Summary: A "Crown" Jewel
Review: Let me say up front: I am distinctly not a fan of movie remakes. Usually, I find them to be tiresome rip-offs of the originals. So, when my wife rented a copy of the 1999 remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair," (the original being that 1968 classic heist film starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway), I found myself predisposed to return it the video store unwatched. That, despite the fact that everything I had previously heard about the movie made it sound pretty good! Reluctantly, I decided to go ahead and sit through it...and am I ever glad I did!Thomas Crown, is a man who has it all. He's a smart, sophisticated Wall Street financier, worth multi-billions of dollars. He owns his own holding company, a New York skyscraper, and a gorgeous town house filled with art treasures. He has everything a man could ask for...except a challenge in life. He's bored. And he's always on the lookout for the ultimate thrill... In order to find that greatest of all thrills, he enlists a little help from a trio of Eastern European accomplices and pulls off a daring daytime theft of a priceless painting from a New York art museum. Enter Catherine Banning, an insurance investigator for "a couple of guys from Zurich who don't want to just write a 100 million dollar check" for the stolen painting. She's just as smart, sophisticated, and savvy as Crown, and equally eager for the next great challenge, the ultimate thrill. She immediately suspects that Crown is the mastermind behind the theft, and she will stop at nothing to get that painting back...including seducing her prime suspect. Soon, Crown and Banning find themselves collision course of sex, suspicion, ambition, jealousy, and betrayal... ...I won't give away any more of the plot. It is sufficient to say that the movie takes many a suspenseful and enjoyable twist and turn on its way to a surprisingly unpredictable outcome. Needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of "The Thomas Crown Affair." In fact, I thought it was as good as the 1968 McQueen/Dunaway version. It is a taut, suspenseful film tinged with humor and wit The acting is good throughout. Renee Russo dominates the film with her splendid performance as the canny and sensual insurance investigator. Pierce Brosnan's portrayal of Thomas Crown is good, but certainly less intense and satisfying than Russo's characterization of Banning. The chemistry between Russo and Brosnan is enhanced by sharp, witty dialogue and the highly sensual scenes shared by these two attractive actors. However, their on-screen chemistry tended to suffer on a few occasions, when Brosnan seemed almost passive next to Russo. Denis Leary was excellent in his role as the highly intelligent and sensitive police detective Mike McCann, as was Faye Dunaway in her cameo appearance as Thomas Crown's therapist. At the end of a Friday evening of movie watching, with the ending credits of 1999's "The Thomas Crown Affair" beginning to roll, I had to admit: my wife had really picked out a very good movie this time! First class entertainment all the way!

Review: Plot: great. Mystery: fantastic. Characters: sexy. Score: lush. One of the smartest, funny movies I've seen in a long time. I've watched this one three times and haven't tired of it. If you haven't rented it, do so, tonight!

Summary: Great tension - physical, mental, and emotional!
Review: It's not often that a sequel is even better than an original, and it's also not often that a battle of wits and romance between two 40+ year olds is considered hot and sexy. For those reasons alone, The Thomas Crown Affair earns five stars. But it's even more than that - the acting is phenomonal and the directing superb. Much like the original 1968 version, there's the jewel thief who robs for the thrill who is hunted by a female insurance detective. To have a female good-guy tracking down a male thief is often role-reversal enough, but to have both incredibly smart, and matching wits as well as skill is quite a hook. This is one of those classic DVDs that I buy as a present for everyone, because it manages to appeal to just about every taste. It also has great rewatchability!

Review: When I finished watching this film in the theater for the first time I wanted to stay right there and watch it again.Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo are great. Dennis Lewry was fantastic as was most of the cast. The soundtrack was interesting and the pace was perfect.

Review: The chemistry between Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan will take your breath away. It is a constant cat and mouse game and with each pasing scene it gets better. I would say this is one of the best "heist" movies I have ever seen. Brosnan is an excellent actor and it especially shows in this movie. I think this is better then anything he has done as James Bond. However, this movie would not be as good as it is if it wasn't for Rene Russo's character. She captivates you. And it is great to see a woman close to the same age as her male conterpart. I hope a sequel is on the way.

