Rating: Summary: Worketh not on xp! Review: I have had this for a couple of years and it has worked okay - just like to say I recently upgraded to xp, tried to reinstall - and got told Systemworks was not designed for xp. Doh! Oh yeah, the antivirus is the best part but there is not much else that will make an earthshattering help to your PC. In fact Norton is famous for slowing your computer.
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PROGRAM EVER!! Review: If I could give this ZERO stars, I would.
I installed Norton Symantec System Works 2001 in two PCs with two different operating systems: Windows 98 and Windows XP. As another reviewer noted, the System Works will not work in Windows XP, only the antivirus program will.
I got my free year of antivirus upgrades, and then got nonstop popups to pay $40 a year to continue the upgrades. Within DAYS after my free year ended, I got hit hard with viruses in my XP PC (fortunately, the other one wasn't networked to it when that happened).
Since some ebay sellers were selling Norton antivirus 2004 NEW for only $10 with shipping, rather than pay $80 ($40 x 2) a year just for upgrades, I thought I'd buy the newer version for $10 and spend the $70 I saved on paying bills, which I did.
I tried to install Norton 2004 over Norton 2001 in both PCs and was given an error message that I had to uninstall 2001 before I could install 2004.
I tried to uninstall 2001, and in BOTH computers, when I went to add/remove programs and clicked on Norton 2001, I got a pop up window asking me if I really wanted to uninstall Netscape (the program right above Norton in my add/remove)! I finally clicked yes in Windows XP, and sure enough, Netscape - not Norton - was uninstalled. I then went back to add/remove programs and clicked on Norton antivirus, and got an error message that the pathway could not be found. I then had to go to the trouble to reinstall Netscape, etc., ,and I still could not uninstall 2001 or install 2004 on either PC.
If this problem had only happened in one PC, then I would have blamed the PC or operating sysytem. But the fact that the uninstall problem happened in TWO PC's with TWO different OS's, tells me that Norton has done this deliberately to try and FORCE me to pay the $40 a year upgrade fee.
I DO NOT DO BUSINESS with any company that hijacks my PC and holds it hostage just to get me to buy products from them and this includes Norton. I am now going to have to pay a computer technician to get rid of everything to do with Norton/Symantec in both PCs, and if I could, I'd sue Norton to cover the costs of the repairs.
STAY AWAY FROM NORTON AND THEIR ILLEGAL HIJACKING OF PCS!!
Rating: Summary: Worketh not on xp! Review: The ability of this program to be able to with one click check and repair problems with your computer is good. The Antivrus 2001 portion is the best feature. The only difference between the regular and pro versions is the Pro has Winfax and Ghost. It you want to send faxes out suing this program the WinFax would do that job. The Norton Ghost Norton Ghost 2001 provides the tools for cloning hard disks, creating backup images, and restoring data. It is for the experienced user. I already had a fax program on my computer so the pro version was not what I need. I have the regular version. Beware that you need to check to make sure you do not have programs installed on your computer that will conflict with the Systemworks program. I use a program called "Go Back" which allows me to be able to revert my hard drive to a time in the past if I erased a file by mistake, added a program that does not work or there are system problems. When I installed the Systemworks everything was fine until I started the Defrag of the hard drive. I would get a blue screen come up on the computer saying it could not write to the hard drive. This would happen when I tried to save files or access files. In essence the hard drive was damaged. The "Go Back" and Systemworks write to the section of the hard drive and that is why there is a conflict.I was able to contact my computer manufacturer and they told me to remove Systemworks and disable the "Go Back". I then had to defrag my hard drive, and enable the "Go Back". I did have an Antivrus 2000 program that I was able to put back on with no trouble. I DID NOT reinstall the Systemworks and since then it works fine. The is no notice on the package saying there could be conflicts with other programs. My system requirements far exceed the recommendations listed on the package. Be cautious about installing this product. The stand alone Antivirus feature can be purchased by itself. If you have Antivirus 2000 you do not need to purchase the complete product. You can get an annual subscription where you can update the virus protection on a regular basis. It is highly recommended that if you do decide to purchase this product you need to backup your files before installing. You should also back up your files on a regular basis. This product does make changes to your system.
