Summary: Lucky I was able to uninstall
Review: Obviously people have different experiences, but here's mine: my Win 98 machine has developed trouble, and thought NSW would help. However, once I installed NSW things got *worse*. System went from intermittently keystroke-responsive to barely keystroke-responsive. When I tried to run NSW I typically got an error message, "You must restart your computer to run this application," even though I'd been through numerous restarts already. In the end I was grateful that the system stayed responsive long enough for me to uninstall NSW and get back to where I was before.

Not to mention that the documentation is like Windows itself: user-friendly labels slapped on poorly-prepared, maze-like content. Be prepared to read the sentence "For more information, turn to page xxx" until your eyes water.

Summary: fails to back up hard drive
Review: I have used Norton systemmworks to keep my hard drive operating. I backed up my hard drive 3 times with Ghost but when I needed to restore the hard drive, each of the ghost images failed with an error 437. There was no warning that the images might not be able to restore the hard drive and once you begin to restore the image, the hard drive is wiped clean. AVOID THIS PRODUCT. AVOID THE GHOST BACKUPS.

Summary: It¿s a tool, not a magic wand.
Review: I've had very good luck with Norton since way back in the DOS days. My System Works, works very well, but like most programs I don't let them run my machine, I run them. I'm no computer geek, but my PC isn't a toaster and I have to use my head. Norton utilities is usually one of the first things I install on a new machine. But I don't have any part of System Works running in the background, with the exception of the anti-virus. I use what I want, when I want and then turn it off. Over the years, I find this works best. The speed-disk utility and the Windoctor utility are the ones I use the most. They are worth the usual discount price by themselves.

Norton isn't perfect, and the documentation must be followed (turn off all that background junk that the machine has running) carefully, but like any good tool, once I've learned to use it, it works consistently, reliably and without glitches. In well over a decade and a half of using Norton utilities of one flavor or another, I've never had occasion to call customer support, so I can't address that issue.

Summary: WinDoctor ROCKS
Review: This product is worth it for WinDoctor alone! It repairs Windows operating system problems and works like a charm. The only other items I use are the antivirus program and the firewall. I never use Cleansweep because it can delete your very old files.

Summary: Evaluation version is miserable already
Review: Installed evaluation version available from symantecs website. Before installing, it performs a system test and always freezes my machine at about 32000 files.
A progress bar is also missing. Scanning takes about 1.5 hours so far, but it won't tell how many files are left to scan.

Summary: As good as it gets! or qdcspi.dll - resolved
Review: After reading reviews from whiners, I am reminded of the DOS days pre-Windows and the fact that 20-somethings write this software AND the manual ... I suspect the whiners are from this same generation. YES, Norton only warns of WinME drivers, etc. that might interfere with SystemWorks 2004 installation ("get the newest ones")WHEN they should have said "install from a Clean Boot" (otherwise known as Selective Startup - ref. msconfig) ... and saved everyone an hour!

So stay in the dark ages if you are lazy, but I was just exposed to the real devil and it's not the angel Norton who also has shield & sword in Ghost & GoBack - it's Microsoft, whose trusted Update downloaded and "installed" video drivers last week only to result in Explorer.exe crashing "reload windows" YIKES and did sysrestore or sysreg come to my aid? Noooooo.

Thank You Norton!

Summary: Norton is the Anti-Christ
Review: Don't buy this software. I tried to uninstall Norton Anti-virus

from my system before install of NSW 2004 but it insists that a

version of anti-virus is still there and will not install.

Installation locks up EVERY time . Save yourself anguish by

anything else ... O no Nada tech support until u cough up

30 bucks.... Unless u are a programmer and feel like editing

your registry

Summary: I don't understand why people had problems...
Review: I read some rants here and wanted to comment I didn't have any problem at all with install. An upgrade from SystemWorks 2003 was completely seamless. For people with pre 2002 version the manual on page 47 said you should uninstall first... newer version are automatic. Either here or when combined rebates from places like Fry's, this is a cheap way to renew your antivirus subscription that is annual. No worries... skip the bad review and pick it up...

