Summary: Directors cut here folks YIPEEEE
Review: For those that do not know, this current release is a directors cut with almost 30 minutes of NEVER seen material, not in the US release or the European release. It has the Goldsmith score, and I will go out on a limb and say I am not a big fan of it. I think the TD score was much more haunting and gave us an atmosphere of mystery and darkness than JG's did but I'm not going to complain too loudly because we FINALLY get to see a much fuller version of the story than has ever been shown before!

For TD fans there is also the US relelase version in this set with a seperate music track of of TD's haunting and deliciously dark score!!!
So buy it already!!!!

Summary: Love the Devil
Review: "Legend," one of the rare gems from the brief 80's surge in fantasy movies, is all about the Devil. Sure, director Ridley Scott does some decent world-creating. The faeries are dangerous and appealing, as faeries should be. Tom Cruise, as Jack the wild boy, delivers one of the most subdued performances of his career. For some reason, Annabelle Lanyon's brief performance as Oona has always captivated me. (I would have kissed her!) The storyline of Unicorns and true love is simplistic enough not to interfere with the poetry of the images.

Ah, but the Devil. Tim Curry's performance as Darkness is a spectacle to behold. Somewhere in those giant horns and cloven hooves is Dr. Frankfurter. Look for him in the lips and eyes, you'll see him. Mia Sara is lovely as the pure hearted princess, but she is so much more beautiful when tainted by Darkness. The subtle interplay and seduction of these two characters is what makes "Legend" rise above it's station.

Black as midnight, black as pitch, blacker than the foulest witch.

Summary: Pure Visual Delight
Review: A viewer in New Jersey wrote a review that states that the incorrect soundtrack was affixed to the new release. This is untrue. The original soundtrack was penned by Jerry Goldsmith, but the movie tested poorly in the U.S. with this soundtrack so it was replaced with the other version by Tangerine Dream.

This movie is so visually stunning that there has not been one like it since. Fantasy is so hard to capture without being smarmy, and I do believe that it is harmless to have a film that portrays good triumphing over evil, cliche though it may be. If for no other reason, this film is worth viewing for it's intense scenery, costume and atmosphere. The Unicorns are so believeable and mesmerising. You will not be disappointed, faeries, sprites, evil hags, love and goodness and the reverse, evil darkness all make this a very memorable film and a must see for anyone who has ever believed that love can conquer anything if you only have enough faith.

Summary: one of Tom's Cruise first and best movie
Review: legend is about a young fairy boy that has to save the world from darkness. This movie has the best scenery that I have ever seen in a movie. The scenery alone makes this movie good. Plus throw in a romanic storyline and you have one beautiful movie.

Summary: disappointed
Review: ... ...

The DVD does not say whether it is the original European release (... ... Tangerine Dream did the second version of the score..not the first) or the American version. I own both on VHS.

The American version with Tangerine DReam is good, but lacks the logical sequence of events that the European version does.

I had really looked forward to being able to have both version ...

Summary: The legend that started a legend
Review: A great classic movie that featured a then newcommer Tom Cruise. I find that everyone who sees this marvelouse fairy tale loves it from the begining. The special effects are masterfull even for the time and the story is fabulous.

Summary: Some Things Just Shouldn't Be Tampered With
Review: Legend has always been a favorite classic of mine. I recently purchased this DVD in region 2 (Europe) format. Now, if the region 1 (USA, Canada) DVD includes the same revamped movie on it as the region 2 DVD, then fans of this movie should be prepared for some major changes. In my opinion the most dissapointing of the changes was the soundtrack. It has been totally changed. A music group called Tangerine Dream created the original scores, which played a signifigant part in giving the movie it's uniqueness and fantasy-like out-of-body feel. Well, it's been totally edited out, with some more modern movie music thrown in it's place, paling in comparison to the original. I actually felt cheapened as I fist listened to it. It just sounds, for lack of a better word, silly. Other changes include scene changes. For example - when the princess first walks into the hut in the woods, she looks around and examines a clock. In the original movie, she has a strange vision of the future. In this new version, that doesn't happen. Keep in mind that is just a SMALL example of a change.

The only good changes I noticed about this revamped version of Legend was the visual qualities and special effects. All nicely done and edited. If you ask me, visual qualities and special effect enhancements was all this movie needed to be released on DVD.

So, did all this editing ruin the whole Legend experience? To some people, perhaps. Is it better? Not a chance. Is it worse? Well, thats for you to decide.

Bottom line - I think I'll just record my VHS version onto a DVD/R and label it "Do Not Edit"

Summary: The best fantasy movie, hands down
Review: I love this movie, its the coolest fantasy movie ever. I like it better than all the big budget blockbusters, like Willow (2nd best of all time)and Lord of the Rings... The Prince of Darkness aka: Devil in this movie is the best looking Devil ever designed, those huge horns are awesome. I first saw this movie when I was a little kid and I still get the same feeling when I watch it now. Anyone who has ever watched Dark Chrystal as a kid and than as an adult will know what I mean, as a kid its great, as an adult not really.
If anyone collects action figures there are going to be 2 figures released from this movie in McFarlanes next Movie Maniacs line. If you dont have it, buy it,[money] what a steal...

Summary: The best in Fantasy Movies before LOTR : FOTR
Review: I have to say that as far as fantasy movies are concerned this one goes hands down as the best made up until last Christmas's release of Lord of the Rings , The fellowship of the Rings. This early appearance of Tom Cruise as Jack the leaf covered boy brings back such memories of the mid-eighties. I remember memorizing many of the lines uttered by the evil character played by Tim Currey. "Every wolf suffers flees, tis easy enough to scratch!" and I *hated* the fact that the movie had to end. It is pure fantasy and has the magic of reading some of the best books, you don't want to leave the screen. I say this with a history of fantasy, illustration , comic books and sci-fi in my past and current list of interests. This is a great movie. I was very dissapointed at the first delay of the DVD release, but I sure hope the release date on the Amazon home page (at this date) of 2010 is incorrect! I can't wait that long to see this movie and be transported back to the magic land of the living Unicorns. This is a great movie for Fantasy fans and its just acceptable for your mature children to watch as well.

Summary: Visually Entertainting Fantasy
Review: Since Ridley Scott is my favorite director, I decided to review all of his films. This is not my favorite but the visuals did impress me. I'm not totally into fantasy themed movies, so I tried to keep an open mind in viewing this film. The Lord of Darkness is a great character mainly because of his looks - he doesn't look a...thing like the actor portraying him. I fyou're a Tom Cruise fan, this is probably one of his worst acting performances. Yes, he was very young but they probably could have found someone else that could have pulled this off better. Recomendations of Ridley's films: Black Hawk Down, Gladiator & Alien.
