Summary: Easy but useless
Review: I took an web page design class and we used this program, and its very easy to use, but if you want to make a website that actually MAKES a difference, I suggest using Marcomedia and teaching yourself how to do flash. I wouldn`t waste my money on some program that you can`t do much with.

Summary: Frontpage is Not for you!
Review: Frontpage is for people who don't know the difference between a click and a right click. First off I would like to say I am NOT anti-microsoft, I use many of there software Apps and OS's. I do not however use this product because it smiply is a horrible tool for any professional web designer. Basicly it comes down to what you are trying to do. If you are trying make your first webpage and you really think that animated GIF's, tiled backgrounds and looping midi songs are great, THEN BUY FRONTPAGE. For everyone else BUY DREAMWEAVER! The difference in price should not be a object, as far as I am concerned the extra $20 spent on dreamweaver is a investment that will save you time and money in the future. If you ever have to edit your code you will know what I mean. I know that dreamweaver's interface isn't as recognizable as frontpage, but the learning curve is NOT high. Buy the Visual Quickstart book on Dreamweaver and you will be ready to do professional webpages in no time.

I am a full-time webmaster for a North Carolina Chamber of Commerce and I have a two-year degree in Internet Technologies.

Summary: Extremely Bland Themes
Review: As a novice user, I was able to start using Frontpage 2002 the first day, but was very very disappointed in the Themes available to choose from for my small business web site. They are very very bland, unimaginative themes. Microsoft needs to add some good artists to the staff and listen to them. I am going to sell Frontpage and will use Homestead.com instead, which is slower and has a lot fewer features, but the Website Themes and Templates to choose from are much much more attractive. Homestead is also easier to learn. Frontpage is a lot better in one respect though, you can insert an entire Word document, tables, plots, graphics and all, very quickly (one click) and it all looked good except the photos. So if you are adding a great deal of Microsoft Office non-text material to your site, Frontpage speeds things up a lot there.

Summary: Beginners Web Site & Web Page Software
Review: Microsoft Frontpage 2002 is an ideal software package for the beginning web page & web site creator. Unlike most Web page software, Microsoft allows the user to create web pages and web sites by using wizards in lieu of having to actually know HTML. Just type text, insert photos and Frontpage does the rest. Upload to the WWW web site and a way one goes. However, for the complex web site or web page creator, Frontpage is lacking in high level HTML coding and web site contruction. Dreamweaver with Macromedia Flash would be the prefered software package.

Summary: Don't buy this program.
Review: This program is the industry standard of what NOT TO DO. If you are not a web designer and just want to make a website there are better free programs out there than FrontPage and if you are planning on making websites for money I recomend Dreamweaver or the Dreamweaver Studio that comes with Fireworks also. FrontPage is to limiting and gave me nothing but trouble setting up sites. Run as far away from this product as you can and tell all your friends to do the same.

Summary: Avoid it like the plague.
Review: If you're at all acquainted with web design, then you probably know everything you need to about FrontPage: it writes non-compliant code; it has a horrible interface; and is generally unintuitive and non-industry standard. In short, it's ugly and doesn't play well with others.

If you are new to web design, read the above and then avoid FrontPage like the plague.

Want to get started building web pages with little knowledge of HTML? Use what the pros use -- buy Macromedia's "DreamWeaver" or Adobe's "GoLive". You'll be SOOOOO glad you did.

Summary: Only appropriate for a very limited audience
Review: FrontPage 2002 is a reasonable product if you must get a website up and running and you have no experience with HTML coding. Even then, it's not for you if you want to make sure that everyone on the internet can view your site. So, the best audience for this product is a person with limited coding skills that can guarantee that their page will be viewed by Internet Explorer users.

There are far better products for people that want to create awesome websites without coding. One caveat: your best bet will always be to have control over the code. No matter what, that implies a learning curve. However, short of that, there are three excellent products that should defintely be used before FrontPage: If you want "sky's the limit" functionality and incredible integration with an established development suite, Macromedia Dreamweaver is the way to go, followed only by a hair by Adobe GoLive. Actually, I guess it's hard to say which is better-- a number of extremely competent professionals rate GoLive higher than Dreamweaver. A third excellent product for the entry-level user is NetObjects Fusion 7.0, recently acquired by Website Pros. This is an easy-to-learn tool that creates great websites. It can usually be had for about 30% less than FrontPage and is a far superior product.

Unfortunately, the only thing that recommends FrontPage is that it is a part of Office. If for some reason that is absolutely critical, then I guess Microsoft has you where they want you. Otherwise, go elsewhere.

Summary: For the beginner or deploying sites quickly!!!
Review: Honestly, I'm not interested in learning HTML, and I wanted to create a simple website for my Youth Group and like I said I did not want learn any web programming. So what was I going to do? I always had FrontPage on my computer since Office 2000. I always heard rumors that FrontPage was not an appropriate choice for web creation and management. Yes and No in some respects, if you really want to create a professional website with all the bells and whistles for coporate purposes or some other professional type of reason go ahead and purchase Adobe GOLIVE or DREAMWAEVER. For those who are creating simple websites either for non-profit (like me) or just a personal website I honestly think FrontPage is most suitable, easy to learn and use, no need to learn code, it has templates to get you started right away. One major dis-advantage is the code FrontPage produces is very slow, but it get's the job done at a slow rate. If you hate Microsoft's products or you think that they are buggy and too monopolistic try this alternative, Macromedia HOMESITE, that's if you want learn programming.

Summary: Great web creation software for the beginner.
Review: My wife had her website up and running within a day after getting started with FrontPage 2002. It's easy to create and edit existing pages. This is great for basic websites, but if you want fancier and flashier web pages, then the Macromedia Dreamweaver line of software may be a better choice.

Summary: Easy doesn't mean better
Review: FrontPage is fine for personal sites. But if you are creating a site for a real organization, AVOID it.

Frontpage tries to do what lots of programs do-- take a complex task and simplify it, letting the software do a lot of the thinking for you. FrontPage essentially translates what you tell it into HTML that tends to display pretty well on Internet Explorer, but ignores the standards that might allow it to display on the other browsers that 30% (and soon, all AOL users) use. If you're saavy, this means that only a few display elements are off. If you're new to the web game, this means that portions of your site might be impossible to view.

As a commercial web development company, my company has been contracted on numerous occassions to clean up sites developed in FrontPage by some well-meaning employee. This is a painful ... process-- do yourself a favor and take the time to educate yourself about web site development rather than taking the Frontpage shortcut.

Does this mean you need to learn to code HTML? No. You can use a tool just like Microsoft Frontpage-- Macromedia Dreamweaver and Adobe GoLive are both excellent products.
