Summary: Worked great for me..
Review: After reading these reviews I was a bit surprised at all of the negative ones. The only issue that I had with this product was the internet filter. That was mainly because I couldn't get the control over what would and wouldn't pass the filter that I really wanted. If you want a good Internet Filter/Cookie control/Ad control/Firewall for the internet I would suggest Zone Alarms PRO. I installed this Mcafee version 6 on my Windows XP Dell computer and had absolutely no problems. No freezing, no update issues, no slowing down of my computer. It works great. And it has been able to detect a number of viruses and block them before they got onto my computer. I tried Norton Antivirus and after getting a virus on my computer that Norton would not remove (even after downloading all the latest definition files), I loaded Mcafee and updated it, and it removed all the viruses. The only reason for the 4 instead of the 5 was my disappointment in the Internet Filter that was provided. Otherwise this would have been a 5. I would buy this product again in a heartbeat.

Summary: McAfee Internet Security 4+ ( VirusScan 6 & Firewall etc )
Review: Feb 26 2002 McAfee Internet Security 4+ includes VirusScan6 and Firewall. Its been a little "rocky" on my ME box with "rulaunch" problems and "guarddog.exe" sometimes freezes up when interacting with IE/Outlook/Explorer (File Mgr & Desktop). I downloaded latest patches 4.02.1023.0 and this has helped. My brother has been trying to get McAfee working on his Win2K box and it has been VERY difficult, the worst of the problems seem to relate to the firewall software. Sometime it prevents PC from being shutdown/restarted ( can only hit reset button ) It appears the software wants RAS? mgr/monitor? to be installed (why???) also problem with NT security with one of the services. By installing latest updates, changing security for service(s), updates to registry, manually downloading updates, some help from B Clinton (McAfee chat support) it seems to be working after a fashion. This product seems like ALPHA software on Win2000 SP2 and Network Associates s/b ashamed... you may get it to work but its gonna be painnnnnnnnn full ( I've been in IT industry for 18+ years soooo I've seen a few things...

Summary: No installation problems
Review: I bought the cd version and had no installation problems.
The following may help others trying to install it, and trying to use the automatic update feature.

I had mcafee 4.0.2, which is no longer supported, and did the following: I removed the old McAfee version through the control panel "add/remove programs" option, rather than inserting the new cd and letting the install program of version 6.0 remove it. I went to the mcafee website and downloaded the 6.01 version available there as well. I had no files deleted or other problems ensue from the installation process. I used "custom install" and did not load it's firewall application, as I use Zonealarm.

Regarding the automatic update feature, this was blocked by my firewall, (giving an "unable to connect to server" message) which could explain some of the problems others have described in trying to use that feature. I use ZoneAlarm as a firewall, and configured it to accept the connection to Mcafee. One could also disable or temporarily close the firewall and then click on the "check for a VirusScan update" option on the Mcafee menu, which will now be allowed to go out and connect to the Mcafee server and check for available updates.

Once installed, it is fairly easy to use and configure. Scheduling time for scans is not a problem--the interface panel has everything on it you need, under the "pick a task" bar. On the interface panel there is a "check for update" option, and this works reliably. The program hasn't slowed anything down or deleted any files.

I don't know if any of this made for my trouble free install, or if I was just lucky. There seems to be more problems with deletion of the imagehlp.dll file from the windows\system directory when Mcafee replaces the Norton antivirus product, and this problem has been identified by Norton (Symantec) in the Mcafee 5.x series.

Summary: So sluggish it's almost useless
Review: I have used two version sof McAfee and both were a waste of money. They dragged my machine down so heavily that it became effectively useless. The mouse movements actually mimicked action that was like a viral infection draining the CPU. I switched to OnTrack's Fix-It v4, and everything has run beautifully since.

Summary: Works great
Review: I installed it and it worked, mostly. The original 6.0 is admittedly buggy. Once you down load the latest patch from the McAfee web site, it's fine. This does not bother me for two reasons. First, who on the planet has ever had dealings with a Microsoft product that was perfect the first time? There are hardly any pieces of software that are 100% bug free in version x.0. That's why reputable vendors have Web sites and patches. If you have spent any amount of time in the computer world you know what I mean. There is nothing like getting a service pack for you NOS that makes things worse and takes down 500 some hosts. It happens. Now, if the vendor doesn't have a patch, okay we have a problem.
Second, this is an advanced piece of software. This ain't no Ford Pinto. We're talking about a Lamborghini. If you want that kind of power and performance, you may have to deal with a bit of tweaking. But the results are awesome.
Now I hear you whining "But I don't want to buy a product that I have to service immediately." As soon as you bought a computer, this is what you get. Don't like it? Buy a toaster!
Most problems I have seen users run into are because they either A} are the 1 in 1000 people who are going to have a problem with whatever they try to run B} Don't get the patch C} are running Norton.
Now, C is interesting. McAfee stuff won't work with Norton, and Norton won't work with McAfee. I'm mad now! You mean to tell me I can't run my Windows version of Word on a Mac! This is what software companies do to keep away competition. You have to commit to either McAfee or Norton. They can't and won't play together and that is the way BOTH of them want it. If you have Norton currently and want to go to McAfee, or want to mix the two, understand you must choose one or the other. It's like a bad soap opera. Don't get mad at a software product because of industry convention. Deal with it and choose what team you want to be on.
Great software. Buy it. Love it. Keep the bugs away.

Summary: Crashes After Install
Review: I just got the package for Windows XP and proceeded to install. During the installation, I updated to the latest and greatest as of Auguest 2004. After reboot, the product crashes with errors for "VirusScanSynchMgrClass: Avsynmgr.exe" and twice "RuLaunch". This is horrific.

My system is realatively clean with only Office 2003 (all patches applied), Virtual PC 2004, and Yahoo Messenger on Windows XP Pro (all patches appied).

I think products that out of the box crash is just unethical, even more so when the latest patches/updates don't work. It shows that the company either cuts corners on software quality assurance or management that ships the products with known bugs. Either way, this is not the type of company that you want to buy products from period. Aarrrgh!!!

Summary: Mcafee customer support is the WORST. An utter nightmare.
Review: I purchased this software after trying unsuccessfully to download VirusScan Online SIX TIMES. The Mcafee website is so truly awful its scary - to login to their website you have to either delete all of your cookies, or reset your Internet security option in Internet Explorer. Totally unacceptable! Their technical support chatroom staff are totally inexperienced call-center people who enter in pre-written statements that dont answer questions. After I typed in my entire problem, explaining that i could not login and activate my account, the rep responded "Did you login and activate your account?". Totally infuriating. Technical support for Mcafee products is ridiculous. If you want to speak to someone on the phone, its extremely ... if you try to get help through the website, you get no telephone numbers, only directions to use the useless chat feature. Go with NORTON instead!

Summary: Norton is better!!
Review: I was really disappointed with this product. McAfee used to have such a great reputation for their products.. I don't know what happened.
VirusScan 6.0 is a terrible program. I have a very new PC and VirusScan eats up a lot of the resources and slows down my computer. It's not worth the money.
