Rating: Summary: It delivers (so far) Review: I decided to upgrade from Windows ME to XP (kind of an error), and of course neither my McAfee bundled antivirus, not my Norton System Works 2000 functioned anymore. I was about to get NS 2003, but the discouraging reviews in Amazon moved me to ger McAffe again after several years. Actually I'm still using it in my old HP. The McAfee VS 7.0 installs flawless over Windows XP, updates inmediately online (slow in dial-up but sure), and keep tracking inmediately of all my Internet moves thanks to the built-in firewall. All this plus a great price (in Amazon) over other retailers (and the mail-in rebate) makes this a great purchase.
Rating: Summary: if there were no stars this software would get it from me. Review: A tragic desicion was my buying this garbage. It took a while to install, and afterwards simply interfered with everything I did on my PC. There even were times it left me flat and needed to be tinkered with in order to maintain Virus Protection. Customer support is a bad joke at McAfee. Why would someone make a poor product then charge you to ask them why? Well McAfee gets paid for answering questions, maybe that's their game. I removed this trash from my PC and I am fine again with another brand that works quietly in the back ground. So the rebates make this McAfee product free, big deal! It's a turkey, so buyer beware of the tempting rebate offers and stay away!
Rating: Summary: Severely unstable, not suitible for low band modems! Review: This program is very unstable, failed to automatically start 70% of the time upon start ups/restarts. It's a CPU hog, slows down everything else, slow to scan, and it's too stupid to notice that my machine does not have an always on connection! That of course was further complicated when I dialed up, the auto update function continually disconnected me, even though I turned it off. As a computer tech the fact that this was allowed out of the building at McAffee is a joke. Furthermore I would recommend PC-cillian 2003, my replacement for this shameful software. Rebate or no, don't waste your money on this.
Rating: Summary: Buyer beware! Review: This program wreaks havoc with my Windows 98 system. It installs easy enough but turning the computer off loses the virus protection and unless you are on top of it you are left wide open you all! The program is severely flawed as is McAfee's idea of customer support. It is also not friendly to dial up connections. Yes, I wasted my money on this program. Please reconsider if you are thinking of making this purchase so you don't waste your's.
Rating: Summary: dont understand where all the bad ratings are coming from Review: mcafee virus scan 7.0 is a great antivirus tool, and it is way better than any of the other versions. I just don't understand where all the bad ratings are coming from. Works great on my win98 os, 64 mg ram, i dont understand why all of you are complaining about this. This is the best version
Rating: Summary: No Problems Review: I recently installed version 7.0 on my PC running Windows XP Professional. The installation was simple and flawless, though you need to keep your internet connection open so that VirusScan can go out and get the latest updates. The program runs unobtrusively in the background, checks e-mail in MS Outlook, etc. You can disable the program from the taskbar when you want to load new software, then scan the softweare later, or you can go into the control panel and turn the program completely off. After rebates, the program is practically free. What more could you want.
Rating: Summary: No Stars. Waste of Money and Time Review: This program freezes my Win98 system. Trying to get tech help is another waste of time and money. Since it freezes my system, I can't get through to their website for help. Try calling the 972 area code phone number printed in the manual, and you get a message that their phone number has changed. Call the new number and have to listen to a long message directing you to the website, then you are given a 900 number to call, and told it will cost you $2.95 per minute for help. Called that number and you get a recording that the call can't be completed as dialled. I have removed it and am now ordering Norton. McAfee should be ashamed.
Rating: Summary: Saved my Butt - Twice Review: OK, everyone knows that you need anti-virus software. So, how did I choose McAfee? Initially, I got it for free after rebates. Not the greatest reason, but it worked for me at the time. But, here's the reason why I would have no problem paying full price (even though I never have since they always have rebates): Story 1: Two years ago I was having problems with my home network and I brought down my firewall. Thing is, I forgot to bring it back up. I continued to work and within two hours I recieved this message from VirusScan: "The program you are attempting to run contains a virus. Are you sure you want to continue?" Turns out someone "found" my PC, copied a virus to my shared folder and tried to run the program remotely. Story 2: Just last week, it caught 3 viruses that was sent to my email account that uses Outlook. I can not compare to Norton, but McAfee has a definite fan.
Rating: Summary: Total Garbage Review: If you are thinking about buying this software, think very hard and then get a different brand. I just spent 11 hours attempting to upgrade my version 5 to version 7 and had nothing but problems. The previous version wouldn't totally uninstall and I had to modify the register. Every time I attempted to download an upgrade it drove my new 3.06GHz Dell into blue screen failure. I never was able to get the upgrade. I am going to buy another brand.
Rating: Summary: Works for Me!!! Great Program!!! Review: I have used this program for over 4 months now. It works much better than version 6 which had alot of bugs in it. I have used Mcafee Virus scan since the early 90's. They have really improved it over the years. This version has a built in firewall program, which is really nice since I use a cable modem to connect to the net. It's very tight, it will tell you what programs are trying to access the Internet. You have complete control of what you allow and not allow. In the beginning it's kinda annoying, because you don't really realize how many programs you have try and access the internet. But once the config process is over or completed for the programs you have loaded and use, it's not so bad. I use eudora for my email client and it has caught so many email viruses it's not funny. I don't even think about the updating my dat files now.....because it does it automatically. I used to be very careful about updating it but now it's done for me and that's one less thing I have to think about. I find it to run so much smoother than version 6, I was about to switch to Norton but I got a good deal with amazon and just tried it one last time......they fixed what ever it was in the previous version that was causing it to hang up and slow down my machine. I guess the biggest reason I wanted to stick with Mcafee before I jumped ship was that Norton charged after one year of dat files. Mcafee still works after one year without having to buy another subscription. I like it and it works for me, so I say go for it if you need a good virus detection program and built in firewall.
