Summary: A great War Movie
Review: This movie, filled with drama, action, and a complex plot that will make your head spin, has it all. Richard Burton is dashing as the cold plotting secret agent who is leading his team on a mission to save D-Day from disaster. Clint Eastwood, here little more than a teenager, is wonderful as the somewhat befuddled American army ranger who cannot figure out why he is even on the mission.Any attempt to go into detail about the story would ruin some of the fun. Suffice to say that you will be riveted both by the action and the performances. One note though, Burton's monologue is amazing. If you like WWII movies and have not seen this one, you don't know what you are missing.

Summary: Great movie
Review: Where Eagles Dare has to be one of the most underrated war films ever made. Everything from the uniforms to the location evokes memories and stirs the imagination of all things World War 2. Add the beautiful Mary Ure and you have a winning combination of action and excitement. The uniforms of the Germans as well as the uniforms are authentic, something that a lot of us history buffs are a stickler for. Overall it is a great cast and a great movie.

Summary: Bursting with action
Review: Commando team led by Richard Burton & Clint Eastwood must penetrate a Nazi mountain castle stronghold against impossible odds to rescue a captured Allied general. Thoroughly rousing actionfest, with the typical twisting Alistair MacLean plot. My old video of this movie is almost worn out from repeated viewings. There are several criticisms sometimes leveled at this film which are off-base. First: The Helicopter - helicopters were in development in several forms by Germany during WWII. Operational prototypes of the Flettner Fl-282 Kolibri bear suitable enough resemblance to the helo in the film so as not to strain credulity. Second: Nobody ever reloads - Not true. If one watches the film closely, both Clint and Mary Ure, as well as several of the Germans, are shown putting fresh clips on their burp guns more than once. Third: The commandos accomplish things which are impossible - Perhaps, but anyone who studies the actual exploits of real commandos during WWII will discover that the action depicted in Where Eagles Dare is not as unlikely as one might think. There are, of course, valid nits to pick with this, or any film. Forget them, and enjoy this exciting and action-packed movie.

Summary: Warner announces Sept. 2 release
Review: Warner Home Video has just announced a Sept. 2nd release date for the DVD of "Where Eagles Dare". The DVD will also feature a trailer for the movie and be released as part of their Clint Eastwood collection.
Concerning the movie itself: Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood give solid performances as commando's parachuted behind enemy lines in this movie adapted for the screen by Alistair (Guns of Navarone) McLean, from his own novel.
The scenery is breathtaking and the action steller and after an admittedly slow start the action scenes really pick up in the latter half of the movie as Burton unravels a web of deceit and unmasking of traitors. He must then attampt to escape with his secrets with what would seem like the entire German army in hot pursuit.
Recommended for action fans, Clint Eastwood fans and people who like their Richard Burton dark, brooding and dangerous.

Summary: Nonstop action, this must be the prototype action movie.
Review: This is one of those all time great movies. It should have won several oscars. Such as Best actor, Best story, Best script, and superb music. From the opening scene of the plane in black and white camoflage over the Alps, this movie never lets up. The time frame is World War 2, around 1943. Our heroes have to break into an alpine fortress to rescue an American General, the only way in is a cablecar, or helicopter. From this simple(?) begining all hell is let loose. It then appears that the heroes aren't all hereos. In fact nothing is what it appears to be. I liked the mad dash along the winding, icy road, in the old bus, also the James Bond asides. So very well acted by all (a great number of BBC TV actors here - so you know they are good). Donald Huston, from the original "Blue Lagoon, of course our favourite Clint Eastwood, Richard Burton, Mary Ure, all are first rate. The story makes Tom Clancy's stories seem like nursery tales. You reach a point about 90 minutes in to the movie thinking it's all over, it's not, you have another hour to go, and you're plunged into another series of plot twists. Don't take your eyes off the screen, you will miss something. If you havn't seen this movie try to buy it from Amazon, you will not be disappointed. Another movie from the same author is "The Guns of Navarone", also an excellent story, again with a good cast.

Summary: Yeah, I thought he looked a little nuts!
Review: Richard Burton was in need of hit, as his last several films didn't do great. He had seen The Guns of Navarone and liked the idea. So after talking to the author of the book Alistair MacLean, an idea was developed. Six weeks later MacLean handed Burton a copy of the script he had wrote called. "Where Eagles Dare." Burton stars as (Major Smith)a tough British Commando who leads a group of seven men into a rough mountain area located in the Alpines . Eastwood is (Lt Schaffer) the only American in the bunch. Although the group that lands in the mountains understands what their for (to rescue an American General who knows information about the upcoming D-Day landings) questions are still unanswered. Unkown to anyone except for Major Smith is Mary Elison (Mary Ure) who is there to help in the mission because she has connections with the Germans and SS! As Major Smith and Lt. Schaffer walk to the town around the castle in German uniforms they get a first hand account of what they are really in for. Rescue a American General and then get away. Suicide mission nonetheless, they take it and run. What happens in the first hour is nothing to what takes place in the hour plus that follows. Where the film gets touchy is the scene of the undercover agent. It takes place in a room with Nazi officals as well with Schaffer and Smith. What Elison is really along for during the mission is answered quickly (To get info and bail out Schaffer and Smith if and when they need it.) This is where the action starts and doesn't quite till the end. Some is well done and real, other parts aren't as well done. Filmed at great locations in Europe you can feel how cold and dangerous it was. I won't give away what else happens. It's a classic WWII war film with lots of action, shooting and explosions. Grade: B+

Review: Yes Simon...there were helicopters in WWII. Ever here of the German made Focke-Wulf FW-61 developed in 1936? Awesome movie, with lots of great action and storyline. A must for war movie buffs and Burton fans alike.

Summary: A pretentious bore
Review: This film is awful and is a total waste of Richard Burton's talents, who by this time was sliding down to his AA meetings. The plot is manufactured and absurd as well as being contrite- this is a film about nothing except exploiting a few box office stars on the billing in order to drag into the theatres the short-order cook and truck-driver types who identify with these unrealistic action genres.

Summary: Wonderful Movie!
Review: This picture is one of the best WW war movies ever made. It has excellent action scenes and a great script based on an Alistair Mclean book.Actors and locations are also very well(especially Rrichard Burton's). If what you are looking for, is entertainment with a good story this is your best option.