Summary: A great film
Review: I found the Thomas Crown Affair "remake" to be a very interesting and clever movie. It held my interest very well, and most of it was just darn clever. I think that most people would find something very enjoyable in the Thomas Crown Affair, whether they consider it a romance/drama or action/theft type movie. After I saw it, I rented the original, which I appriciated but did not like as well. Of course, I have grown up with movies "modern" like the remake, and I was not even alive when the first one came out. Regardless, I can certainly say that nothing is lacking in the remake by comparison, definately a rarity in movies today.

Summary: An unexpected surprise
Review: I saw this movie expecting a cheesy overacted James Bond ripoff. How surprised was I to find a clever, well acted and sexy film. Brosnan and Russo have fantastic chemistry and the story has been updated nicely from the original.Dunaway even makes a cameo appearance as Brosnan's therapist. One of the most clever features of the DVD is its imaginative menu screen which replicates the interior of an art museum. As the camera pans around, the various impressionistic paintings are actually scenes from the film that come to life as the camera moves around them.The DVD also contains the trailers from both the original with Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen as well as the remake.

Summary: A fun, thrilling, romantic movie
Review: The Thomas Crown Affair is an intelligent, romantic and yes, thrilling movie that serves as an adreneline shock to the heart for all those stupified by countless "chick flicks". Those tired of sitting through yet another re-hash of "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle", will welcome this film. It respects the viewer's intelligence as it portrays two individuals with strong, vibrant personalities for whom falling in love is a battle of wills. Pierce Brosnan, as noted in other reviews, has a chance to act in ways that the Bond movies just don't allow. And Rene Russo is a sexy, kick-ass woman who's the epitome of an independent woman. The primary attraction for me in this movie was the attraction of these two individuals, not as sappy lovers, but as equals drawn to each other's strengths, rather an weaknesses. It depicits love as a hypercharged chess game, and it works beautifully. My wife and I thoroughly both enjoyed this movie. I bought it the day after I'd rented it ... and then promptly watched it all over again.

Summary: Feels like "made for TV"
Review: This film has an odd feel. It comes with a very big name star and clearly a significant, if not "Star Wars" sized budget yet the outcome has the feel of a typical made for TV movie just one step up from a glamour soap such as Dallas. The plot loosely follows the original film of which this is a remake. Thomas Crown (Brosnan) has a vast fortune, an interest in the finer things in life and strange ways of getting excitement. He is shown placing huge bets on a single golf stroke and wrecking an expensive racing yacht just for entertainment. When a priceless painting is stolen from a museum, he is an immediate suspect. But why? Clearly he has no need to steal it for the money. Would he want it in order to gloat in a private gallery? Perhaps the theft was staged just for the excitement it would give him? At this point, Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) turns up. She is the cool insurance investigator sent in to help track down the painting. Even if you have not seen the original version of this film you can quickly work out that she and Crown will head for the sack. But why? The whole interaction between the two is played with so little emotion that you wonder if Banning is simply using her body to tempt Crown into an indiscretion and is Crown just playing another risk running game for excitement? Whichever way, the relationship between the two is not at all interesting and indeed, little actually happens to maintain interest in the middle section of the film. The two robberies in the film (one at either end) are really the only eye catching moments and they do not make up for the rest. If the majority of the film is "Dallas" for the big screen, the robberies are pure "A Team" material.

Summary: What a hunk
Review: I have been a fan of Pierce since Remington Steele! Ya all remeber that show? What a pleasure it was to see him in this film - not only is this one terrific movie (stunts, fun, romance, action, mystery, guess work), but I think Pierce steals the show, not Rene (even though she too is terrific, and what I wouldn't do for that little black dress). If anyone reading this is a fan of his, this is an absolute to add to your video collection.
