Summary: Requires constant subscription verification
Review: This software needs to "phone home" often. When it does you need to enter your username and password. It disables itself until it has verified your subscription. Their anti-piracy measures interfere with paying customers. I'm not happy with this program and when my subscription expires I'll be looking for a different solution. Their website is terrible. It's full of "partner pop-up ads", and the customer feedback doesn't work. Use something (anything) else...

Summary: Put on your seat belt and be prepared for a crash !!
Review: My PC Specs: Windows XP, Pentium IV 2.66Ghz, 768MB RAM.

I bought this product and installed it with its default (Supposedly the safest) options.

After using the PC for a while I shut it down normally. Later when I started it, it gave me a Windows 'We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start properly..blah blah blah' error. I started it in safe mode and booted it. Worked fine this time.

The next day when I started the PC the Windows message re-appeared. And this time it stuck for good. My PC just would not start normally. I tried everything possible, applied some fixes available from their site, contacted their technical support who told me to uninstall the viruscan and reboot(what good is an Internet Suite if virusscan is disabled ?) and nothing worked.

Now I'm writing this review after having done a complete System restore to be able to start my PC.

Ironically this product that is supposed to protect my PC from hackers, trojans and system crashes itself crashed the system.

If you think I'm just a disgruntled consumer or that it was some error on my part...put on your seat belt before you install this product on your PC. Better still gift it to someone whom you dislike.

Summary: Only thing more efficient would have been to unplug cable
Review: I have fought this and fought this and fought this...it kills me to have spent this money and not be able to use the product.

I think the anti-virus stuff works.

I think the firewall works.

The privacy service and spamkiller....oh my goodness. I have turned down the controls and turned down the controls to try and let me surf and get emails. I would put people on my "Friends" list and spamkiller would STILL block them. I would then go "rescue message" and it would delete the message altogether.

The privacy service...I still haven't figured that one out. I turned the controls down to where it was for all intents and purposes OFF. STILL could not look at my business webpage stats because it uses pop-ups. So I went to "Log off Privacy Service" - still could not get stats. I ended up having to go to the Windows Task Manager and kill the process guarddog.exe AND ONLY THEN would my webpages work right.

If you don't have concerns about spyware, use Norton. I'm about ready to switch back anyway.

Summary: Good Overall, just don't install the privacy service.
Review: I was choosing between Norton and Mcafee and finally ended up with the latter since it was cheaper when I bought it. Everything worked out fine for the first 3 months. After that however, everything went wrong. It started with error messages whenever my internet explorer closes an adobe file. Then, it progressively got worse. Now, almost everytime I click a link which pops-up a new window, my explorer hangs. Thinking that it has something to do with ad-blocking and cookie-blocking, I disabled these features. But that did not work. I found out that holding down the control key while clicking a link solved the problem PARTIALLY. But then I got fed up with the still contionous hangs in the majority of websites I visit. Fortunately, I read somewhere in the reviews that most of the problems are caused by the privacy service included with the suite, so I uninstalled the privacy service and everything went back to normal. BOTTOM LINE: don't install the privacy service and just use the internet explorer's privacy settings instead. As for the firewall and virusscan, they get the job done.

Summary: Plan on a lot of customer support
Review: Installed the software as per the instructions (using the defaults) and all hell broke loose.

Tried to contact McAfee thru their web page support service. (You have to chat with them because that is the only free customer service offered. No telephone service because they charge you a fee for that.)

I discovered on my own that the default setting is to filter chat rooms. Go figure. I uninstalled the software, took the chat room filter off, and had to spend an additional five hours chatting with their customer support service to fix all the problems I have been experiencing.

Some of the problems you will discover is that this software does not like Windows Service Pack 2 or any other additional security software to be installed on your computer. Furthermore, it does not like to have the Windows Firewall turned on when installing. Keep these words of caution in mind. There are numerous other problems, but I don't want to bore anyone. I did finally manage to get this software to function properly, but only after numerous attemps on my own and thru countless customer support sessions. I would estimate I spent a total of 15-18 hours de-bugging this junk.

This software has an overall rating of "2 Stars" as rated by approximately 70 other Amazon.com users. The problem is approximately 70 different Amazon.com user gave a similar "2 Star" rating for the other Software offerd by Symantic - Norton Internet Security 2005. My next purchase will be the Norton Internet Security 2005 because it had a better rating in the Consumers Report and I can't imagine it being any worse.

