Summary: Buy it - 'nuff said
Review: Ok so it walks all over the artherian legends, so some people didn't exist- hey it's TV these things don't need to stick to the facts- If you want a wonderful bit of well-acted escapism then this is the way to go.

Summary: My kids love it!
Review: It was Queen Mab who cast a spell which tore Merlin's love away from him, not Rutger Hauer's character. We love this movie. On Spring Break, I introduced it to my kids: 10, 6 and 2. They all sat through the whole movie, and have requested it 3 times since. We usually have to split it up between two days. This movie has it all. A great family movie without any swearing or sex. Try it out!

Summary: (removed after legal advice)
Review: Let's start by being nice- the direction was inspired in places and the effects above average. Miranda Richardson was wonderfully kinky as Queen Mab.

That's the boring bit done...

After the far-better-than-anyone-expected 'Gulliver's Travels' I expected this to be just as intelligent a retelling of a multi-layered story. Although I am British, I do not automatically believe that American TV is inferior- yet this production would have been improved a hundredfold if (as in 'Gulliver') British Channel Four had been one of the co-producers. In Gulliver, the additions to the story were there to make an artistic point- Gulliver's attemps to justify his story is an allegory of Swift justifying his book in the face of criticism- some of which was put into the mouths of Gulliver's tormentors in England. In Merlin, it appears that the additions are made to appease the grey men of US Networks, who are still convinced that the American people are as stupid and ignorant as they are and continue to insult their intelligence. Martin Short gives an entertaining performance, but it is clear that there was pressure for Mab to have a downtrodden Disneyesque sidekick. I'm sorry to bring up 'Excalibur' again, but when 'Merlin' showed the same set pieces, notably the conception of Arthur, Excalibur won easily. The script ranged from adequate to appalling, which led to the most important reason why it didn't work- I just wasn't convinced by it. If the embellishments had been done with any thought and intelligence, this could have been as definitive a production of the Merlin myth as 'Robin of Sherwood' was of the Robin Hood myth. What we have here is the dictionary definition of 'style over substance.'

Still, credit where it's due, I couldn't misuse $22 million in the same way.

Summary: Magical
Review: If Merlin had ever really existed, this film would be an accurate historical account. The special effects were breathingly, well, magical. Those that missed the broadcast of this film to watch the "titlating" broadcast on that other channel were cheated.

Summary: Excalibur was better!!
Review: This movie relied too much on computer generated special effects. The constant petty bickering between Mab and Merlin took a lot away from the movie too. That's why I prefer "Excalibur" because it was a well-rounded movie.

Summary: Much better than I expected
Review: My wife and I rented this for a mindless change of pace from our usual fare, and we really enjoyed it. It's very clever, with excellent special effects and a superb cast. It would be pretty "dark" for a kiddie movie, so I wouldn't buy it with that in mind.

If you haven't seen it yet or just if you love stories about the days of Excalibur, please check this selection out! It's enchanting, entertaining, romantic, exciting, and endearing!
