Rating: Summary: Its great for what it is, but KNOW what it is! Review: Firstly, if you have to have a mouse for everything you may want to consider another Linux distribution Like SuSE, Red Hat, or Mandrake, that have wizard type installations, and default answers. If you like using a CLI/Console ... AKA command prompt read on.Slackware linux is really good for what it is. And What is it? Slackware is the oldest Linux distribution, and requires a bit more knowledge to setup. Slackware is great for setting up a router, FTP, e-mail, web, or database server. I've even known people who use it as a fileserver on a windows network! And since it loads minimal background services/processes, it doesn't bog down the system. So it's great for older hardware. It's one of the quickest and most robust FTP/POP3 servers I've ever used, even on a 133Mhz Pentium system. If you love DOS you'll feel right at home with Slackware. Hand editing the configuration/startup scripts means you know *exactly* what's happening inside your system. It is possible to browse the web, retrieve, send email, even read news with the console based programs that come with Slackware Linux. Now don't get the wrong idea, Slackware does have the option to install a GUI. But you'll need to configure it and know a little about what makes it tick.