Summary: Norton Found 149 problems on my system.
Review: I recommend this software. I bought NSW 2004 because my system is older, has gotten slower over the last 5 years and, having upgraded and deleted a number of programs over the life of my machine, there was a lot of reside in the registry. The package installed cleanly, activated w/o a hitch, installed missing links and sped up my system considerably. NSW detected and correct 149 "problems".

Utilities can optimize the hard drive and place the most used programs at the "front" and the least used at the "back". This sped up my system considerably- much better than just a Windows Defrag.

Note that if your e-mail uses Secure Socket Layers (POP 3 SSL) NORTON SW antivirus does not support scanning incoming or outgoing e-mail (you will have to disable the e-mail scan function). Also, read the section on "Preparing your Computer" on page 45 (as another reviewer has mentioned). I found the package to be worth every penny!

I found the package to be worth every penny! Would have gotten 5 stars except for the non-support of POP3 SSL.

Summary: Norton System Works
Review: NORTON SYSTEM WORKS 2004 DOES NOT EVEN DESERVE ONE STAR !!
Six years ago I stopped using Norton Anti-virus program when it was rendered inoperable due to a virus ...
I purchased Pc-cillin and not only was the one virus found but so was six trojans that Norton let get onto my computer and never detected.
I have not had any virus' or trojans, etc in the six years I have used Pc-cillin.
This year and with a new computer I decided to try Norton System Works.
I have only been able to use my Norton System Works for one month and a half.

My computer began to slow down in a major way.
I disabled Norton Anti-virus and reinstalled my pc-cillin of which I still have a current script ...
Pc-cillin found four trojans that Norton allowed onto my computer and Norton never detected them.
Now four days after I find these, my Norton windoctor will not work and I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it still will not work.

I have had to totally uninstall Norton System Works as I cannot seem to get anyone in tech support ... how convenient for them...
I paid 80 dollars for one months use.
I would try to sell my copy but frankly I do not think I would want to rip anyone off in such a way.
I will chalk my money up as a quick course in learning never to use any Norton Product ever again ...

To give a quick run down of the Norton System Works 2004 CD ...

So this costed me 80 bucks ...
I do not know what to do about my WinDoctor not working any more and even though I will not use Norton 2004 anti-virus program as it has proven to be useless and I have reinstalled my Pc-cillin. I still did like having the WinDoctor because it keeps old entries and junk out of the registry and fixes little errors that get onto your computer as you install, uninstall, add, delete things so on and so forth ...

Anti-virus program, GoBack, WinDoctor, Safe Clean Sweep, Disk Optmization ...
I guess basically these are the main features but a few other small features are there too but not important enough to mention ...

First of all I couldn't use GoBack ...
The GoBack from Norton System Works 2004 is useless as it will not run on my system and the tech support area of Norton System Works on this issue was to disable GoBack feature or uninstall ...

Second of all the Anti-Virus program allowed me to get four trojans within one month and it never detected them and I had to reinstall my Pc-cillin which found and deleted them.

Third of all I kept having to go to restore stuff that Safe Clean Sweep would delete because it was constantly deleting things that I need to operate my system fully.

Fourth of all I have a better Disk Optimizer than Norton's which is PerfectDisk which is a defragmenter and optimizer and it is one of the best for XP.

And Last to mention is WinDoctor which was the only feature left ...
Which is now inoperable for some unknown reason and continues to lock up and the send error report to Microsoft window pops up for me to send in report.
I have RegMechanic which works about the same as WinDoctor but I admit WinDoctor seems to correct more errors ...
BUT ... It now no longers works.

SO That means I paid 80 bucks and have nothing but a worthless Norton System Works 2004 CD ...

Summary:
* PLEASE NOTE: If you want tech support from these people ...
Hang it up because you will be very fortunate if you are able to get this of which you have paid for.

BUYER BEWARE !!!
