Rating: Summary: Do not buy this software Review: My company purchased VM (Windows, Linux, Solaris and iNet clients) as a VCS for a development project with over fifty developers. We strongly regret buying it. It has a very clumsy interface, it is exceedingly slow, it is very buggy. It is in fact a great disapointment (considering how critical it is to our organisation). It claims security, but it has only the most basic security: all users need write access to all archives to work in the repository. You cannot stop a user from deleting a file without revoking the 'add file' privilege (the two are a single privilege in the access list). Merant has good technical support, and YOU'LL NEED IT (we did) but their website is full of ASP errors. Their training people don't return calls. In VM, Workspaces are often corrupted, we've had nothing but problems with it since the beginning. Our developers are screaming to get something that actually -is- industry standard like CVS. We thought we were being smart by buying a commercial product with support instead of using a free one. Not so. CVS is ten times the product this is (and faster) and 100% cheaper (you can buy third party tech support for CVS anyway). All developers, QA, and CM employees in my company want to move back to CVS (but we have to wait until the end of our SDLC). As a Configuration Manager/Release Engineer myself, I consider this to be a very, very poor software product indeed.
