Summary: Even for free--it's too much trouble!
Review: I used VirusScan for some time and had a number of problems with other program's not running. It also prevented internet access at times. I tried to get tech support but they would not help.

Have since used AVG (free program) and Norton AV with no problems.

Summary: stay away that about says it
Review: lack of support, by the way they have a forum, but guess what they don't treat you good at all in there. Was having computer problems for the longest time, windows would crash all the time and stuff. I really didnt know what was causing the problem. I did after I took mcafee Virusscan home edition off my computer. I rated this previously high, but then i found out what they are really like, and the program if it catches anything, probably it wont. Half the time vsmain didnt't respond, and then error messages all over. Listen to me and dont get, youll really regret if you buy this and then are disatified with it. Don't be stupid, and buy the program like i did.

Summary: Planned Obsolescence
Review: Product installed fine, but it appears I cannot download any updates (particularly of virus definitions) without paying more money. Everytime I boot I get at least two different prompts to update, but when I attempt to do so, I get redirected to a mcafee web page with prices for a 1 year subscription to updates. I would think I would get 1 year of updates for free as part of the cost of the product... When I emailed Mcafee about this, I got no response, but a few days later, Satmetrix emailed me asking me to taking a survey about my support experience...grrr.

Summary: Works flawlessly on my Vaio Laptop w/Windows XP Pro
Review: Experience so far in one word: Perfect...VirusScan installed flawlessly on the first try and its user interface is very easy to use. I have not noticed any degradation in performance in my laptop at all. Not a bit. Seems to run as fast as before. The auto update feature works well too, allowing you to schedule times for your computer to automatically check for virus definition updates. That way you always have the most current protection. You get a free year of virus definition updates too.

And VirusScan comes free with a firewall program which seems to work very well. I use it every time I go on the internet and it seems to always pick up port scans or attempts by programs on my computer to send info out (like Real Player automatically trying to check for updates). It then gives you the option to allow or disallow this activity. Very neat. There is also a Tracer feature that enables you to "ping" a website and find out the IP address and owner of the website. A nice feature, but frankly, it's too complex a feature for me and I haven't found the need to use this. Bottom line is, this program is a great value for the money -- even if it didn't have the rebate offers attached to it. The rebate offers make it that much better.

Summary: This product is trouble
Review: Just try calling into any of their so called support desks...that should convince you not to by the prodcut. Maybe talk to a user who has tried to up date dat files...that will convice you not to buy the product. Or finally talk to some one (me) who has had their computer taken over and locked up for seveal days by their inept updates that can not even figure out compatability of versions. Believe me there are products with much better support and just as good functionality.

Summary: useless for me and my computer
Review: I bought this and ended up taking it back because it would not run on my computer. I have Windows ME. After many rounds of installing and uninstalling and restarting my computer and chatting with a technical support person on the McAfee website
and going through the steps for correcting the VSCPOP.DLL error message, this product still would not load and would mess up my screen every time I would try to load it. Very frustrating and time consuming. I'm not a computer genius, but I've never encountered a problem that I haven't been able to fix myself in the last 3 years. If someone is really good at getting all the "bugs" out of a poorly designed program, then this product may work for them. For the rest of us, there's Norton, which is now running perfectly on my pc.

Summary: Try RAV instead
Review: Bought McAfee's VirusScan Online and was very disappointed with it. Since the reviews for Norton AntiVirus weren't positive, I did some research and found RAV. It had a free demo, so I tested it for a month before subscribing. RAV installed on my Win2000 laptop smoothly, and works great! The annual subscription is 30 bucks. I've been using RAV for 2 months, and I love it. Needless to say I dumped McAfee!

Summary: The best virus scanner so far...
Review: First I would like to thank Mcafee for getting rid of that horrible roll over sound. It was the most irritating thing about the last version. Anyway I haven't had one single problem with this program. Installation was a breeze and it runs great. Plus the free updates are a real plus. No stupid subscription based plans like the competition. A very useful tool no computer should be without.

Summary: Slower than the speed of blight
Review: Installed easily enough, and the firewall is always catching port scan attacks (are there really that many?)but McAfee has slowed things down so much on my computer I got to where I disable it most of the time. Having it enabled is about as bad as having a virus. If there are options for only disabling parts of the scan I can't find them (my old program made more sense that way), and their customer service, as you can read in other reviews, is pay-per-problem.
End result...it works, and then becomes your newest problem.

Summary: Not Always Installed Successfully
Review: I upgraded my antivirus software from VirusScan 4.X to Home Edition 7.0 in my laptop runing Windows XP. I uninstalled my old version before upgrading to make sure my system is clean enough. It was installed smoothly at the very first few minutes, and after that two or three errors caught my attention. The most strange thing is that the error messages did not terminate my installation process. I assumed the installation is O.K. because I saw the VirusScan icon appeared on the toolbar. There is no message to indicate the installation failure as well.

After rebooting the machine, the VirusScan hung on my screen for a while. I have to watch it for a minute before it went away. I noticed that my VirusScan can not be started automatically. I have to start it by myself. It worked fine for a few minutes then the VirusScan went down. I hoped my problem will go away after rebooting my machine many times. Unfortunately, it was not. I decided to uninstalled the 7.0 and reinstalled it again. This time it worked properly. I have no idea what's going on with this one.

The installation is not as smoothly as I think. It very hard to tell if you will have any problem during the installtion. Everyone's system environment is totally different after all.
