Summary: Problems !
Review: NSW 2004 Disabled my Earthlink Total Access. After a week of having to do a quick restore on my Windows 98, my computer sloooowing way down, improper shutdowns, freezing screens, etc. etc., I seemed to get it all working. But what an unnecessary load of grief!!! I un-installed NSW 2004 then re-installed with a custom installation leaving out the Password Manager. This may have been the problem. My internet access was functioning again after I did this. I will probably be a lot more careful before choosing a product and read reviews, be aware of return policies. I jumped the gun on this one. Norton got the best of me this time, but there won't be a next. I will be watching out for a better product/company.

Summary: Great program
Review: This is the best program I have ever purchased. I have 5 computers and it keeps them all at their best performance. I have never had any problems. Don't listen to the person that said there is a W32.SymantecNSW2004Pro.Worm. That's 100% grade A B/S. It's a resault of a lack of real computer knowledge. I searched multiple virus databases including mcafee, symantec, and 25 others and I found NO REAL VIRUS! That is a hoax. There used to be a supposed virus that put itself in your windows folder. It had an icon of a teddy bear and was named setdebug. You delete that file and you are gonna have of heck of a time trying to fix it, thats a required system file. So don't listen to every non-since thing you hear and do the reasearch yourself. As for all you McAfee people lookin' to switch, this is a good choice. I fix computers for my friends all the time, I have had to wipe 5 viruses off Daves computer. You know why? He uses McAfee, updates it every week. I'm sorry to say but McAfee just isn't as good protection. Only virus probelms I have ever encountered are on McAfee users. And another thing, I bought a new Dell about 4 months ago. System works found and fixed over 200 errors, fresh out of the box! No joke, Mcafee came on it sucked way more memory than Norton. My old win 98 was faster (p3 733mhz vs. p4 2.8ghz) thats sad. With norton that thing is runing a lot faster, without it I would have been screwed. If your having memory problems, uses START -> Run -> msconfig and download adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) and run some scans with clean sweep and One button checkup. Don't let other people tell you lies about products, get your info from a relyable source and always check it.

Summary: Good virus scanning, same old Norton utils, bad password mgr
Review: I should give this 2-stars, but overall the product suite is generally easy to use and has many useful features. The virus scanning just works. If you are upgrading from an older version with an active subscription, expect some hassle in getting NOrton to extend your subscription. I eventually got mine extended. The utilities are basically the same ones that have been around for the last 5 years. But I got this for the password manager. BUYER BEWARE! Although the pwd manager seems somewhat easy to use, it is FAR FROM PERFECT. It frequently fails to fill in web page usernames and passwords that I have told it about before. I have had to reset the manager many times, retraining it each time for all web sites that I login to. When it works, it is great. But if you intend to rely upon this as a "set it and forget it" type of product, then be forewarned. Keep your old passwords and usernames around even after you start using this. You will likely need to type them in again.

Summary: Sticking With It
Review: I have used Norton products for the past few years and have been very satisfied. It is for this reason that I decided to stay with Norton when I updated my utilities suite. Shortly after installing SystemWorks 2004, I started having problems with my computer. The time it took for my computer to boot up seemed to double. I received several error messages regarding Windows and, finally, Windows wouldn't start at all. I had to re-install my operating system (Windows XP). I had problems printing, programs would hang, CDs and DVDs wouldn't run correctly, and the music I had downloaded to my computer several months ago wouldn't play properly. There is nothing wrong with my computer; it's not even a year old yet and it is a powerful system. I had everything checked on it just to be sure and the computer itself is fine. It took a while to figure it out but Norton Antivirus seems to be the culprit. No matter what settings I use, the computer will not operate properly as long as Norton Antivirus is enabled. I have finally got to the point where I can go online and work on one or two documents with the antivirus enabled, but usually I have to disable it for the computer to work as it should. Playing CDs or DVDs, or listening to music is not possible with the antivirus enabled. Of course, with Norton disabled, that means I can't go online; that just wouldn't be safe. So, I have to completely disconnect (remove the plug from the computer itself) from the Internet and then disable Norton for everything to run smoothly. I'm not a computer whiz so I don't know exactly what the problem is but I have learned to work around it. I thought about switching to McAfee but I truly don't believe McAfee is as good a product as Norton. Norton Utilities works like a charm when it comes to finding and fixing system and disk problems. Norton Cleansweep is great at removing unneeded files. I access the internet through my cable service so I don't need Connection Keep Alive which prevents dropped dial-up connections. As for Password Manager, I don't keep any personal, confidential information on my computer, not even passwords. Nothing is foolproof so if a hacker does manage to get to my computer, he won't find anything interesting. And even though Norton Antivirus is giving me problems, I still think it is a great tool at finding and removing threats from your PC. I'm hoping that Norton will be able to work out the glitches with SystemWorks 2004 and that everything will be back on track for SystemWorks 2005. In the meantime, I'm just living with a slow computer and a few hassles.

