Summary: Spider Man
Review: Our entire family enjoyed this movie. However, the love scene is a bit dry, and the relationships between all the characters are simply a bit sad in many cases. Some of the characters, especially Spider Man's love interest and best friend, are a bit shallow - and some of the scenes seem to attempt to prove otherwise, when the characters actions speak much louder.On a more positive note, I felt the reason for the characters transformation into Spiderman were quite interesting, the main character was enjoyable to watch as he grew with his new responsibilities. The special effects were very good, not working so hard on realistic, but instead gave the old comic book feel. Though I did enjoy the movie, I felt there was simply too much left unexplored. I believe it could have been so much better, but not bad for a one time viewing. I would recommend renting it, not purchasing it.

Summary: SPIDERMAN
Review: How is a grownup to respond to silliness of sci-fi these days? Tune out of this review if there is nothing that can stop you from suspending your disbelief in today's computer generated action. Isn't this new technology supposed to make action sequences better? I LOVE great action. I WANT them to utilize the technology in a fun and exiting way. But if you have half a brain, then the childish, insulting special effects of this and many other recent movies has to depress you-it has to leave you wondering if you're just too old to enjoy this genre any more. ROT!! I'm not too old, this movie is bad. Granted, directors are up against the studios demands that every new blockbuster be more radical than the last, more DARING, more -- well, you know what I mean. What is the result of this philosophy? Obviously, it's a law of diminishing returns, in which we get increasingly more dynamic use of CG technology, and less and less useful substance, less and less responsibility for showing us something that we can sink our teeth into. Once the director establishes his lack of respect for the audience, he can proceed with the story with this caveat: any action sequence is valid. If we know they distort reality in the silly action sequences, we also now know that the story, characters, theme, plot, are all suspect. MAKE ME BELIEVE! That's the director's job. Spiderman is a major disappointement. If you are over 16 years of age....

Review: Although I am a fan of Spiderman this movie did not do any justice to the Spiderman series. Lines were cheesy and they could have done a better job on picking out a better actor for Spiderman. Tobey Mcguire just was not a good Peter Parker/Spiderman. Don't waste your money on buying this movie, it's too corny.

Review: This is what a "Special Edition" should be! I've enjoyed this entire set! Lots of fantastic extras, the inclusion of Stan Lee's Monsters, etc was especially appreciated. Should set the standard for gift sets.

Summary: a review of Spider-Man Limited Edition Collector's Gift Set
Review: First of all, this isn't a review of the Spider-Man movie or dvd. It's a review of the box set: Spider-Man Limited Eidtion DVD Collector's Gift Set. (I'll do a review of the Spider-Man dvd at a later time) It contains two dvds: 1) the Spider-Man widescreen special edition, and while I'm not going to go into it in this review, it is a great movie and a great dvd; and 2) Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters & Marvels, which I've reviewed under the dvd, so I won't go much into this dvd here. But it is a very informative interview. These two dvds pretty much make the gift set worth the price. It also comes with a few 'collector's items' which I leave to you to decide if they make it worth picking up the gift set or just buying the dvds. There's a reproduction of the Amazing Fantasy comic that first introduced Spider-Man. It's monetary value is null, since it is a reproduction, but it is nice to get a copy of our favorite web-slinger's first appearance. A bit juvenile, but valueable for the Spidey-fan. There's a piece of artwork by John Romita Sr, nice but doesn't add much to the set. And finally there is a film cell from the movie (when Spider-Man is dodging Goblin's bats in the burning building). Also nice to have, but I found these collector's items don't add much to the enjoyment of the dvds. I'd say the gift set is only valuable to the hard core fan. Otherwise, just pick up the dvds.

Review: Without a doubt one of the best comic book movies ever! Tobey Maguire did a fine job as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst's performance was excellent. I cant wait for the next ones to come out.

Summary: A more than solid superhero blockbuster
Review: When going into adapting a comic to film, there are usually two routes. The first route is the movie will be utterly disappointing and lacking any of the intensity from the book it is adapted from (see the Spawn live action film for example), while the second route is a riveting, very well put together film that carries the essence of the comic (the original Superman and Batman and the Blade series). Spider-Man isn't the best comic adaption to film, but this long awaited movie more than delivers the goods. Tobey Maguire is rather good and believeable as Peter Parker and Spider-Man and seems to be a great choice for the role in the future films, while Kirsten Dunst is as stunning as ever as Mary Jane Watson. James Franco perfectly captures the personality and insecurity of Harry Osborne, while Cliff Robertson and Rosemary Harris are very good as well as Uncle Ben and Aunt May. But the best casting and performance goes to Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin/Norman Osborne, he is absolutely perfect as the maniacal schizo and is clearly having a lot of fun in his role, while an almost as perfect performance by J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, who is perfectly cast and looks just like the character does in the comic. Director Sam Raimi (director of the cult classics Evil Dead Trilogy and the original Darkman) directs with his usual stylish flair (along with some shameless corporate promotions) and is a great example of how to make a comic adapted film with a director who knows the comic... All in all, Spider-Man may not be up there with the original Superman, Batman, and Blade, but it is more than worth a look...

Summary: One of the best comic book orientated movies ever made
Review: Yet another comic book hero makes it to the big screen. Several years back there was talk of James Cameron directing a feature based on the SPIDER-MAN comic after all the hype of his megabudget pukefest TITANIC. Finally this year the movie was made flesh under the direction of Sam "Evil Dead" Raimi, who is no stranger to comic book territory having directed DARKMAN.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw SPIDER-MAN. Apparently this is loyal to the comic book (I've only owned 2 SPIDER-MAN comics in my lifetime), but what you get is so much more than a live action graphic novel.
Tobey MacGuire is perfectly cast as the nebbish high school student Peter Parker who is bitten by a radioactive spider and as a result inherits spider- like powers which he finds he has to use to save his city from the wrath of the menacing Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe, in another effectively slimy performance)-whose secret identity happens to be that of one the man at the local paper he works for, which also assigns him the Spider-Man story.
And of course there's the foundations laid for Parker's relationshop with MJ (Kirsten Dunst). Excellent visual effects and a story in which the characters are given a chance to develop without compromising on the expected stunt seqences make SPIDER-MAN one of the best comic book adaptations ever made. Plus you get to see Dunst in a wet t-shirt. Huh huh huh.

Summary: Bad Acting, Bad fx, Bad Love Story, Bad Pace!
Review: I used to love reading Spider-Man comic books, and was excited when I heard about a movie version of the classic super-hero. Unfortunately, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man is just plain bad. It's boring! The story moves at a snails pace and the action scenes are way too short. That wouldn't be SO bad if the plot were interesting or the love scenes half-way decent, but they're not. This movie won't stand the test of time, that's for sure.
