Summary: Well worth it
Review: I switched to McAfee from Norton for two reasons: It was free after rebates (the Norton upgrade would have cost me, this was free). McAfee also has the firewall built into the same basic antivirus program. In Norton it is only in the suite, or to be purchased seperately. Both Norton and McAfee are leaders in the industry, both offer the same excellent protection. McAfee installed very easily into my Windows XP Toshiba. For the price and features - this beats Norton easily.

Summary: Be careful
Review: It doesn't support email agents other than MS Outlook. So you are not protected when you are using other email agents.

Summary: Takes Hours to Download
Review: Took 4 attempts to download. This program kept getting stuck & the support staff's advice was to CTRL ALT DELETE and do the download from the beginning 4 times...There is no way to pick up where you left off on this download.

Wait time for chat support (other than that you have to pay) was @ 10 minutes. My 80 year old grandmother is more computer savvy than the support staff.

From start to finish the install time was well over 3 hours not 30 minutes.

If you buy this
1) don't make any plans
2) expect to spend an entire evening aggravated

Summary: No match for Norton
Review: I decided to try this software because I could get it for free (due to promotions) and Norton wanted much more for the subscription.

Installation on Windows 2000 immediately presented a problem: the entire system hung after the installation. McAfee's support is useless, just their user's forum on their web site. Many users reported the same installation problem, but nobody has received any help from the company (I stopped watching the forum after a few weeks). To compromise, I had to turn off one of the major services on Windows 2000. Unless the company fixes this problem soon, I am gong back to Norton.

This particular problem may not affect you if you don't use the product on Win2K, but being a software developer, I extrapolate my negative experience to the robustness of the McAfee's products in general. This is shame that the last line of defense like anti-viral software is crafted so unprofessionally.

Summary: Save yourself some money and don't get mcafee
Review: My company uses McAfee and I spend a good portion of my week helping users resolve virus problems and damaged caused by viruses. I've also used other Anti-virus software and from my experience McAfee has been the least reliable and the most problematic. First of all, they are usually the last to release DAT files to catch and repair viruses. Second, they have released DAT files and superDAT (virus scan engine) files that have caused their application to either consume 99-100% of cpu time or to misreport activity as a virus and prompt the user to delete the file. This happened to me once last year and again 2 weeks ago. Thirdly, if you plan to visit their homepage, get a popup killer. The main page is loaded with pop up ads trying to market various products. Fourth, the virus removal tools or registry edits, when available, are typically not designed for the average user to implement. Personally, the first places I check for virus removal tools and information are Trend Micro and Symantec.

If you're looking for a reliable and more user friendly antivirus application, I would suggest purchasing Norton/Symantec Antivirus. If you're looking for something that is free, try AVG Antivirus. I haven't tried this myself, but I've heard it is a good application that offers free antivirus updates.

Summary: This Software is [no good] And Support is bloody awful!
Review: McAfee has a cavalier attitude to upgrades. Upgrading from Version 6 to Version 7 was a nightmare. The software wouldn't install. Support was unintelligent and seemingly based on keywords. Staff absolutely cretinous. Finally after hacking around with the registry for weeks managed to get version 7 installed.

However, settings aren't saved and errors reported every time machine rebooted.

The best brains (sic) in McAfee have been looking at this problem for a month.

To sum up McAfee and the support staff[are disappointing].

VirusScan more like VirusScam.

Summary: Competitive Upgrade = Great Value
Review: Can't beat the price of this item (after rebate). In the battle between Norton and McAfee, now McAfee offers a competitive upgrade rebate that allows you to get money back even if you are upgrading from a Norton product. I'd stack this anti-virus program up against anything on the market for the home user and have found the interface to be very user friendly. Updates via the web are very easy and can be automated to occur when you connect. You can schedule your drives for scanning anytime and this version even comes with McAfee's Firewall program which keeps your PC safe while connected to the web.
BOTTOM LINE: A 1st class product with an unbeatable price (after rebate)

Summary: Danger Will Robinson!...
Review: I was a big fan of McAfee until this version. I have used VirusScan 4,5,6 and now 7. Well, version 7 finally did it. I have a Windows 2000 machine and it totally killed my boot log and I can no longer boot into Windows. I will have to reinstall all of my software, etc. I am a computer consultant that builds computers, networks and custom applications for customers and this will cost me hundreds of dollars in lost time. DO NOT INSTALL!... Warning! It will crash your system. Beware!

I guess I will have to become a Norton fan......although NAV Corporate Edition does rock!

Summary: Industry standard
Review: it is one of the best Anti Virus in the market. Works well and is very fast. The best part is the firewall which comes free with the package. I will not compare it to other software in the market. There are a few industry standard anti virus out there. Simple advice, buy either Norton or Mcafee products , you will not go wrong. Look out for discounts & rebates like one on Mcafee I got from Amazon. bought it for 50$ and got mail in rebate for 50$! Can't get better than that can it!

Summary: Problematic on XP-Better on 98-Will not work with ZoneAlarm
Review: Desktop, XP: During install said that it was not compatible with ZoneAlarm Pro, and I should remove it, NOT. This is not an acceptable position to NOT be disclosed prior to purchase. There are many millions of copies ZA and it is the best software firewall on the market. I installed VirusScan anyway with no immediate problems. But during the first day or so I began experiencing frequent periods where no data was passed to the Internet, so I uninstalled VirusScan. During the short-time I used it, I too had big memory leaks, on the nature of 20-50 megs when running scans. Scans were fast and background monitoring was leak free and did not seem to slow my system. The new Outlook scan feature was unacceptably slow, it slowed Outlook by a factor of 3 or 4, and Outlook is not fast anyway. Fortunately this feature can be turned off, and the default is off.

Notebook 98: Installed fine and works fine, but I am not running a firewall on my notebook. Also did not slow this machine at all, and this is an old 366 with 128 meg ram. Found a virus on the first virus scan of the hard disk.
