Summary: OK, so far
Review: I've had some problems with VirusScan 6.0, but I may have solved some of them. First of all, if you're going to buy this product, I would recommend you download it from McAfee.com because you'll get the latest version, 6.01, which presumably has less bugs. If you buy the glitchy CD-ROM at a retail store, you'll get version 6.0. Here is how I installed the program:

First I uninstalled my current version of McAfee VirusScan, 5.21, and rebooted. Ran a quick Scan Disk and deleted any temporary internet files. I went online, downloaded and saved the McAfee installation file (a huge 32MB; thank God for cable modems) to my Windows 98 destkop. I then rebooted into Safe Mode and installed VirusScan 6.0 from there. Someone told me to do this because when you're in Safe Mode the minimum number of drivers and programs are running. This lessens the chance of a file corrupting the installation of VirusScan.

During the installation, I passed on installing the Firewall and Safe & Sound programs. Too much extra baggage for me. I just wanted VirusScan 6.0. Everything has been fine, so far. However, I don't leave McAfee VirusScan running all the time because it really slows down my system when it's on, more so than version 5.21. I just update the DAT and engine files and run occasional virus scans. I realize this increases the danger of virus infections, but it is a tradeoff I'm willing to make.

Summary: Ok Product, but lots of problems
Review: Like many of the other reviewers, I have also had trouble with this product. I would only reccomend buying this product if you have lots of free time to figure out the bugs and other problems that come along with this software. Also the Firewall program isn't easy to configure at first. I still keep getting Rulaunch errors, even though I downloaded a patch to supposedly fix this problem. There technical support is a total joke. I had to search the web site several times before I found a solution on how to make my internet connection work, since the Firewall disabled my connection. The Firewall also slows down my internet connection. The instant updater is a pain and takes forever to get a update. The only good thing that I can say is that Viruscan seems to work when scanning my computer, but it takes forever. I'm very disapointed in McaFee because I had McaFee VirusScan 4.01 and never had trouble until I bought there upgrade. Next time I think that I will take a closer look at Norton.

Summary: Crashed Windows 98 SE; take your chances on a virus
Review: This software bites!! It crashed Windows 98 SE and I was unable to start-up. Only the fact that we have two PCs and I could access the Msoft site for help saved me. McAfee charges for live tech support even on day 1! Now they tell me (via chat) that the work-around is to edit my autoexec.bat file. Just what the average PC owner wants to do. ...

Summary: Unhappy Customer
Review: We purchased this software and ultimately had to remove it from our computer - now we use Norton and have had no problems. Please don't buy the McAfee software. What happened is that were sent an upgrade via e-mail and found out (only after we downloaded the upgrade) that it would screw up our computer because we operate on Windows XP. We tried to get help on their long distance line and after pushing all the right buttons to get to a live body, we were disconnected - 3 times. Looking on line did not help - and our only other option was to pay $35 for telephone support. Why bother.

Summary: Got countless hours of your precious life to waste??
Review: When I installed this on my home PC the installation routine corrupted the registry preventing a reboot in anything other than Windows safe-mode. Once I restored my registry settings I couldn't connect to the internet due to the fire-wall that was part of this software - and couldn't turn off the firewall.

On contacting McAfee I was told they didn't support products purchased through Amazon.com.
