Rating: Summary: Refreshing spirituality permeates the entire film Review: I thought this account of the Count of Monte Cristo to be the best screen version of Alexander Dumas' book. It was wonderfully written and portrayed by the lead character. I truly appreciated the strong spiritual strength of the lead characters, evidenced by Edmond as he year after year deepens the writings on his prison wall with a sharp piece of rock. The writings are "God will bring me justice." The suffering Edmond endures only brings him closer to God. He soon realizes vengeance is not the answer and he reaffirms his faith in God and promises to use the money for good.
Rating: Summary: Excellent movie!!! Go watch it!!! Review: Just watched a screening of Count of Monte Cristo and I thought it was an excellent movie! It had all the ingredients--suspense, action and romance! The acting was quite good too, especially Jim Caviezel, who played the Count of Monte Cristo. It was very entertaining at all levels. I actually felt that I would pay to watch the movie again at the theatres. It was fast paced and not slow going at all.Jim Caviezel was just excellent in the role of Edmond Dantes (Count of Monte Cristo). I myself could not image another person playing him. Guy Pearce was a formidable villian. Henry Caville was excellent as the son of Fernand, Albert, as was Dagmara Dominiczyk, who played Mercedes, the finance of Dantes. The scenary was breathtaking and Caviezel's grand entrance was one of the best parts of the movie, next to his days at the Chateau d'If. Go watch this movie!!!!!!! Then, read the book after, even though there will be differences, the movie holds on its own, as will the novel.
Rating: Summary: Good entertainment!!! Review: Director Kevin Reynolds keeps you pleasantly entertained with light humor in the classic story of the Count of Monte Cristo. I look forward to seeing this movie again.
Rating: Summary: A Classic Returns to the Big Screen Review: Dumas' classic tale returns in another retelling of this enjoyable adventure. Guy Pierce and James Caveizel did well with their portrayal of the friends torn apart by jealousy. Overall, I would say that this was a most entertaining film and definately worth a look.
Rating: Summary: Great Movies Return to the Screen ! Review: WONDERFUL MOVIE! Went to the Premier here in Santa Barbara, California last night. Good Guys, Bad Guys, Beautiful People, Fabulous Costumes, Swordplay, GREAT STORY! I do not like frenetic action movies, this was well paced and interesting throughout. Totally entertaining from beginning to end. I recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: Good Time !!!!!! Review: Count of M. was a good time for me and my guest. The photography and settings both inside and out are exactly what I believe a picture of this genre should be. the story line was romantic and kept your interest. I do feel that the prison scenes were longer than necessary the point had been made and so the plot should have moved a little faster. The actors, though not name performers, were excellent and did have screen charisma. I expecially enjoyed the splendor of the Count's introduction to the people in Paris this alone was worth seeing the film for. All in all it was a lot of fun.
Rating: Summary: An Enjoyable 2 Hours Review: I didn't expect to like this movie. I expected major fencing and swash-buckling, but I found a good mix of action, drama, humor, and pathos. (I had to close my eyes only once.) Richard Harris is wonderful. The other cast members are good at their roles too. I recommend this to people who like fencing and swash-buckling and those who don't. It's enjoyable on many levels.
Rating: Summary: The Count of Monte Cristo Review: I was lucky enough to be given passes for the advanced screening of this movie. It was incredible! I enjoyed it a lot. Very suspensful. It had action, drama and at the right times it was funny. The scenery was beautiful as well as the costumes. James Caviezel was great as was Guy pierce. I would definetley recomend this movie.
Rating: Summary: The Count of Monte Cristo Hits the Jackpot Review: Good balance, good pacing, gripping yet humorous. I was thoroughly entertained. I love it. This is what movies should be all about.
Rating: Summary: Ain't payback a- well, you know... Review: Wow, it looks like I'm not the ONLY one who managed to grab a sneak preview of this movie! Fortunately, I got to see this flick for free. And I snuck in my own concessions, too! After all, you don't think I'm gonna actually pay the theater twice as much for a box of Milk Duds as I would if I hit the Seven-Eleven across the street, do you? Hell, no! So I just put on that jacket that has those deep inside pockets, and load up on the finger grub! Heck, there's even room for a big-slam soda in there! And let's not forget-- hey wait a minute, I'm gettin' off the track here. Where was I...? Oh, yes, I'm reviewing the new 'Count of Monte Cristo' movie. Anyway, here's my two cents... I've always been a big fan of literature and/or movies about people getting back at those who'd done 'em wrong. You know, the "revenge is a dish best served cold" and all that (and no, that is NOT a Klingon proverb, despite what some of you Trekkies out there have been led to believe!). And let's face it, what classic tale of vengeance is more notable than 'The Count of Monte Cristo'? Well, perhaps that one episode of 'MacGyver'. You know, the one where he fashions a smoke bomb out of his tennis shoes and a swatch of cotton from his t-shirt? Remember that one? Whoops, I'm doin' it again. Time to get back to the subject at hand. The movie does diverge significantly from the original novel, which is to be expected. After all, there's no possible way one could fit such a long-running tome into a two-hour space without some liberties being taken! And besides, I find it an enjoyable diversion picking out the differences between the original literature and its film adaptation. For me, looking for the changes is all part of the fun! And there's quite a few diffs here. I won't go into 'em, however; you're gonna hafta find out on your own! The movie is somewhat formulaic, borrowing a good deal of the style and look from other swashbuckling adventures of yore. You know, a little Errol Flynn, a dash of 'Cyrano DeBergerac'-style wit, and a nice touch of somewhat-sappy and ever-so-slightly risque romance. There's some violence, but none of it is too gratuitous. A couple of guys getting run through with foils and a few others cut down with single-shot flintlock pistols is about the worst of it, and even then very little blood is shown. There's also some wonderful moments of humor, especially during our dear counts' moments of vengeance-wreaking. His last words to de Villefort as he's being hauled off to the clink is a priceless moment, and had the whole theater laughing and cheering. And a few light scenes between him and his pirate buddy/man-servant Jacopo also had nice touches of humor to them. Even though most of the actors aren't all that well-known (except for Richard Harris, fresh off of his 'Harry Potter' gig, playing Dantes' cell neighbor / tutor here), most of them- especially the leads, Dantes/Monte Cristo (James Caviezel) and his former friend Mondego (Guy Pearce)- manage to play their parts quite well. You start to feel for Dantes as he endures his thirteen years in the dungeon, and feel the anger as he begins to lay down his blueprints for revenge. And Mondego develops into the kinda jealous, smug, and insufferable cur that one just loves to hate. And as one might expect, our two antagonists square off to the death in the climactic final confrontation! Who will prevail, you ask? Well, you're just gonna have to see for yourself... 'Late
