Summary: VS 7.0
Review: I think this is the best yet for McAfee ! It makes installing, upgrading, and maintenance easy for the common home user. Sometimes simply having a product is better than not having one at all. Security is essential for home users and this product provides necessary protection.

Summary: Great program IF it installs properly, & support costs $$$!
Review: McAfee's one of the premier virus scanners around. However, like with the proverbial 600-pound gorilla Microsoft, McAfee can cop a major attitude with customers.

When I upgraded my XP machine from VirusScan 6.0 to 7.0, I had to go through several install-reboot-unistall-reboot-reinstall-reboot cycles before the installation finally "took." Until I hit the jackpot, the program wouldn't initiate properly, would hang, would crash after popping up unintelligible error messages, or wouldn't "remember" settings from a previous session.

Worst of all, if you aren't lucky enough to have a successful installation, you have to PAY FOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT TO GET THE PROGRAM YOU PAID FOR TO WORK PROPERLY. (You can use the online help service for free -- but this will be helpful only if your issue is a FAQ.)

Imagine if you purchased a new car that wouldn't start properly and you had to pay the dealer to tell you how to fix it. A 60 Minutes camera crew would be at the dealership's doors!

Summary: FIREWALL HAS HUGE CONFLICTS WITH SBC DSL
Review: I bought this software from McAfee and literally could not get the firewall to work...

Summary: Much worse then previous versions
Review: Virusscan 7 is big disappointment over the previous versions. The interface is clunkier, the background scanner often experiences a massive memory leak, which will eat up 700MB of Ram/Swap space before crashing, and it's a pain to get to the advanced options.

But my biggest problem was that if you EXPLICITELY opt to not install the firewall, Mcafee still puts a rudimentary filter in (just no GUI) that has a tenacious ability to hose your internet settings. Windows will complain that it is unable to create sockets, and as a result many server applications will not work (Apache, Telnet).

Summary: It worked for me..
Review: I don't know much about Norton Antivirus as I was using Mcafee from the day one and it worked well for me and also removed some viruses.Recently I bought VirusScan Home Edition 7.0 from Amazon.com as an upgrade and I am completly satisfied with this product....But firewall keeps me not connected to internet..Overall It is ok for me...

Summary: MORE SATISFACTION FOR LESS MONEY
Review: Together with its updated Firewall protection, this 7.0 Home Edition McAfee VirusScan offers more satisfaction for less money. It executes its job with maximum efficiency. It is also more stable and less hassle-laden than most comparative products from other manufacturers. Installation is easy; and updating via Internet is straightforward. However, depending on your Operating System's stability and Hardware configurations, you may run into a hitch if you attempt to customize it.

Summary: Looks good on paper but didn't work for me
Review: I bought Ver 7.0 (free on mail-n-rebate)from BestBuy, took home & it appeared to be getting ready to install. Install screen came & then it jumped to an error saying Autorun failed. Tried everything per manual, won't install. Store gave me second CD & didn't get install screen this time & got Autorun error. I had ver 4.0 mcafee on my system. Store asked me to contact Mcafee. I was on hold for 30mins & hung-up. Then phone said will charge me by time if I need tech support. Asked the store to show whether this CD would install on any test PC they have & would go further than the install screen. I told them if they could show this I can take the s/w & talk to Mcafee. They turn down this suggestion & finally offered me Norton Antivirus 2003 (Hang type pack, not box) for 29.99. Took home put the CD in, BOOM!, Bingo! everything was cool. Now I use Norton AV 2003. By the way I'm 40.

Summary: Excellent combination of Anti-Virus and Firewall!
Review: I have used VirusScan 5.21 together with Black Ice Defender firewall without any problems other than significant slowing down of the system at times. I purchased VirusScan 6.0 but decided not to install it given the large number of problems reported on this webpage. Having read the favorable comments on VirusScan 7.0, I decided to purchase it (free with the special offers at the time from McAfee and Amazon.com)and give it a try.
The results are amazing! I have not had my computer (a 450 mhz- "slow" these days!)operate so well since I purchased it four years ago! Absolutely everything runs extremely well, with no slowdown of anything whatsoever!
The amount of information McAfee provides with respect to all aspects of what is happening all of the time is astounding! Installation is very, very easy- no problems at all! I very highly recommend it and appreciate having customer reviews on this website!

Summary: install it and forget about it
Review: Its easy to install and use - I don't like to mess with it afterwards but my husband likes the Firewall option. We received a virus from AIM and Virusscan caught it before it could damage our network. Thanks!
