Summary: The only virus scanner I'll use or recommend.
Review: I've used McAfee virus scanners on and off since 1994. I've used F-Prot, McAfee, and Norton virus scanners, and only McAfee gets it right. Build an engine, let people download DATs, and keep achieving excellence.

The UI is fairly intuitive. McAfee does suffer from a serious
problem with their dialog boxes and UI screens: they are not
resizable, so in viewing traffic or network stats, you are
spending too much scrolling about in a tiny window. That's
where McAfee misses the fifth star.

Aside from that, McAfee has actually scaled back the number of menus, and made it a little easier to manage your advanced settings (where I tend to live in every piece of software I own). I can still block IP addresses, hostnames, scan all incoming downloads and email attachments, set my extensions, from a familiar screen that hasn't changed much since v4.

Coupled with that power (and it has never allowed a virus on my system, eight years of solid detection and prevention), it's also a very stable release. Version six botched a few things on my system, and was hard to unload. It also suffered from a case of the "stupids", insisting my license expired when it clearly hadn't. Version seven fixes that, and aside from a bad case of "unripened install software", it's been running well. It certainly hasn't conflicted with any software I run on Win2k and
WinXPPro boxes.

The best part of VS7 is the included firewall. It doesn't block ads, it doesn't have the natural intuitive feel or settings options of some other products but it's free, it's easy to configure, and it keeps you safe. It's what I recommend for casual computer use and home users, without qualification.

Summary: My faith in McAfee has been restored!
Review: This version (7.0) is much, much better than its immediate predecessor (6.0).

Easy loading, easy updating from the McAfee website, no problems on start-up.

Good product - five stars.

Summary: Pure Junk
Review: I bought this software because Norton antiVirus interfered with musicmatch jukebox streaming music. After I installed Mcafee virusscan 7 , my computer ( Dell Dimension 8200 with 1 GB of Ram and a Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghx Intel chip), slowed to a near crawl . Any program, any webpage( on a DSL connection), took much longer to load. Startup and shutdown , also slowed to a crawl. After uninstalling , and then error check and defragmenting my hard drive I am back to my normal speedy self.
Clearly this can not happen to everyone, BUT Beware.

Summary: Scans faster than any other product
Review: As with all software you better wait for an updated version before buying the stuff. I don't understand many of the negative reviews below.

I did - I bought the VirusScan 7.02 version and I loved it! Used Norton previously but this really slowed down my PC when scanning (use ME as OS). I fancy the new Security Center as it tells me in a sec if my protection is up-to-date. It did not fail to detect my firewall from blackice! Well done!

Summary: Pay more to cure viruses that get through!!
Review: I bought this & had nothing but problems. Computer freeze, computer crashes. Now to top it off, 2 viruses got through. McAfees response? If I purchase their upgrade they'll send me the cure. Why didnt the virus scan catch the virus??

Plain & simple-this does not work.

My ISP gave me a free cure on Klez & bigboy worm.
I uninstalled McAfee & my computer is back to normal.

McAfee support is more money hungry than customer oriented.

More important,
McAfee's products cannot be trusted,
they do not work.

Summary: Piece of Junk
Review: Installed both VirusScan and the included firewall. Had to uninstall the firewall almost immediatley in order to use the internet. Performance of my computer declined until the last straw - had to reboot three times in less than 30 minutes. Uninstalled McAfee and have had no problems since. This is unfortunate as I've been using McAfee products since 1991.

Summary: Installation nightmare
Review: I purchased Version 7.0 to replace my V6.0 on my Windows XP system. I could not get 7.0 to install.
An error message came up "un-install older version of VirusScan".
I uninstalled version 6.0, but still got the error message.
After looking on McAfee tech site I found that I needed to modify my Windows Registry (very, very dangerous).

This software installation is way too difficult.
Version 7.0 should have removed the older version in its installation operation, or at least over-written it.
The Version 7.0 is now in my un-usable software bin.

I think I'll try Nortons Anti Virus.

Summary: This software is TERRRIBLE!
Review: I installed this program onto my computer according to the instructions. Immediately afterwards my computer stopped functioning. I could not use the internet. When I had 3 other windows open my computer showed all 3 simultaneously. They only give you 2 options for technical support: 1 is an email option which I could not use because I could not use the internet. ... I uninstalled the program and threw it away! Fortunately my computer is now back to normal.

Summary: Average to poor Virus Scanner
Review: I work in a lab environment with over 50 computers so I know a thing or two about viruses and virus scanners. I recently bought this product for my parents computer which is an aging cyrix 300. In the lab we use a similar product to this with much faster machines and I have personally used McAfee in the past with good results.

This product has made me change my mind about McAfee. Sure, there are some nice features like the automatic virus definition updates and email scan, but this product performs very poorly on an older machine. It takes several seconds to load on boot and makes the machine perform significantly slower in almost all operations. In fact, it makes it perform so poorly that mp3s often skip for my parents which is simply unacceptable.

The only reason I give it 3 stars is because I know that my parents are protected against viruses and the automatic update feature makes their lives easier. However, my future virus scanner purchases will likely be with Norton or Panda.

Summary: Does a good job
Review: I've been using McAfee VirusScan 7.02 for about two months now, and it has performed fine. No freeze ups or crashes at all. This latest version is basically the same as version 6, with a few minor under-the-hood improvements. Visually it looks almost exactly the same. McAfee VirusScan is a resource hog, and will noticably slow down older, slower computers (ie anything slower than 600Mhz). So keep that in mind.

Before installing version 7.02, you need to manually uninstall any previous versions of McAfee VirusScan on your computer. That is important. Afterwards, reboot your PC, delete any TEMP files, run a scan disk, run a disk defrag, reboot your computer again, close down any unnecessary programs, and then insert the McAfee CD-ROM to begin. If you're not satified with the reviews for version 7.02, you can always wait until this summer when version 8.0 is released.
