Summary: Brosnan & Russo are great!
Review: Although I must admit I was a little disappointed with this film, it still goes down as one of the best "robbery" films I ever saw. I suppose I thought there would be more actual robbery involved, but the "Die Hard" director carefully tries to keep the actual museum scenes more character driven than big action. And it works! He allows Brosnan to actually "act" during the robbery, which is rare in todays action films. What really make the movie however is the on-screen chemistry of Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan. Russo steals the show playing out of typecast as an over the top bounty hunter in the art world. Her prey: Brosnan as a very rich amateur thief who steals not for money, but for fun. Russo's scenes with Dennis Leary as the police detective are also prove her acting abilities, and the fact that this film was incredibly well cast. As long as you don't begin by thinking you're going to see a high-pace action film like 'Entrapment", you'll enjoy this film for the light drama, great acting or fun art-robbery plot that it has.

Summary: Sexy, stylish romp of a movie
Review: Russo and Brosnan heat up the screen in this stylish remake. Using Faye Dunaway from the original to play Crowne's shrink was pure genius. And changing Crowne to an art thief was brilliant. Russo is smart, sexy, and old enough to be a good match for Brosnan's Crowne. And the incidental music is wonderful.

Summary: Fantastic movie; Director commentary on DVD is weak
Review: This loose remake of The Thomas Crown Affair is highly entertaining and has no dull moments. I enjoy a good "robbery flick" and this one is definately in my top 10.Unfortunately, the director's audio commentary track on the DVD is disappointing. There are long periods of silence, few interesting facts, and director John McTiernan concentrates too much on descriptions of only the dolly work in many scenes.

Summary: Good old-fashioned star vehicle, a little slow.
Review: Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo certainly make for a handsome screen couple, but this movie somehow carries something of a dated feel to it. Director John McTiernan, known as a master of pacing and action, shifts to low gear on this one, seemingly at a loss with directing such a polite, almost comedy-of-manners script that's more character-based than set-piece-based. McTiernan's signatures are big, relentless, kinetic sequences where the stakes are always life-or-death. In The Thomas Crown Affair, it's a classic Hollywood tango between man and woman -- not exactly McTiernan's fare. Rene Russo oozes charisma in the lead, but the soapier moments in the script are ill suited to her. And Brosnan's role suffers from not enough screen time in the middle parts, hence not quite enough of an antagonist for Russo. The first 20 minutes of the film clued me in to its inherent pacing problem. Not only do those Romanian/German thieves disappear from the film entirely with no payoff (a no-no in scripting), they take up entirely too much narrative time. And 20 minutes with no protagonist is too loooong! Though there's action going on, much of this section could've been tightened, allowing us to see more of Crown's scheming, and to allow Russo a much earlier, timelier entrance. This one will do well enough for a night of mild entertainment, but pales alongside McTiernan's previous efforts.

Summary: Great Update of a classic
Review: The Thomas Crown Affair is basically yet another new edition of the classic caper flick, in the tradition of Mel Gibson's Payback, The Big Hit, and the seminal Point Break. Don't Worry-its not a shameless. TCF '99 has a decidedly modern look and sound and manages contemporary twists on the old robbery with romance thing. Those familiar with the TCF '68 might be either upset or relieved that the producers of the film don't ressurect the mod pop style and attitude of the Mcqueen/Dunaway original. At any rate, the '99 version is quite entertaining, and the suspense mounts smoothly but predictably. Brosnan looks the part and comes off as a fairly likeable billionaire daredevil, which might be harder than it sounds. Rene Russo is a personal favorite of mine, and she looks gorgeous and turns in a believable performance as as a kind of sexy, high class insurance claims rep. Its great to see her in a good role in the wake Pushing Tin and the last Lethal Weapon. I have to give two thumbs up to whoever is responsible for the wardrobe in TCF 99. It is absolutely fantastic! Brosnan's suits make the rest of us dream of a time where we wouldn't be forced to by off the rack. And incidentaly, for a couple of old farts Russo and Brosnan really steam it up between the sheets! Don't Miss TCF '99....

Summary: Oscar Quality!
Review: I watched this movie on an international flight and when they played it again, I could not help but to go back to watch more. The action sequences were amazingly well coreographed. Russo and Brosnan were both spectacular. The film also had a sound track worthy of its splendor!

Review: Had this movie not been a remake, it might have stood up on its own. but as a remake, it cannot compare to the quality of the original. steve mcqueen plays the character cool and confidant. alone in his own world, the original thomas crown lived care free. he slept with beautiful women, played polo, flew his glider, etc...when he meets faye dunaway...he plays it cool. maintaining constant composure....in this remake, the character thomas crown is weak. he consults a psychiatrist, allows his hired accomplices to get caught, chases after rene russo like he's in high school....in the original, there's not of that. he dictated how he wanted to live and no one was going to push him around. the original is a solid movie founded on steve mcqueen's acting.

Summary: Fluff deluxe
Review: This movie has about as much substance as cotton candy but is yummy nonetheless and better than the original because it doesn't take itself so damn seriously. Also, it features the luscious Rene Russo, who makes 40-something look like something worth growing older for. She really loosens up Brosnan, too. For once he seems interested in something other than his hair. See it with your sweetie!

Summary: This is the worst movie I've ever seen in a theatre.
Review: It was horrible. Easily one of the worst 20 movies I've ever seen, especially considering its budget. The dramatic parts were funnier than they were dramatic. The only plus, if you're into seeing old women naked, is that whenever the film gets so ridiculously horrible you're ready to walk out, the main actress (thankfully I forgot her name) takes off her top and you get some gratuitous(sp) nudity. This movie is horrible. Anyone who rents it, let alone buys it, will feel embarressed afterwards.

Summary: Better with age
Review: Throughout the movie, I was reminded of Mr. Brosnan's performances in the television show 'Remington Steele' and felt that this helped him do such a wonderful job with the characterization of Thomas Crown. Renee Russo was a perfect choice to be the leading lady because of her age not being to out of line with her leading man. You don't have to be young to be beautiful or sexy. In addition, the plot twists left you guessing until the very end. The combination made a big impression on both my husband and myself. It is a definite must have for our video collection.
