Rating: Summary: The Top Gun of all the airplane flying movies Review: I grew up in the 80's, but I didn't really watch Top Gun until a few years ago. I definitely saw what all the fuss was about when just about everybody mentioned Top Gun as one of their favorite movies of all time. To say the least it's a damn good movie. I couldn't find hardly any flaws in it. My favorite kind of movie is a good action movie with fast paced action and although most people consider Top Gun more of a drama movie, it also has a lot of top notch action and suspense in it as well. Cruise and McGillis do a great job acting and so did all the supporting cast. I can't think of many more sequences in any movie that are more awesome than when Maverick, Iceman, Viper and the rest of the flyers take to the air close to the end of the movie and do their job against their enemies. Top Gun also is great in the drama area. It seems like Cruise and McGillis are in a real relationship throughout the movie. Not to mention that the soundtrack to Top Gun couldn't have possibly been any better for the movie. If you like movies with fast paced action sequences with a little bit of drama added in, then Top Gun is one you can't afford to miss. It's one of the classics and one of the top 3 films of the eighties.
Rating: Summary: Great film, mediocre DVD Review: This is a two-part review. One part on the film, and one part on the DVD: This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. It tells the story of a young fighter pilot and two goals he must accomplish: Being the best fighter pilot in the world, and winning over the love of one of his instructors. As the movie progresses, he learns there are things more important than being number one. I won't say anything more about the film itself (I don't want to spoil it for you) except that it features an excellent cast: Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Tim Robbins, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Rick Rossovich, Michael Ironside, Tom Skerritt, Whip Hubley, Barry Tubb, James Tolkan, Meg Ryan, Clarence Gilyard Jr., and many more. Don't worry if there are a few actors you haven't heard of. Each one executes his or her role with excellence. Be warned though, if you're looking for accuracy to the actual US Navy or Top Gun school, you won't find it here. For example, the movie deals with competition, and in real life, the Top Gun school discourages competition. Likewise, we never hear the name of the country being fought against, and MiG 28's aren't even a real plane (these are just painted F-5' or F-20's.) Accordingly, you need to watch the movie with an open mind. The DVD features excellent picture quality, plus your choice of normal or widescreen viewing. But where the hell are extras?! No interviews with the cast? No comments from the director? No deleted scenes? No listing of the cast's other efforts? They didn't even include trailers for other films or even that Diet Pepsi commercial that was on the original pressing of the VHS! If you like this movie and don't have a copy yet, get the DVD due to the obvious superiorities over VHS. But if you have the VHS version, don't bother getting the DVD. You're really not missing anything. Hopefully in 2006, they'll release a twentieth anniversary edition with the extras they neglected to include here.
Rating: Summary: Hahahahahaha Review: Utterly preposterous storyline. But being an aviation buff, the flying sequences were like porn to me. Some of the finest aerial cinematography I've ever seen. Kelly McGillis is easy on the eyes as well. Tony Scott takes a stupid script and turns it into a success by making it like high school. Which everyone can relate to. Overall a fun movie to watch but people in the know need to really suspend their disbelief.
Rating: Summary: My favorite Tom Cruise picture! Review: Tom Cruise has made a lot of great movies, but "Top Gun" is the best movie he has ever created. Cruise stars Maverick, a fighter pilot, who goes to the Top Gun Naval School with his partner, Goose played wonderfully by Anthony Edwards. He falls in love with a civilian instructor, Charlie played flawlessly by Kelly McGillis. The picture and sound quality from the DVD are good, however there are no extras. I hope that someone will re-release it on the Special or Ultimate Edition with special features including the featurette or documentary, the production photos, the deleted scenes, and the commentary. If you're a Tom Cruise fan, you must buy "Top Gun", if you don't own it. An excellent movie!
