Rating: Summary: Great productivity tool Review: Don't let the secret out, but VMWare might be the best productivity tool released in years. Install multiple instances of operating systems, and run them in a protected environment simultaneously. Practice advance networking techniques with fully workable virtual LAN connections. This products emulates nearly everythin-- from the BIOS boot screen, to device drivers, to suspend mode, to video emulation. I use VMWare as a hosting platform for various needs. When I need to apply security patches, I can just reboot the virtual host instead of the physical PC. Also I can test new patches on a virtual OS before unleashing it on the production workstation. For those pieces of software you just can't get to run right under your present OS, run them under their intended OS virtually. Create another layer of security by running web services under virtual servers that can be taken off- and online as needed. Web developers can test across multiple browsers and platforms instantly. The networking possibilities are only as limited as your imagination. VMWare works great in a testing environment, but of course all this magic requires memory and processing power. I'd recommend at least a 512MB RAM and 1Gig processor system for realisitc results. Now if you will excuse me, I have to check on a couple of virtual servers...

Rating: Summary: VMware, still the best Review: Great improvements in speed and usability make this edition of VMware the best yet. Finally, relative pathnames for the configuration files and virtual drives, no more editing the config file every time you pull a VM down from the file server or move it to another computer. Simply move the parent directory of your VM to any location or any other machine and it will run as though nothing has changed. If you're a current VMware user, this is worth the upgrade cost. If you're new to virtual machine technology make sure you give this product a very close look.

Rating: Summary: Poor Implementation and Support Review: I bought this software hoping to run SuSE Linux on top of Windows XP Pro so that I would not have to partition and dual-boot. Unfortunately, the product crashes everytime, during the boot. I called them about this, and they instructed me to wait for version 3.2, that the bug would be fixed. I waited for 3 weeks, and they allowed me to upgrade (since all 3.0 serial numbers work on 3.2). However, the bug is still not fixed, and because of their support policy, I can no longer get support (people rip on MS, but at least they will support their product!). So, now I am stuck with a product that doesn't work, and no one to tell me how to get it to work. I have hacked at this thing for about 30 hours, and still no luck. For all those who want to do cross-platform networking (virtual machining), DON'T USE THIS PRODUCT! They won't support it, and they know it doesn't work. Take it from a guru...
Rating: Summary: Oh, This Is GOOD Alright, Unless You're Victimized By It! Review: I'll be writing my own lengthy article or book, providing I ever find a cure to my current nightmare, and this product will surely serve as a centerstage piece. Four months ago, I knew very little about Windows, my system, broadband, viruses, and absolutely nothing about "virtual machines." I had experienced a bad year with my home system, having had to replace both the harddrive and motherboard on a system only one year old. My CPU was running at 100% during the entire time and despite my lame efforts, I could not seem to explain nor remedy the problem. It didn't make sense. Also, despite running constantly updated antivirus (both McAfee and Norton), antiadware (Pest Patrol), and firewalls (McAfee, Tiny, Sygate), I seemed to be plagued with exposure to viruses and other inexplicable "gremlins" in my Gateway system. In mid-December '02, a landmark problem occurred. I was "hit" by a RAT (another roadhazard I had never heard of before) and went about a tedious process of trying to extract seemingly endless tentacles throughout my C-drive. It was then I discovered that my entire system was chockful of ".dll" files - hundreds! - dating back to August when the motherboard was replaced. (I later discovered, through my Master's accidental exposure of his "virtual files" that programs I had installed and thought to have uninstalled a year ago were still present!). Suffice to say, through the very slow, agonizing, and unwelcomed course of self-learning, I came to discover my system was controlled - COMPLETELY CONTROLLED - by a hacker, and a very sophisticated one, at that. Thanks to this wonderfully inventive program, that seems to work marvelously, I have spent countless hours, unending frustration and struggle, valuable time and money (it so happens I am in a desperate search for a new job, having been unemployed now for 14 months; a fact well known to my hacker and in which he seems to derive enjoyment from blocking my attempts to send resumes, receive email, etc.), and as I write this review, there is no end in sight. The likes of Gateway, Pest Patrol (perhaps the most infuriating), McAfee, Symantech and, of course, Microsoft, have provided no help whatsoever, or denials of responsibility, or simple disbelief, or "canned," in appropriate computer-generated email responses. The "classic" was a Microsoft response to my "emergency" email in which their encouraging response was "it will be 14 days before we will be able to respond to your request." So, "hats off" to VmWare and the proficiency in its program that has caused me unimaginable loss. I am working constantly to track down my Polish hacker, affiliated with "Network Solutions" (a Verisign company - no wonder all his programs are "certified" by Verisign!), quite possibly associated with "jantar.org" and "sulima.org" and a possibly non-existent group called "Capital Intellect" from Boston, makers of "Winferno" and "SecureIE." [I believe one of my purposes has been to serve as a laboratory rat in development of these products]. You will hear more from me, as will VmWare, Microsoft, Pest Patrol and their whole lot.
Rating: Summary: Perfect for lab use/home use/ MCSE studies! nothing like it Review: I've used VMWARE before when it was still in its version 2 release. VMWARE by far is one of the most important tool/software I have at work and at home. Our company mainly use this to "build & scrap" Windows 2000 installs when we need to test application functionality. Windows 2000 Clustering? no problem. You can setup clustered servers under VMWARE using Windows Advanced server and it will work like it's supposed to. For someone who doesn't have that many spare machines to test with, this is a godsend. Testing service packs is one of the reasons why we needed this software without having to come up with new servers. I've installed all Backoffice servers and not have a single problem running under VMWARE. The capability to add multiple network adapter is very useful in cases where I need to test Windows-based firewalls. In conclusion, I think this software will save you (up to a certain point) from buying additional hardware for testing and preventing corruption of existing production servers prior to testing an application.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: What can I say about this product? Well, for starters I'd have to say this product is a must for any IT professional that needs to work with multiple OS's simultaneously. This product helped me work with Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows XP all on the same system. I only have 2 system's at home and I needed 2 servers and 1 client workstation to complete some of the lab exercises in my Windows 2000 Server lab book. Well instead of purchasing a new system or building one from scratch I decided to purchase this product based on a recommendation from a friend who is also in the IT field and to my amazement I was very impressed. Each virtual machine is equivalent to having another PC and they each have a complete, unmodified operating system, a unique network address, and all the hardware attached to the system. I recommend this product highly because without it, I'm not sure If I would have passed my MCSE exams.