Summary: Can't Use My USB Card Reader Anymore
Review: I have Norton Systemworks 2003 and it worked well on my XP computer. Tried to install Sytemworks 2004 3 times and everytime, I could not use my USB card reader anymore. I do not have the time to fiddle with the settings to get this to work. I cannot even just install the Antivirus portion only without it uninstalling the entire Systemworks 2003 and not just updating the Antivirus. I am now back to 2003 and wondering if I should go with McAfee.

Summary: I'll Stick with SystemWorks 2003, SW 2004 is a Time Sink!
Review: Norton SystemWorks (SW) 2003 worked like a charm for me but I'm at my wits end with SW 2004. I've reinstalled SW 2004 for the third time in 36 hours and I still experience problem... After a "successful" installation/activation Norton Password Manager (part of SW 2004) invokes the Windows installer dialog asking for the SW installation CD. Well I'm away from my office right now and I don't have the CD with me so I'm cancelling repeated installation attempts each time I browse to a new Web page! I don't know if this is a side-effect of Symantec's new product activation policy but I've had it! Tomorrow I will return my copy of SW 2004 to Costco for a full refund. It's ironic that they will send my $30 upgrade rebate (I'm very prompt about sending out rebate requests) after I've returned the product for a full refund. Hey Symantec, the idea behind activation is to alienate pirates, not your paying customers! I'll stick with my flawless, trusty, and legitimate copy of Norton SW 2003. UPDATE (2003-11-09): I have not returned SystemWorks 2004, yet. With the exception of Password Manager, all components of SW are working so I opted for patience. Indeed Symantec is having troubles with activation (Google: Symantec Activation Problem). No thanks to Symantec I found their page providing unpaid support from Symantec. I sent their tech support (in India) screen shots and config info hoping to aid them in solving their activation problems. UPDATE (2004-01-19): About a week after my last update (see above) Symantec LiveUpdate downloaded an update to Password Manager. Since then everything has been working great. I really enjoy the Password Manager and Norton Antivirus' does a great job of keeping spyware/adware off my system. A monthly scan with AdAware only finds two or three tracking cookies where it used to find much more. Getting here was certainly a frustrating experience and if I had known the hassle I would not have upgraded. But now that I'm enjoying SystemWorks 2004 I would not want to downgrade. I'm upgrading my star rating of this product from one star to four.

Summary: Keeps Windows Working
Review: Norton Systemworks has a lot of upgraded features than the previous version I had (2002). It has a password manager that autofills passwords you want saved. It also repairs windows problems that occur when installing new software or moving files around. This is a great buy if you want to keep your system running good for a long time.

Summary: Worst of all !!.. Could not use since activation ..
Review: This is worst release I think. Once I activated ( which was a painful process because Key was Invalid ) I was never able to use this once.
I Cannot believe they came with such a poor activation method which is painful and will never work and In fact, I changed my outlook setting... got a clue ??..
I do not recommend Norton Systemworks Pro 2004 at all. Stick with 2003 or better get Zonealarm with antivirus or Trenmicro.

Summary: Boom to Bust in 3 Versions or Less!
Review: In years past, I would never run a Mac or PC system without Norton Utilities or SystemWorks. Things started looking bad with NSW 2002 and 2003... Very little improvement, higher prices. With NSW 2004, Symantec has effectively killed any reason for anyone to use this now-useless software. If you want hard drive imaging, buy Ghost standalone. If you want anti-virus protection, buy Norton AV standalone. Stay away from NSW. Even if you can manage to get the product activated (I couldn't), it will bog down your system with tons of memory-resident and background applications.

Summary: NSW2004 - Will destroy your system
Review: I upgraded from NSW2003 to 2004 because the av subscription
ran out. What a mistake. Will never purchase another
symantec product again, ever. I'm moving to mcAffee
when this subscription runs out.
First of all, speed disk 2004 goes to infinite cpu.
You typically can't shut down. Either way, your
system will no longer boot. You're dead. You'd better
have an emergency backup restore in place, ready and able.
Speaking of emergency restore -- the ghost that comes
with 2004 is the same 2003 version. Regardless, ghost
restore only works if you restore to the same drive and
partition from whence the image was backed up from.
Furthermore, the documentation leads you to believe that
you can upgrade from 2003 to 2004 in place. Don't believe it.
You have to fully uninstall 2003 and then, after many
reboots and manual clean outs in betwee, only then can
you install 2004;
Don't buy this, or you will be sorry. And, you'd better
have a backup of your system in place to restore on
emergency, because speed disk 2004 WILL CORRUPT YOUR
SYSTEM AND YOU WILL NOT BOOT!!!! Send it back.
