Summary: I think I'll pass on it ... forever
Review: I've used TT since '96 when I purchased my first PC. The software itself has generally been OK, but nothing special.

A couple of years ago I experienced installation problems and called Intuit's "support" line. I ended up speaking to someone who sounded like a 13-year-old kid and who treated me in a very condescending manner. (Not that this kind of treatment is justified under any circumstances, but I know a fair bit about computers and programming, so it's not like this guy was forced to teach a new computer user how to use his system for the first time!)

Anyhow, the final diagnosis was that there was a "problem with my system" and that I would need to install from 3.5" diskettes. (These acutally did work, but somehow the other 50 or so programs I have on my system installed just fine from the CD-ROM drive).

Thanks to all of you who pointed out the C-Dilla issue, I'll just pass on TT and Intuit forever.

TaxCut, come to papa...

Summary: Big Mistake - Don't Buy This!
Review: Turbo Tax used to be a decent product but as many of the reviewers note, they have made it so inconvenient to use that it's just not worth the hassle. They sent me the CD in the mail, I installed and registered it before I heard about their viral copy-protect scheme. Did the online update, downloaded a state form (one state free with purchase), completed and tried to e-file my son's 1040. It was rejected for an apparently bogus error. Did the online update once more, which totally crashed Turbo Tax - it dumped every time I tried to start it.

Uninstalled and reinstalled it on the same computer, downloaded and installed a manual patch from the Intuit support site. This worked OK - except I no longer have the state forms available. I now have to call Intuit to try and get access to another 'free' copy of the state product to replace the broken one, otherwise it costs me [$$].

Maybe if you have just one computer and never have any problems with software Turbo Tax will work for you. I just can't justify wasting the time on it when other software is available that does just as well without all of the bulls**t.

Summary: No problems here!
Review: After reading the hundreds of negative reviews posted here (which all sound suspiciously alike to me, from tone to syntax to length to content), I was hesitant to purchase Turbo Tax, even though I've used it for years. My taxes have now been completed, start to finish, using Turbo Tax, and I have not had ONE of the problems listed here. It was very quick, easy to use, and I was able to exit and restart the program several times without a hitch. No changes have been made to my computer that I am aware of. (And I've looked.) Yes, you have to register the product, but you have to register lots of software. I'd use it again.

Summary: Time to Dump TurboTax
Review: After being a loyal TurboTax user for years, I am disappointed at this year's product and would not have purchased the 2002 version had I known earlier about not only the Safecast feature, but also its ever-increasing advertisements for products included only at additional cost. If they thought some of these add-on products were so invaluable, why didn't they just include them as part of the package...or ask at the very end of the interview session, "Is there any other .... we can sell you?"

Summary: Intuit Cripples Turbo Tax
Review: Consider your purchase of TT carefully! For 2003 it is crippled with C-dilla Safedisk copy protection... It must be registered by phone or internet and you can only install a full featured TT... on a single computer [at a time.] Furthermore C-dilla ... can not be easily removed from your system and remains after TT is removed. This year TT is also full of accidently tripped upgrade offers that are at least infuritating and possibly expensive....

Summary: Age is No Barrier to Turbotax DeLuxe
Review: I am an 89 year old retiree who has been submitting income tax returns since I was a young man. I submitted most returns the old fashioned way, doing the computations with a stuby pencil. On those occasions when my return was complicated by selling my home and moving expenses I used one of the nationally known tax preparers. In each of those cases, I found that they make mistakes and omissions too.

Four years ago, two years after I bought my first PC, I started using the Quicken Turbotax program. The ease of preparing each return was amazing. Paying taxes is no fun, but Turbotax made tax return preparation a pleasure; actually fun. Over these four years, Turbotax has added features that helped me to organize my data and enter it in a logical order. Then they added a feature that helped me to save money by planning actions that take advantage of newly developed tax laws. Since I conduct my bankng activities via the internet, Turbotax is able to extract data directly from my bank accounts and my other financial transactions.

When Turbotax introduced the capability of preparing my Ohio state income tax returns by using the applicable data from my Federal return, that task became immeasureably easier. It was about that time that Turbotax introduced the capability of submitting the federal and state returns electronically; and, they provided me with verification that the return had been received by the taxing authority, followed by word that it had been accepted.

I highly recommend The Quicken Turbotax electronic tax reporting system to both laymen and professionals. I can assure the users that they will have less work and worry about the accuracy and acceptance of their tax return.

Summary: Switching to TaxCut Deluxe 2002 - Say No to Turbo Tax Deluxe
Review: TaxCut Deluxe 2002 this year. . .

Because of the new added security components to Turbo Tax software, I will be switching over to Tax Cut, after several years as a faithful Intuit's customer.

The reason is that I do install it on two computers, one at home and another at work.

I would first prepare it at home and play with it for awhile both at home and spare time at work, then finally I would print it at work (where there is a laserprinter, instead of Inkjet at home).

Thus the new added security component is too much hassle and too invasive for my taste.

Hope this boycott would send a message to Intuit.

Summary: TurboTax 2002 DLuxe locks-up computer on every videoclip!
Review: MY RATING FOR THIS PRODUCT IS ZERO STARS
The TurboTax product has a bug that locks tha computer every time the user enters one of those screens where there's a video clip to be played. You have to reboot and wait until Scandisk checks your drive. You lose all your information! These videoclips are all over the program! Are they really needed to do the taxes? I don't think so. I called technical support online in 3 occasions. The first time, they told me to delete all cookies on my system. I did, didn't fix the problem. The second time, they told me to defragment the drive, which I did, it didn't fixed the TurboTax bug either. The third time, they told me that Turbo Tax needs 75-80% of the system resources to be free, that I needed to call a computer technician to free my resources! That's dumb, you need a computer with more than 512MB of RAM can't run TurboTax??!!! It's UNACCEPTABLE that intuit sells this product which is so BUGGY and then THEY DON'T HAVE QUALIFIED PEOPLE TO GIVE SUPPORT. intuit DOESN'T HAVE A TOLL-FREE NUMBER FOR SUPPORT. THEY GAVE ME A LONG-DISTANCE NUMBER, SO CUSTOMERS HAVE TO PAY FOR THIR FAULTY PRODUCT THAT IS NOT WORKING![.] THAT'S ABUSIVE.

Summary: Turbo Tax's Printing Remedy
Review: Although Intuit is requiring activation for their products being copied onto multiple computers, and as mentioned by others before me that this was to be expected eventually with piracy and all, at least they have provided a remedy in the .pdf file creation that can be copied to a floppy disk and printed from another computer or just emailed home, or what not. Why not make sure that everything is correct before creating the PDF file, you shouldn't need to create it anyway until you're really ready to submit. As far as the C-dilla directory and the process that is kicked off from the boot sector goes, nobody likes to see things like this ... probably its software that enforces their license in some way. It would be nice if someone could de-compile their binaries and take a peak to make sure nothing is going on that shouldn't though.

Summary: Not recommended this year
Review: I've used Turbo Tax for the last few years but this will be my last. The activation is annoying and I discovered I could only load it on one PC. I used to be able to work on my return at work during lunch but no longer. I found out after I bought it that the Tax Cut package does allow you to have it on more than one PC. I'm sorry I bought it.
