Summary: Norton Internet Security 2002
Review: This is a very good product. I would never buy McAfee. It kept locking up my 98 computer. So I installed Norton and never had 1 problem. All I did was waste money on McAfee. Now I bought a new computer with XP. It had norton already installed. It is A great product.

Summary: Bloated, inflexible and unsupported
Review: I'm still testing Security 2002 on my XP Home addition so my opinion may change over time. I bought IS 2002 mainly for the parental control. I shouldn't have bothered. The control is entirely unacceptable. Yes, you can pick sites to block and applications but you cannot limit time on the internet or chats. It either blocks everything choosen all the time or not at all. So, if I want to restrict Jr.'s online use right after school, but allow access after his homework is done I have to go into configuration and reset everything each time. Both NetNanny and Cyber Sitter allow you to set access times. I've also heard that IS doesn't block access very well either. One thing I found curious is that one of the default blocked catagories of websites in the parental control is "Religious". I'm not sure what the rational is behind that, but don't we want children to learn about religions?
The instructions are vague and incomplete. Most of what IS does can be done by various freeware available on the net.

Summary: Does what it's supposed to 80% of the time, but lacks polish
Review: This is the second version of NIS I own. Like the previous one, the software firewall and NAV do a good job most of the time. I say most because, once in a while (esp. with the firewall), it fails to exhibit the right behavior.

For example, the firewall has a nasty habit of forgetting the rules you already set up for a specific application. This version is much improved in this regard than the 2001 version, but it sometimes still asks you to set up access rules for an application -- as common as IE! -- repeatedly. I don't know what's got into its "head." I discovered that, for one, Norton can't distinguish between the DOS-style filename and Windows-style long filename, so it thinks it's two separate applications. But there are also other cases where the behavior simply cannot be explained.

In addition to the firewall and anti-virus utilities, NIS 2002 comes with parent control (I didn't install this) and ad-blocking. Ad-blocking is a joke. It worked the first day I installed it, and stopped working after that.

These little things exemplify the problem with many Norton products of late. They are basically solid, but they have a lot of little annoying "features" -- such as not uninstalling themselves cleanly -- that really make users both love and hate them. Sloppy programming, perhaps because they outsource part of the job to India? I don't know. I just hope Symantec does some homework and make their products more solid and polished. Indeed, if ZoneAlarm did not intermittently and mysteriously break my Internet access, I wouldn't have bought this upgrade.

Summary: Not Worth It
Review: Its good protection, but the program's a little bulky and excessive. The biggest problem: Subscriptions cost $$$ A YEAR!!! Now thats excessive. Might as well buy a new program every year. What happened to $ subscriptions? Its a RIP-OFF, don't bother.

Summary: 4-in-1 AT A FAIR PRICE
Review: The greatest strength of "Norton Internet Security 2002" lies not in its capabilities, but in its reasonable price. The well-integrated components (i.e: AntiVirus, Personal Firewall, Privacy Control, and Parental Control) combine to make an attractive one-pack bargain. They work fine too! Indeed, you will observe some flaws in the software, but forgive Norton, and take solace in the fact that (unlike Microsoft) Norton doesn't make your wallet bleed before you can acquire her products.

Summary: Works well....
Review: I installed Norton Internet Security with my Windows ME system. All is working well. I've recently switched to a cable modem and within a day of installing it the software detected an intrusion. Whether or not it was a "true" intrusion, I don't know...but what I do know if that a firewall is a must.

Summary: Norton Internet Security 2002
Review: The Norton Internet Security 2002 is a great product. The
security alerts are informative. But unlike Mcaffes firewall,it
does not give proxy info. about the attacking computer or allow
you to trace the location of the attacking computer or to report
the attack. The privacy control is ok for hiding your e-mail
from websites, however, the cookie blocking fuction (double click
cookies)is ok,but if you have I.E. 6.0 then this function is
unneeded. The ad blocking fuction(in my opinion) is not as good
as the freeware ad blockers. IT will cause some web pages not to
load at all. There should have been more ways to adjust the ad
blocking than just to enable and disable, and the instructions
were way to complex to fix this problem. So I've disabled it and
went back to freeware ad blocking. I can't comment on the
parental control since I choose not to install it. All this
considered, I would still recomend this product.

Summary: Awesome Program
Review: I recently purchased this software and I have recieved no problems unlike some of the reviews here. It's an easy all-in-one security package! It walks you through every section for set up. I love the little alerts that pop up when an outsider attempts to intrude my laptop. It even performs live updates on virus protection and many more! Must buy for PC users.

Summary: Fatal Parental Control Flaw
Review: I use this product with Windows ME and XP. In many ways, it is a great product--if only it did not fail me in the one area for which I selected it--parental control. Much of the time, the Parental Control feature does not bar my children from visiting restricted web sites. Symantec admits on their support site that they are aware of the problem, but offers no substantive solution. That flaw is substantial to a home with children. For that critical reason, I don't recommend this product to families.
