies since it's release: The Sting, with Robert Shaw, and Free Willy.

So why is it so good? Well, not for the reasons you'd expect, as it happens. This isn't a "little boys of all ages" movie, and nor is it a patriotic tribute to Britain's success in the war, as so many films made this early after the end of WW2 tend to portray (in fact, you actually quite like all the German uniforms, Schmeisers and "Ja Colonel"'s). It is a movie which has aspects that simply "make it good" - they can't be described. The excellent soundtrack, consisting of heavy drum roles and marching music, compliment every second of this perfect-length film. The plot is hideously complicated, but you won't care, because you'll just want to watch it again and again, and eventually the plot comes to you.

Perhaps the reason for this is the almost perfect formula of one third talking scenes/"setting the scene" scenes, one third pure WW2 commando action, and one third classic scenes which cannot be defined into the other two categories.

Daring effects, considering the time it was made, compliment the active plot, which reads roughly as follows:

MI6 has been penetrated by an excellent team of German agents, collaborating with double agents inside the very framework of MI6 itself. Major Smith (Richard Burton), Leuitenant Schaeffer (Clint Eastwood) and six others set off for a Bavarian castle - the Schloss Ardler (The Castle of Eagles - "Called so because only Eagles can reach it"...) - with the intent of staging a rescue of an American general, who is being held there. However, following the parachute drop into one of the most heavily defended areas of the Third Reich's set up, agents start to die at an alarming rate. The traitor has been brought on the team with them! The plot continues, as suspicions fly loose, and agents already in the Bavarian village (who just happen to be two very attractive women) gain access to the fortress itself.

As the plot progresses, we meet an annoying Gestapo officer (Von Hartman), a hard talking Colonel (Kramer), a powerful General (Rosemeir), and a whole team of defective MI6 agents. All these characters eventually culminate in one of the best scenes in movie history, following the infamous cablecar-top ride into the castle itself. As the defective agents and the fortress officers try to squeeze information out of the captured General, Clint and Richard march in on the room and perform some of the cleverest plot-based in any film. The truth outs, making several surprises on the audience, and the team make an action packed escape following machine gun battles inside the Schloss Ardler, a car chase through the Alpine, and an assault at an airfield. Make no mistake, this is cinematic war at its very best.

Still not convinced? (You really do have to see the movie to fully appreciate the brilliance of the screenplay) Well what are you waiting for? Bye the movie and find out for yourself. I assure you - you will always remember the scene where the thoroughly detestable Gestapo officer puts EVERYONE in the room under arrest (including General Rosemeir and Colonel Kramer) and is fooled into getting what he deserves (yes, by this time we are even siding with Colonel Kramer in order to stay against Major Von Hartman of the Gestapo). This is what silver halides were exploited for. Bye it, watch it constantly, repeat sections of the movie at random intervals, and do not EVER tolerate malspeech against it.

Summary: PLEASE PUT THIS MOVIE ON "WIDESCREEN" DVD NOW!!!
Review: This is such a great war movie, and as others have said, it is a shame that this movie has not yet been released on DVD!! And it should be in "EXTRA WIDESCREEN"!!! None of this 1:85/1 ratio or less, that is not much better than watching a full screen picture! I just purchased "The Greatest Story Ever Told" from Amazon.com, and that is on widescreen which is 2:75/1 ratio, and it is FANTASTIC! You get to see the WHOLE PICTURE, not just "pieces". PLEASE release this on DVD! My husband is totally disabled, and is a Marine Veteran, and this is one of his favorite movies, and he keeps asking me to make this request for him, as he may not have much time left to be able to see it on the DVD. THANKS!

Summary: Where is the DVD for this Great Film?
Review: This is a a great classic as evidenced by the film's best seller status after all of these years. Judging by other results, the transfer technology has been nicely perfected. Accordingly, why doesn't the studio get busy and produce the DVD? The scenes would be spectacular in this medium!

Summary: Great Action Movie
Review: Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood star in this action thriller of efforts to free an American General from a German castle high in the Alps. The story also has so many unexpected turns that you won't know who to belive or what's really going on until the very end of the movie. That;s what makes it so good to watch.Directed by Brian G. Hutton. Screenplay by Alistair Maclean.