Summary: Do not buy this software
Review: When I first installed McAfee, I had problems with it already. The program will not install in my computer. So I contacted their Tech Support via their webpage. One out four Technical Chat Support I contacted, only one of them was able to help me. (They charge to speak to Tech Support via phone). I've only had the software for one week, but it always has some issues popping up, i.e. One of the four programs not installed or updated, computer crashes, etc. After I've finally updated all the program then another problem came up, The Spamkiller and Firewall that is included on this software had conflicted with my outlook express which caused me to not be able to receive e-mails from outlook. This software is a waste of time and money. I'am now uninstalling it from my computer. Please do some research first before buying anything especially computer software.

Summary: McAfee is the virus
Review: I notice the product rating for McAfee Internal Security Suite 6.0 has dropped to two stars. It deserves the rating. I purchased version 6.0 six months ago. I read the pros and the cons for Norton and McAfee. I now realize those who stated McAfee was junk are correct. Soon after I complete this review I will proceed to delete McAfee from my computer and eat the cost. A virus will typically infect files and software components. Causing odd problems and fustrations. McAfee Version 6.0 causes alot of odd problems and great fustrations. McAfee seems to consistently change my Email settings. I consistently have problems with the updates. Pop-ups continue to appear warning me about Window XP components. Even though I have click accept these programs multiple times. Spam killer stops all the mail. I have uninstalled the program and the installed again. The problems continue. My server says all my internet and Email problems are directly related to McAfee. The server advice. Uninstall and throw the product in the trash. Consider it done. If you are rying to descide between McAfee and Norton. Believe those who have taken the time to complain and warn about this poor software product. Its not what it says it is or does. I use Norton at work and never had a single problem. I'm going with Norton here at home..

Summary: Forget the Privacy Service
Review: As far as I can tell the Virus Scan and Firewall are pretty standard and work well. When you are assessing the price of this product assume this is all you are getting. Forget the Privacy Service module. It is a piece of software junk, and McAfee will not admit there is a problem. (Check out their technical forums for posts from angry customers). Their on-line help is next to useless, and their administrators behave like thought police - deleting any implied criticism. The Privacy Service interferes with various functions of the computer, in my case it shuts down internet access, whether its features are turned on or off. Only uninstalling it will clear the problem, then you have to re-install it as a standalone programme afterwards. When that crashes the connection it is near-impossible to get rid of it in a way that removes all traces. Don't buy yourself several hours of hassle - if you buy the product don't install Privacy Service at all.

Summary: I love this hardworking slave!!!
Review: This software bundle works like a charm. I had this internet suite installed through their website about three months ago and I am now way past convinced - this software is truly heaven sent! To me it's impressive because it's compact and highly functional, and takes up a fraction of what Norton Internet Suite 2004 does for resources. It hasn't hanged up on me nor on the other 5 accounts of my PC that uses this service as well, for three months now. Its interface is easy to use and understand with quick transition in every click, and contains all the essential functions that I would ever need. Unlike the Norton Suite where it's filled with worthless and non-essential buttons which further slows down the software's functionality. In fact, my favorite feature of this suite is the firewall's real time display of the inbound events, which shows me who's been trying to make a connection with my PC, be it good guys or bad. (Try that with the Norton Suite!) Updating is also excellent over Norton, where it's automated, quick, and non-complicated. And most of all, it also has a security centre where it sums up all of the features of the suite and provide you with a security index (finally a software that talks back about how safe my PC is). I could go on and on about how good this software is, but it's on you, the buyer, who has to see it for yourself. I know I did and never had I been more comfortable using my PC since I had the Norton nightmare not so long ago. Skeptics may doubt, opposition may defame, and you may think twice, but I wouldn't care for the world because I know I'm having a good time using this software. sweet.

Summary: Good Overall, just don't install the privacy service.
Review: I really don't know how McAfee stays in business. This is the most dysfunctional software package I have encountered, even topping Intuit's Turbotax.

What's wrong? How about: (1) installation requires entering the same information and restarting the computer over and over; (2) the security level are not described well, making you guess at what levels you want or need (warning: don't guess wrong); (3) the suite inexplicably disables Internet Explorer features, like address pulldown bars; (4) the program is a memory hog, (5) any live technical support costs $$$; (6) when I did used e-mail technical help, it took 10 days for a response (I'm not kidding) and the response was simply a denial that the problem was caused by the McAfee program; and (7) it tells you that you are 100% protected when the associated feature is actually disabled (again, I'm not making this up!).

In summary, McAfee's Security Suite's approach to protecting your PC is to prevent you from using it.
