Rating: Summary: Adobe Hits a HOMERUN Again! Review: I could not be more pleased with my newest version on Acrobat, the functionality is outstanding and many of the PDF converting tools have been enhanced. Great Job!
Rating: Summary: Bugs and more bugs Review: I bought this product based upon the advertised new features about combining documents. After installing the product I found that the Adobe Distiller printer was no longer there and my program depended upon that printer. Eventually I got a printer set up and things working and then I found that when I moved bookmarks in my document and saved the file that the new locations for the bookmarks were not saved. Called help support and they said that it must be a problem with something I was doing (ever heard that before?). Problem never solved. The next problem that I encounter was out of warranty (one-month) and it was to late to return the product. I'll bet that if they gave a six month warranty they couldn't hire enough people to man the help desk. I think I have been had.
Rating: Summary: Interesting new features for advanced users. Review: It's early days yet, with this new version of Acrobat. Anyway, like everyone else who's run it so far it's a real heave to get launched in comparison to Acrobat 5, but it does render fonts out nice and sharp and bold, unlike 5.0. This was often noticeable when coming from a Word document you had converted to a .PDF: the fonts looking faint in comparison to the Word original. The basic interface looks a bit more stylish, and some of the basic .PDF conversion procedures have been simplified for those not familiar with the application, which they would need to be, to get the benefit from the...price tag for the Pro version ( Standard doesn't do forms. - For heaven's sake!). Some customers have complained about the scanner performance. Get a grip, people. This is only a convenient appendage, you should really be scanning into an image application - such as Photoshop Elements - and printing the tweaked result as a .PDF. I never found this to a serious way to get scans into .PDFs. And even the OCR feature with a direct scan to create a searchable .PDF for scanned text, is too poor to be bothered with. So this is a low priority issue. It requiring a prorper OCR application, such as FineReader 5.0/6.0, to do the job properly. Forms are easily created. But active ones are still a problem without the end user having Acrobat Approval or the full Acrobat to fill them in and save. This is an issue that really should be addressed by Adobe in their Acrobat Reader, but they're too busy chasing clients for their mega-buck Documents Rights management system which will permit the 5.1/6.0 versions of the Acrobat Reader to save. THIS [is terrible]. ADOBE!!!! But at least an applied digital signature can be verified with the 5.1/6.0 readers. I haven't checked this, so make sure any 6.0 level digital signatures and files work with Acrobat 5.0/5.5 and the 5.1 reader. Those familiar with, and happy with 5.0/5.5, might want to think about upgrading, unless CAD layers support is a required feature. New buyers will have no choice but go for 6.0, so - in their case - the choice doesn't occur.
Rating: Summary: No WebDav capability in 6.0 for MAC Review: Acrobat 6.0 for MACs does not contain a feature that was available in 5.0 and that remains in the PC 6.0. The MAC 6.0 does not have the WebDav feature to allow online editing of a document. How can it be an "advance" that the MAC version loses a feature that's kept for the PC version?
Rating: Summary: Great Software Review: This software Create PDF files from almost any word processing or html programs with very effective compression ratio almost 1/10 the original size. You can also convert post script ps files into PDF files. You can extract pictures, text from any already created PDF files as well. With this version you can also create an interactive electronic forms similar to the tax forms. This upgrade version will only install on your system if you have Adobe acrobat 4 or 5 installed. This version only works with windows XP, 2000, NT with latest service package. The difference between the acrobat 6.0 and the acrobat 5.0 is not so big. The new version is optimized for intel P4 systems and it's slightly faster than the old version.
Rating: Summary: This Stinks Review: Does not support Windows 98 operating system.