Rating: Summary: I Love this Movie Review: I have to admit I love Top Gun. I'm a young man that is considering the military and I was a military kid growing up. This isn't the best or most realistic military movie ever made, but it' one of the funniest. Maverick(Tom Cruise) and his navigator Goose(Anthony Edwards) get the Navy pilots dream, a chance to go to Top Gun. It's at Top Gun that Maverick falls for one of his instructors Charly.(Kelly McGillis)Also at Top Gun Maverick is battling for the honor of top pilot against IceMan(Val Kilmer) Will Maverick stop being so cocky and fly like to his potential. Will he keep the girl? You'll just have to watch the movie. Tom Cruise is fantastic. He does an awesome job playing Maverick. I've had the chance to spend a lot of time around pilots, and so many are like his character. This movie reminds me a lot of being with my dad on the base. Pilots are full of so much b.s. and are such hot shots. Cruise displays it on screen perfectly. Anthony Edwards is great also. Goose is one of my all-time favorite movie characters. He's so loveable and goofy. A lot of pilots and navigators are like him too. I hate what happens to him in the movie, and I must admit it is hard to fight the tears. Kelly McGillis is hot. She is beautiful in the movie. Her carear would have been so much better if she had kept herself looking the way she did in this movie. I like'd her charcter Charly. She does a good job. I liked Val Kilmer. He plays the nemisis pilot great. He plays the macho b.s. pilot hotshot well. His charcter is a little more believable than Cruise's, but not nearly as fun. It's one of Val's better movies. Top Gun is a fantastic movie. I've never met anyone that didn't like it. It's got an all-star cast, great comedey, great one liners, a fantastic soundtrack, action, romance, and much more. A great family film. A great guy film. Some people have even called it a chick flick before. You'll have fun with Top Gun.

Rating: Summary: Exciting, fun entertainment - A blast! Review: I have read quite a few poor reviews from this movie from people who are unable to occasionally shut off their brains and just enjoy an exciting action/adventure with some element of love story. "Top Gun" is one of my favorite 80's films. Director Tony Scott is a genius, and it appears to run in the family (his brother is Ridley Scott of Blade Runner fame). Stunning aerial sequences, amazing cinematography, a rocking musical score and good acting combine to make this a fun, exciting film -- as long as you don't try to analyze it. Yes, the plot is simple and predictable, yes there are numerous goofs and continuity errors in the film (you won't notice if you're not looking for these). Huge at the box office in the 80's (I was there!), this is the film that made Tom Cruise's career. If you see this, I recommend seeing it on DVD with a large screen and good sound system, as it will blow your socks off. On a regular TV screen with poor speakers, this film loses alot of impact. Bring a date :-).
Rating: Summary: 13 Year Later, Top Gun Still Cool Review: Top Gun is the movie that defines what cool is. Even today, 13 years after its release, my football team would sing "You've lost that lovin' feeling" on the bus ride home after a win. Some people may find fault with the contrived plot and overall tone that war is good, but this film was never about plot or social messages. It is simply a film made by a director (Tony Scott) and producers (Simpson and Bruckheimer) who know how to seal the deal. This along with the fact that the cast includes some of the top movie stars of the past 2 decades (Tim Robbins, Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, Anthony Edwards) who were all but unknown at the time. There is nothing better than to pop Top Gun into the VCR, crank up the surround sound and take a trip to the bars and runways of Fightertown USA.
Rating: Summary: A NAVY RECRUITING FILM Review: "Top Gun", starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in 1986, was a glamorous showcase film for the Navy. Actual Navy recruiters set up shop in theatre lobbies, signing up young hopefuls filled with visions of drinking beer while singing "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", making afternoon delight with Kelly McGillis, while tear-assing through the skies like a bat out off freedom. Rating: Summary: One of the classics of the 80's Review: good soundtrack, awesome actors, classic lines, exciting flying sequences and just all-round fun makes "Top Gun" one the true classics of the 80's movie era. In the time of Terminator, Rocky, and the other greats, "Top Gun" is another one of that category. Just a good 'ol fun 2 hours - a good way (escpecially in today's stance) to let loose, laugh, cry and wonder. a great film. :)
