Summary: Bad bad virus program
Review: I guess this software beats nothing, but not by much. I've mistakenly buy this product for years now and have had my share of problems with it. this years problem is that it has this new product activation that we windows xp users have come to know and love. This isn't a feature or an option and it isn't protecting you the buyer. but it is one more little pain in the A$$ that only symantec could dish up and get away with.

You can also forget any help from symantec should your product find a virus or should you find the product stops working and it does at times. it's going to cost you 39 dollars a problem to get to talk to a real person. I just had to do a clean install of windows xp to get my virus program back and running again because symantec didn't send out a clear update at times to its products. This happens a lot or so it seems. I just notice it more because I have more then one computer.

If you can do a little research and take a little time you can do a lot better then this. your owe your computer this and the internet, but go ahead buy it if you think it's going to help just let me say I warned you.

Summary: Program Attempts to Contact a "Third Party" through Firewall
Review: The Norton Antivirus program seemed to work OK at first but after a recent update two components of the program attempted to contact "crl.verisign.com" through my firewall. I denied access for the Norton Antivirus to communicate with Verisign but the problems did not end there. When I would open any of my Microsoft Word documents the Word document would attempt to contact crl.verisign.com during the Norton document virus scan. If the access is denied at the firewall it takes over ONE MINUTE to open a word document while the firewall blocks hundreds of attempts to contact crl.verisign.com during the virus scan.

I went to the company's website to obtain information and to post my question - Why is your program contacting a third party? - on their support posting site, but Symantec has taken this away, opting for a small program "download" that I would have to allow access through my firewall.

I think I speak for others when I express a concern about ANY program on my computer attempting to contact an unauthorized third party via a firewall. What would have happened if I had had Norton Internet Security (Norton - Symantec's Firewall/Antivirus program) on my desktop? Would Norton's firewall allow connections to this unauthorized third party?

Unable to get answers to my questions from Norton-Symantec and unwilling to wait over one minute for my Word document virus scans to complete I uninstalled Norton AND, now get this, during the uninstall it attempted to contact crl.verisign.com to report the uninstall! I completed the uninstall then proceeded to do a complete reformat of my drives and then a reinstall of all of my programs MINUS Norton's Antivirus program.

Due to a lack of free support from their site and a program that attempted to contact an unauthorized third party server through my firewall, I will never purchase another Norton or Symantec product in the future. I received good service from this product for a few months, but one of their program "updates" made it worthless.

Summary: Horrible
Review: I work in a small office and loaded Norton Antivirus 2004 on our four computers. It SERIOUSLY affected the performance of every one of our machines. My PC was nearly unusable so I ended up having to remove Norton. My computer froze in the middle of this process and we ended up having to get a computer expert in to fix everything.
I have been using Norton for five years and never experienced any problems at all until this 2004 release. DO NOT BUY IT!

Summary: Worst antivirus system I've ever used
Review: I bought this on Friday 9th January and demanded and got a refund the next day (not from Amazon, I might add...but I am posting this review to give a "heads up" to people). The Email Scanning didn't work and gave me an error message that Symantec had no info on their site about, and the AutoScan option kept resetting to Off every time I restarted my PC. There was a note at Symantec stating this was a known problem and they posted a "fix" for it which I tried a few times to no avail. The direct customer service was less than helpful. They told me immediately that they had to call me back due to a long phone queue and then didn't ring me. When I called again, I found the customer support office was closed.

I won't be purchasing anything from Nortons again and have since chosen another company for my PC protection needs.

Summary: I Think It Needs More Work
Review: I am an average intelligent PC buyer. I have had virus problems with my Microsoft Outlook and from my internet explorer.

I bought the new software to upgrade my Norton from 2002 on a regular Compaq with 1.5 GHz speed. The symptoms were that the worm kept shutting down the computer every 30 minutes. It turned out I had three worms.

First I tried to install the Norton with the worms. I found the new Norton impossible to install, or if it was installed it caused the computer to slow right down. When installed it did not detect the worm(s).

So I used another program to clear the worms and had to re-install XP. At that point I was starting fresh no worms everything is fine. I had removed all the Norton files that the computer would let me remove.

Same problem when I tried to re-install Norton again same thing - just ran very slow. So I removed the Norton. Now the unit runs fast and with no problems. I think the product needs improving. I would not consider ever using Norton again until I read that it has improved. I encountered similar problems before but ran the Norton disabled. This seemed worse now and somehow more complicated since I installed both the 2002 and 2004.

I am sure Norton knows this and is working on improvements to get around the speed reduction problem.

Currently using free virus software recommended by my internet provider.

Summary: S L O W>>>>>>>>This will realy slow down your computer
Review: I installed this last week and I've already uninstalled it. This SLOWED down my computer dramtically. I've heard other users call this program Bloatware and now I see why. I just downloaded pc-cillin and it is great so far. My computer speed is back up and I'm happy again. I would not even mess with Norton anymore.

Summary: NAV 2004 problems
Review: After several months of not being able to renew my 2002 Professional Edition NAV subscrition, I bit the bullet and purchased a new 2004 Norton Anti Virus. It initially installed correctly (apparently) but after a week or son I noticed it wasn't performing automatic scans, so I ran one manually. It identified some files that needed to be deleted which I did. Since then the whole system has been acting up. I tried several times to uninstall and re-install NAV 2004 with no luck. With info from the Symantec site (they have been no help at all and are obviously still denying there is a problem), I have tried everything. I have even now returnred NAV 2004 and purchased NAV 2003. This will also not install because of changes to files that NAV 2004 caused. I have serached and deleted all the files I can that were associated with NAV 2004, but still no luck. I recommend using other products.

Summary: Product Activation is buggy - reinstall OS and NAV breaks
Review: If you ever need to reinstall your operating system, such as when you upgrade or replace a hard drive, Norton Anti-Virus 2004 activation will think you are pirating the software (since you have already activated it once before). LiveUpdate then quits working. I've been working with Symantec Tech Support for weeks (with no virus updates in the meantime), and they have been slow and no help. Best resort is to repurchase the software (or go with McAfee instead).