Rating: Summary: Too Many Bugs...Wait for First Service Pack Review: Unfortunately it looks like Adobe released Acrobat 6 too early. There are quite a few bugs and problems with no fixes yet. In general the program operates much slower than Acrobat 5. The main problem many users, including myself, presently have with Acrobat 6 is that we can not import a scan from our scanners. Some scanners work, but many do not (including most if not all HP USB scanners, and many other manufacturer USB scanners). There is presently no fix for the problem. I needed to be able to scan images into acrobat, so I had to temporarily uninstall Acrobat 6 and downgrade myself to Acrobat 5 until the problems are worked out. Adobe does not provide any time frame when a service pack to fix this problem will be made available. I suggest that potential buyers examine the Adobe users forum to see the many problems people are encountering with Acrobat 6... My suggestion is to wait until Adobe works out the problems in this version before you purchase it. They are a good company, so I know they will eventually get to fixing all the problems. Those of us who paid the money for the software already are stuck waiting for this to happen. In my case, the software is essentially useless until this happens. Good luck, if you decide to get it now. In my opinion, Adobe just released this one too eary. Hopefully next time they will test it first.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Upgrade Review: This is an outstanding upgrade of a product I have used since version 3 or so. The ability to combine files of multiple types (images, docs, PowerPoints, other PDF, other Office) into a single pdf in one step is very valuable to me. Selection tools have been simplified and improved. Search function is much improved. I have Snagit already, but ability to take screen shots within PDF is valuable. Lots of other enhancements make the upgrade price very reasonable.
Rating: Summary: Intrusive and Slow Review: Be warned: this latest release of Acrobat continues Adobe's aggressive trend of intruding into your desktop environment, this time without providing an easy way to undo the damage once its done. Like earlier releases, this version of Acrobat adds startup macros and new toolbar buttons to your existing applications and adds menu entries to your desktop "right click" menus. Adobe argues that these are conveniences, but they are entirely unnecessary (for most of us "printing" to Adobe PDF achieves the same result, is much more convenient, and a more natural model), and clutter what for most users is either a too-crowded user interface (for those who don't have the knowledge or patience to customize it) or a carefully tuned one (for those who do). Unlike many well-behaved applications that provide obvious ways of avoiding this kind of intrusive and disruptive behavior (e.g. through a simple checkbox option in a settings dialog), Acrobat's "option" for disabling this behavior are deeply hidden in the setup process. To disable the "Convert to Adobe PDF" button that mysteriously appears in the Outlook mail editor, for example, one has to be sure to choose "this feature will not be available" from the "Microsoft Outlook" option under "Acrobat PDFMaker" under "Create Adobe PDF". Simply deleting the button using Outlook's toolbar customization feature will not work: it comes right back when the editor is next opened. Similar problems arise in Word, Excel, Visio, Project, and Internet Explorer. And there's simply no way to get rid of the never-used "Convert to Adobe PDF" and "Combine in Acrobat..." entries in that appear in the desktop context menus for files (even if one installs none of the Acrobat PDFMaker features). In short, Acrobat will make a mess of your working environment, there's no way to completely fix it, and even the partial fix is a pain (and not well documented). (This may seem a minor issue, but if every application followed Adobe's reckless example, our working environments would start to look like strip malls, crowded with features screaming for our attention to the point where it is hard to find what we need when we need it. One of the great strengths of the personal computer desktop is that users can configure it in ways that suit their needs; no application should interfere with that.) Experienced Acrobat users will also notice that this version continues another frustrating trend for Acrobat (and most other Adobe applications): it is yet again slower to launch than the previous version. In fact, on my 2 GHz Pentium 4, it takes longer to launch than the entire Visual Studio .NET development environment, and longer than the boot sequence for Windows XP! There are other minor problems as well (arbitrary rearrangements of menu and tool bar items, etc.) but these two major flaws are more than bad enough. Unless you really need the latest Acrobat features, you should probably avoid this upgrade. And if the "improvements" in this release are any indication of where Adobe plans to go with future releases, it may be time to start looking elsewhere for a tool for digital document management.
Rating: Summary: Acrobat 6.0 Amazes me! Review: I love to convert webpages into PDF for future reference. This new version easily converts and even maintains the hyperlinks. A wonderful program in all aspects! The Upgrade was worth every penny for me!
