Summary: Pan & Scan... Forget it!!!
Review: I've been itching to buy this movie since I saw it in the theatre. Now I'm going to have to wait until they release a widescreen version because there's no way I'm paying for pan&scan.

A beautifully crafted film both in visuals and acting, not to mention the masterful story telling. The only letdown is not having widescreen, which is unforgivable and therefore this DVD release gets one star, for what would otherwise be a five star rating.

Summary: Excellent Book-to-Movie!
Review: Maybe you hated it when they made you read The Count of Monte Cristo in junior high -- I know I did.

Then I read it again as an adult, and found it a fine, fun book, filled with adventure, romance, morals, and sweet, sweet revenge.

Then I heard they made a movie, and I winced. How could they possibly fit all that good stuff into a two-hour summer spectacle? Well, they did.

A good guy (Frequency's James Caviezel) who's really good. A bad guy (LA Confidential's Guy Pearce) you'll love to hate. A lovely love interest (Rock Star's Dagmara Dominczyk) who will have you panting.

Oh, and a fun turn by Richard Harris as an aged jail-breaker.

Beautiful locations, an epic sweep, and a few sword fights so fast and furious you'll wonder how they didn't really kill each other.

Great flick.

Summary: A Good Film-But Not the True "Count"
Review: "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas is one of the great adventure novels of all time, and one would think that it would be the perfect story for an adventure/supense/period film. Indeed, Kevin Reynold's version is the latest in a long line (the Hallmark televised version may be the best). Sadly, none of them have done the written work justice. True, the novel is a complex and detailed work that would require a rather special treatment on the screen. Reynold's version is a good movie, but honestly it is not "The Count of Monte Cristo." Far too much dramatic license has been taken here in changing the story, the characters and the ending. Significant characters were left out, parts of the story are not even aluded to, and some things were added to create a "hollywood" ending (no, the book ends much differently than this film...and it is far more satisfying). This film is nicely photographed and produced and is largely well acted (except for the portrayl of Napoleon which does not work...oddly enough Napoleon is never actually "seen" in the novel, he is always off-stage, so to speak). Enjoy this film for what it is, then treat yourself and pick up a copy of the novel.

Summary: Don't rent, go ahead and buy
Review: To think that watching this movie was actually my friend's one condition on driving to see Blade 2 again at the 50 cent theater. This movie gets you so caught up in the story that you miss a lot of little details, making the movie even better the second and third times. The cast is phenominal, with Guy Pierce making up for having done the Time Machine, and Caviezel turning in a flawless performance.

The best thing is, it leaves nothing left undone. A good portion of movies leave you kind of remembering an earlier character who's destiny is never explained. This movie shows you a bunch of different characters and gives a sort of closure to them all before the end.

If there was a sixth star to be given, it still would deserve more. Great movie.

Summary: Monte Cristo = Muy Bien
Review: The Count of Monte Cristo is a fabulous film that was directed and acted to perfection. It is truly deserving of the word "stunning." James Caviezel's part as Edmund Dantes will be one you won't soon forget, and you'll be in awe as the story unfolds. The Count of Monte Cristo will quickly become one of your favorites and one you'll be proud to claim as your own.

Summary: A phenomenal film for sure!
Review: From betrayel to isolation, from redemption to revenge, this powerful film climbs to the top of my list! Due to the four attempts in theaters prior under the same title I feel this particular presentation of the movie was overlooked and should most definately be re-examined by critics across America! Director Kevin Reynolds should be recognized for transitioning a classic novel wriiten by Alexander Dumas into an action packed adventure on the big screen! All I can say is: "go see it, don't flee it!"

Summary: One of My Year's Favorite Movies
Review: We saw this Movie while crossing the Atlantic on the way to London. We loved it!!! When I got home I immediately tried to find out where I could obtain a copy and finally had to e-mail the studio and was so disappointed to find out it wasn't coming out until September. I am waiting and waiting and hopefully September 10th will hurry. A friend of our's recently came down to borrow some DVD's and asked if we had this one, when I told her that it didn't come out until September she was disappointed as she said it was one of her all-time favorite movies. She is looking forward to September 10th too.

Summary: Amazing!
Review: This movie was truly amazing! Jim Caviezel was excellent as the count, and you loved to hate Guy Pearce as his friend-gone-enemy.
The cenimatography was beautiful, and while it was long, you love every minute of it. There are some well done action sequences (with quickened framework that adds to the tension) and the adaptation from the novel (while forced to leave a lot out, obviously...the book is insanely long!)is far better than most works of this sort. It maintains a more comic-book approach to violence and gore (the same as Mask Of Zorro, in that they leave a lot of blood and guts out, so if you're looking for shredded bodies go elsewhere) and it's well worth your while!

Summary: Literature comes to life
Review: There is simply no other word to describe the newest visual version of this great classic but Magnificent! The Count has always been one of my favorite literary characters and he is brought to life -- a true storybook treatment of the original novel. The scenery, sets, direction, cinematography and every other aspect of this film are beyond comparison with any other movie my husband and I have seen in the past several years.
The movie sweeps the viewer away from the very first moments, incorporating historical characters and events into a story which develops and broadens as the movie progresses. On the night I saw this film (my birthday -- my choice), I had received a painful shot to ease torn muscle pain in my arm. My husband and I really debated whether we wanted to go out at all simply because I wasn't in the mood to do anything. But I had so wanted to see this movie since I first saw the previews that I decided to brave it (we already had a sitter lined up too). By the time the movie was 15 minutes in, I had forgotten the pain, relaxed back in my seat and was totally enthralled.
We are very picky about the movies we go to see and have not been overly impressed of late with the selections available. We would usually rather stay home and watch one of our 2000+ VHS tapes or growing collection of DVDs. This film was so incredible, we went back 11 days later and saw it again (something we never do except occasionally with Star Trek movies). I recommend this movie for anyone who likes romance, action, adventure, period pieces and tremendous storytelling.
